Intel m3-7Y30

De Intel Core m3-7Y30 is een erg efficiënt dual-core-SoC voor tablets en passief gekoelde notebooks gebaseerd op de Kaby Lake-architectuur en werd aangekondigd op het einde van Augustus 2016. De CPU bestaat uit twee processor-cores geklokt aan 1.0 - 2.6 GHz (Turbo nog niet gespecifieerd). Dankzij Hyper Threading kan de processor tot vier threads in parallel uitvoeren. De chip bevat ook de Intel HD Graphics 615 GPU, een dual-channel-geheugencontroller (DDR3L/LPDDR3) en een video-decoder en -encoder voor VP9- en H.265-video. Het SoC is nog altijd geproduceerd in een 14nm-proce met FinFET-transistoren.

Architectuur

Intel maakt voor Kaby Lake in feite gebruik van dezelfde micro-architectuur als Skylake, waardoor de per-MHz-prestaties onveranderd zijn gebleven. De fabrikant heeft alleen de Speed Shift-technologie herwerkt om sneller voltages en kloksnelheden dynamisch aan te passen, terwijl het verbeterde 14nm-proces veel hogere frequenties en efficiëntie toelaat dan voordien.

Prestaties

Aangezien Intel de Core m5- en Core m7-serie heeft geschrapt of deels opgenomen in respectievelijk de i5- en i7-serie, is de m3-7Y30 officieel de laatste Core-m-chip. Dankzij zijn hoge Turbo-kloksnelheid kan de 7Y30 zich soms meten met de 15-Watt-modellen voor korte periodes en in single-thread-scenario's, terwijl de kloksnelheden aanzienlijk teruggeschroefd worden bij aanhoudende belasting. De CPU is nog altijd geschikt voor een groot aantal meer veeleisende applicaties evenals multi-tasking. Dankzij de verbeterde efficiëntie kan de CPU vaak zelfs de Core m5- en m7-modellen van de vorige Skylake-generatie verslaan. 

Graphics

De geïntegreerde Intel HD Graphics 615 heeft 24 Execution Units (vergelijbaar met de oudere HD Graphics 515) geklokt aan 300 - 900 MHz. De prestaties hangen sterk af van de TDP-limiet en de geheugenconfiguratie; de GPU zou in combinatie met snel LPDDR3-1866 RAM in dual-channel-modus ongeveer even snel moeten zijn als de HD Graphics 520, maar kan in andere scenario's ook veel trager zijn. Moderne games van 2016 zullen helemaal niet of enkel in de laagste instellingen vlot speelbaar zijn.

In tegenstelling tot Skylake biedt Kaby Lake nu ook hardware-ondersteuning voor H.265/HEVC Main 10 met een 10-bit-kleurdiepte evenals Google's VP9-codec. 

Energieverbruik

De chip is gefabriceerd in een verbeterd 14nm-proces met FinFET-transistoren, wat de efficiëntie nog verder heeft verbeterd. Het typische TDP voor de Y-serie is afgestemd op 4.5 Watt en kan in beide richtingen aangepast worden afhankelijk van het gebruiksscenario.
