Geen episch verhaal. De nieuwe Samsung Odyssey had veel potentie. Echter, het is nu een matig instapmodel zonder opvallende eigenschappen om zich te onderscheiden van de massa's, met uitzondering van de luidruchtige ventilator.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (26 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (41.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 19230 Hz ≤ 99 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 19230 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 99 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 19230 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 54 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 10727 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 588200) Hz waargenomen.

De eerste Odyssey heeft gemengde gevoelens bij ons achtergelaten. Aan de ene kant presteert het systeem goed zonder CPU of GPU oververhitting en blijft het apparaat koel voor een gaming machine. Dat de notebook continu de Turbo Boost kan gebruiken is lovenswaardig, aangezien veel dunne gaming notebooks hier moeite mee hebben.

Afgezien van de betrouwbare prestaties, worstelt de Odyssey met veel aspecten. Opvallend is dat de ventilator zeer luid is, zelfs voor een gaming notebook. Een geluidsdruk van bijna 50 dB(A) kan verwacht worden van krachtige GPU's zoals de GTX 1070 of GTX 1080 - niet de GTX 1050. Handmatige controle zou de gebruiker in staat stellen een balans te vinden tussen temperatuur en prestaties.

Des te langer we het apparaat testen, des te meer bezuinigingen aan het licht komen: de SD kaartlezer is langzaam, verbindingsmogelijkheden zijn beperkt, GPU VRAM is gehalveerd, de batterijcapaciteit is klein en zowel het contrast als de kleurnauwkeurigheid valt tegen. De extra warme WASD toetsen is ook een vreemde ontwerpkeuze: een autofabrikant zou ook geen oncomfortabel warm stuur installeren.

De HP Pavilion 15t met dezelfde CPU en GPU wordt ook verkocht voor $1100 tot $1200. Hoewel de Samsung notebook beter presteert in pure rekenkracht, houden de nogal standaard componenten het apparaat achter andere GTX 1050 notebooks.

Eindelijk is de eerste Samsung Odyssey gaming notebook verkrijgbaar en... is het apparaat niets speciaals. CPU en GPU prestaties zijn uitstekend, maar de ventilator is uiterst storend.
