Groter, sneller, luider. Het komt niet vaak voor dat een notebook gedurende de evolutie steeds zwaarder wordt. Echter, de nieuwe Alienware 17 R4 maakt het toegenomen gewicht meer dan goed met een algemeen betere ervaring.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (43.7 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 59 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 4287 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

We waarderen de gehele Alienware 17 serie vanwege de hoge kwaliteit, die gelukkig terug te vinden is in het nieuwste model. Een notebook is veel meer dan alleen de CPU+GPU configuratie, zoals ook de manier waarop de basisstructuur en het ontwerp de hardware ondersteunen. Met dit in gedachten is het eenvoudiger om de nieuwste Alienware te verkiezen boven een 17 inch Aorus of oudere MSI GT72.

Het model met uiterst krachtige componenten vertoont enkele gebreken. Ons specifieke model is uitgerust met de snelste CPU en GPU mogelijk in de huidige 17 R4 en de behuizing is amper in staat om deze componenten maximaal te laten presteren. Inderdaad, de CPU en GPU zullen geen prestatieproblemen kennen, maar bereiken wel temperaturen van 90 graden Celsius, ondanks de 50 dB(A) producerende ventilatoren. Dit is het punt waarop dikkere systemen met krachtigere koelsystemen zoals de MSI GT73VR of Acer Predator 17 X de Alienware notebook voorbijgaan.

De bevindingen van hierboven en het feit dat een Graphics Amplifier poort aanwezig is, maken de zwakkere varianten van de 17 R4 SKU met GTX 1050 Ti of GTX 1060 GPU's aantrekkelijker. Er is een hoge kans dat de lagere energiebehoefte van deze kaarten leiden tot stillere ventilatoren, lagere temperaturen, langere looptijden of wellicht alle drie. Gebruikers die bij toekomstige games meer kracht nodig hebben, kunnen dan simpelweg gebruik maken van de Graphics Amplifier poort. Dit is een zeer goede eigenschap van Alienware, waarmee deze notebook zich onderscheidt van de meeste concurrenten.

Afgezien van de bovengenoemde prestatieproblemen, hebben we weinig te klagen over de notebook. Een groter aanbod van functies zoals individueel verlichte toetsen, meer USB Type-A poorten of een geïntegreerde SD kaartlezer zouden de beoordeling nog hoger laten eindigen. Gamers die geïnteresseerd zijn in de Graphics Amplifier poort en sterke behuizing, zouden de minder dure variant van de 17 R4 moeten overwegen. Anderzijds zijn er stillere (en dikkere) systemen verkrijgbaar voor gebruikers die kiezen voor een GTX 1080 GPU.

De nieuwe behuizing is ontzettend goed ontwerpen en straalt exclusiviteit uit. Wees er wel van bewust dat de GTX 1080 tegen de grens van het koelsysteem aan zit.
