Intel Core i5-8365U
De Intel Core i5-8365U is een energiezuinige quad-core SoC voor notebooks en Ultrabooks gebaseerd op de Whiskey Lake generatie en werd aangekondigd in april 2019 als onderdeel van twee vPro capabele CPU's van de WHL-U serie. Vergeleken met de gelijknamige Kaby Lake-R-processoren (bijv. Core i5-8250U) worden de Whiskey Lake CPU's nu geproduceerd in een verder verbeterd 14nm-proces (14nm++) en bieden ze hogere kloksnelheden. De architectuur en functies zijn hetzelfde. De i5-8365U biedt bijvoorbeeld hoge Turbo-kloksnelheden van 4,1 GHz (versus 3,4 GHz van de i5-8250U) voor een enkele kern. De geïntegreerde GPU heet nog steeds Intel UHD Graphics 620 en de tweekanaals geheugencontroller ondersteunt nog steeds dezelfde RAM-snelheden als Kaby-Lake-R (DDR4-2400 / LPDDR3-2133). Thermische Snelheidsverhoging wordt niet ondersteund (alleen in de Core i7-8565U).
Vergeleken met de voorganger, de Core i5-8265U, biedt de i5-8365U een 200 MHz hogere Turbo Boost. Aangezien de i5-8365U voor het eerst in een Thinkpad verscheen, ondersteunt de CPU hoogstwaarschijnlijk vPRO voor extra hardwarebeheerfuncties.
De Whiskey Lake SoC's worden gebruikt met een nieuwe PCH geproduceerd in 14nm die USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) en CNVi WiFi/BT onderdelen ondersteunt.
Intel gebruikt in principe dezelfde microarchitectuur als Skylake en Kaby Lake, zodat de prestaties per MHz niet verschillen. Dat betekent dat Whiskey Lake een Kaby Lake chip is die is vervaardigd in het verbeterde 14nm++ proces.
De prestaties van de i5-8365U zijn afhankelijk van de koeloplossing van de laptop en de gedefinieerde TDP-limieten voor de prestaties op korte en lange termijn. We zagen al grote verschillen voor Kaby Lake-R (bijv. i7-8550U benchmarks), vooral voor de lange termijn (duurzame) prestaties. Daarom zal het interessant zijn om te zien hoe de extraTurbo-kloksnelheid kan worden gebruikt. Vergeleken met de Core i5-8265U (zie voor benchmarks) zou de 200 MHz hogere Turbo Boost moeten leiden tot enige winst in single core benchmarks.
De geïntegreerde Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Intel Gen 9.5) is ongewijzigd ten opzichte van de 8e Gen Kaby Lake chips. Met het snelle dual-channel geheugen kan het de prestaties van een speciale GeForce 920M bereiken.
In tegenstelling tot Skylake, ondersteunt Kaby Lake en Whiskey Lake nu ook H.265/HEVC Main 10 met een 10-bits kleurdiepte en Google's VP9 codec. De dual-core Kaby Lake processoren die in januari werden aangekondigd, zouden ook HDCP 2.2 moeten ondersteunen.
De chip wordt vervaardigd in een verder verbeterd 14nm proces met FinFET transistors (14nm++), hetzelfde als de 8e Gen Coffee Lake processors. Intel specificeert nog steeds de TDP met 15 Watt, wat typisch is voor ULV-chips. Afhankelijk van het gebruiksscenario kan de TDP variëren tussen 7,5 (cTDP Down) en 25 Watt.
