Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
De Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is een high-end SoC voor smartphones en tablets voorgesteld door Qualcomm in december 2018. De SoC integreert een snelle Prime Core die klokt tot 2.84 GHz en drie andere performante Cortex-A76-cores die tot 2.42 GHz kunnen halen. Deze worden bijgestaan door vier energiezuinige ARM Cortex-A55-cores die klokken tot max. 1.8 GHz. De hogere kloksnelheid van de Prime Core zou voor aanzienlijk hogere single-core-prestaties moeten zorgen dan de Snapdragon 845, maar we vermoeden dat de Snapdragon 855 achter de Apple A12 Bionic blijft. De nieuwe SoC zou tot 45% hogere single-core-prestaties en 35% hogere multi-core-prestaties bieden dan zijn voorganger. Qualcomm pakt uit met het feit dat de Snapdragon 855 zijn hoge prestaties ook onder langudurige belasting kan aanhouden, in tegenstelling tot de Apple A12 Bionic-SoC en de HiSilicon Kirin 980.
De Soc integreert ook de nieuwe X24 LTE-model die volgens Qualcomm tot 2 Gbit/s downloadsnelheid biedt over LTE Cat.20 en tot 316 Mbit/s uploadsnelheid. De Snapdragon 855 kan eveneens geconfigureerd worden met de nieuwe X50 5G-modem van het bedrijf.
Qualcomm heeft de geïntegreerde Wi-Fi-modem ook verbeterd. Deze ondersteunt nu Wi-Fi 6, 8x8 Sounding en 802.11 Wi-Fi. De Wi-Fi-modem kan de 60 GHz mmWave gebruiken voor internetsnelheden van max. 10 Gbit/s.
De Hexagon 690 DSP heeft de meeste revisies ondergaan van alle modules in de Snapdragon 855. De nieuwe DSP integreert een neurale processing-unit (NPU) met discrete Tensor-cores die tot 7 biljoen operaties per seconde kunnen uitvoeren in combinatie met de CPU en GPU. Kortom, de Snapdragon 855 zou drie keer sneller moeten zijn dan de Snapdragon 845 en twee keer sneller dan de Kirin 980 SoC.
De Snapdragon 855 beschikt ook over een Spectra 380 ISP: de eerste chip die een Computer Vision Engine (CV-ISP) integreert die diepteberekeningen kan maken in video's aan max. 60 fps. De Snapdragon 855 zou real-time portretmodus aankunnen of objecten detecteren voor een relatief laag energieverbruik.
De ingebouwde geheugencontroller ondersteunt tot 16 GB LPDDR4x RAM (4 x 16-bit). Daarnaast heeft de Adreno 640 50% meer compute-units (ALU's) dan de Adreno 630 en zou hij volgens Qualcomm 20% sneller moeten zijn dan zijn voorganger. We weten momenteel niet wat de werkelijke kloksnelheden van de Adreno 640 zijn, aangezien Qualcomm dit niet aankondigde tijdens de voorstelling van de Snapdragon 855.
Qualcomm zal de Snapdragon 855 fabriceren bij TSMC in een 7-nm FinFET-proces. De overstap naar 7-nm zou de SD855 20% efficiënter moeten maken dan de SD845. Qualcomm heeft het TDP van de SD855 niet officieel voorgesteld, maar we vermoeten dat de SoC maximaal 5 Watt en gemiddeld rond 3.5 Watt zal verbruiken.
