AMD A9-9420

De AMD A9-9420 is een entry-level chip uit de Stoney-Ridge APU-serie voor notebooks (7e APU-generatie), die medio 2016 werd aangekondigd. Bij de lancering is de A9-9420 de snelste Stoney Ridge processor (dual-core versie van Bristol Ridge) en neemt die plaats over van de A9-9410 (-100 MHz CPU klok). Het integreert twee CPU cores (een Excavator module met 2 integer en een FP unit) geklokt tussen 3 - 3,6 GHz. Het bevat ook een Radeon R5 GPU met 192 shaders op 800 MHz, evenals een eenkanaals DDR4-2133 geheugencontroller, H.265 video-engine en chipset met alle I/O-poorten.

Architectuur

Stoney Ridge is de opvolger van de Carrizo architectuur en het ontwerp is vrijwel identiek. Dankzij geoptimaliseerde fabricageprocessen en agressiever Boost-gedrag zijn de kloks echter iets hoger bij hetzelfde stroomverbruik. De geheugencontroller ondersteunt nu ook DDR4-RAM, in dit geval tot 2133 MHz. Stoney Ridge is de aanduiding voor de kleinere dual-core en single-core chip, terwijl Bristol Ridge de grotere quad-core chip is met dual-channel geheugencontroller. Prestaties

Dankzij de hoge maximale klok van maximaal 3,6 GHz, zouden de single-core prestaties behoorlijk goed moeten zijn. De multi-core prestaties daarentegen zijn veel lager in vergelijking met de Bristol Ridge modellen. Vergeleken met oudere Carrizo-L/Beema quad-cores, zou de APU nog steeds vrij goed moeten presteren. Het prestatieniveau zou vergelijkbaar moeten zijn met een Core-m3 en dus ook voldoende moeten zijn voor meer veeleisende toepassingen.

De TDP kan worden geconfigureerd tussen 10-25 Watt, dus er kunnen grote prestatieverschillen optreden bij langdurige werkbelastingen.

Grafische kaart

De geïntegreerde Radeon R5 (Stoney Ridge) GPU heeft 192 actieve shader units (3 rekenkernen) geklokt op maximaal 800 MHz. Meer details over de GPU zijn te vinden in de gekoppelde artikelen hierboven. 

Energieverbruik

AMD specificeert het TDP van de A9-9420 met 15 Watt, maar hij kan worden geconfigureerd tussen 10-25 Watt. Dit betekent dat de CPU een goede keuze is voor dunne en lichte notebooks, maar ook voor 15-inch apparaten met betere koelingsmogelijkheden.
