Intel 520UM

De Intel Core i5-520UM is een ultra low voltage dual core processor voor kleine en lichte laptops met een kloksnelheid (door Turbo Mode) tussen de 1,06 en 1,86 GHz. Elke core is gebaseerd op de Nehalem (Westmere) mico-architectuur. Hyperthreading maakt het de dual core CPU mogelijk om 4 threads gelijktijdig te verwerken (voor een beter gebruik van de pipeline). Vergeleken met de Core i7-620UM, heeft de i5 slechts 3MB Level 3 cache (i7 4MB) en een lagere maximum turbo boost kloksnelheid. Andere Core i5 CPU's (zonder de U in hun naam) zijn sneller door de hogere kloksnelheid, maar hebben meer stroom nodig.

Een functie van de nieuwe Core i5-520UM is de geïntegreerde videokaart genaamd Intel HD Graphics en de geheugen controller. Beide zitten op een afzonderlijke print die nog geproduceerd wordt op 45nm, waarbij de CPU print al op het nieuwe 32nm geproduceerd wordt.

Door de geïntegreerde geheugen controller, Hyperthreading en Turbo Boost is de Core i7-640UM sneller dan een vergelijkbaar geklokte Core 2 Duo (1,2 GHz) in alle (door ons gekende) applicaties en benchmarks. Turbo Boost wordt echter niet altijd geactiveerd (soms is het zelfs niet geactiveerd in de BIOS), daardoor is de maximumsnelheid van 1,86 GHz niet erg belangrijk.

De 32nm cpu cores uit de Westmere generatie kan ook nieuwe instructies verwerken om AES encryptie te versnellen. Vergeleken met de tragere i5 CPU's zonder AES functionaliteiten, toonde de 3DMark Vantage Communication Score een aanzienlijke verbetering met AES enabled CPU's.

De geïntegreerde Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) videokaart is geklokt tussen 166 en 500 MHz (Turbo Boost) en presteert duidelijk minder dan dan de niet-low voltage versies. De prestaties zijn nog steeds beter dan van een oude GMA 4500MHD.

Het stroomverbruik van 18 Watt TDP (maximum) telt voor het gehele pakket en is daarmee beter dan de 17 Watt TDP van de Core 2 Duo SL-reeks (enkel CPU).
