Intel i7-7820HK

De Intel Core i7-7820HK is een snelle quad-core-processor voor notebooks gebaseerd op de Kaby Lake-architectuur en aangekondigd in januari 2017. De CPU is op het moment van schrijven het tweede snelste model van de consumentenserie. Alleen de i7-7920HQ en Xeon E3-1535M v6 zijn sneller. Naast vier cores met Hyper Threading geklokt aan 2.9 - 3.9 GHz (4 cores tot 3.5 GHz, 2 cores tot 3.7 GHz) is de processor ook uitgerust met de HD Graphics 630 GPU en een dual-channel-geheugencontroller (DDR3L-1600/DDR4-2400). De chip is gefabriceerd in een 14nm-proces met FinFET-transistoren.

In tegenstelling tot de Core i7-7820HQ beschikt de 7820HK niet over zakelijke features als ondersteuning voor vPro of TXT.

Architectuur

Intel maakt voor Kaby Lake in feite gebruik van dezelfde micro-architectuur als Skylake, waardoor de per-MHz-prestaties onveranderd zijn gebleven. De fabrikant heeft alleen de Speed Shift-technologie herwerkt om sneller voltages en kloksnelheden dynamisch aan te passen, terwijl het verbeterde 14nm-proces veel hogere frequenties en efficiëntie toelaat dan voordien.

Prestaties

Dankzij de hogere kloksnelheden zijn de prestaties van de i7-7820HK iets beter dan die van het oude Skylake-gebaseerde topmodel, de Core i7-6920HQ (2.9 - 3.8 GHz). Performance volstaat voor erg veeleisende taken en evenaart het prestatieniveau van krachtige quad-core-processoren voor desktops.

Graphics

De geïntegreerde Intel HD Graphics 630 heeft 24 Execution Units (vergelijbaar met de oudere HD Graphics 530) geklokt aan 350 - 1100 MHz. De prestaties hangen sterk af van de geheugenconfiguratie; de GPU zou in combinatie met DDR4-2133 dual-channel-geheugen ongeveer even snel moeten zijn als een discrete Nvidia GeForce 920M.

In tegenstelling tot Skylake biedt Kaby Lake nu ook hardware-ondersteuning voor H.265/HEVC Main 10 met een 10-bit-kleurdiepte evenals Google's VP9-codec. De dual-core Kaby Lake-processors die aangekondigd werden in januari zouden ook HDCP 2.2 ondersteunen.

Energieverbruik

De chip is gefabriceerd in een verbeterd 14nm-proces met FinFET-transistoren, wat de efficiëntie nog verder heeft verbeterd. Intel heeft een TDP van 45 Watt bepaald, maar dit kan verlaagd worden tot 35 Watt door de notebookfabrikanten (cTDP down). Aangezien de Turbo Boost in dit geval minder lang aangehouden kan worden zullen de prestaties uiteraard lager liggen.
