De grotere Pixel. Google biedt de Pixel 4 ook aan in een XL-versie, waarvan het formaat toelaat om een grotere batterij te integreren. Die grotere batterijcapaciteit volstaat niet alleen om het grotere scherm aan te drijven, maar verbetert ook het algemene uithoudingsvermogen van de smartphone.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 367.6 Hz ≤ 62 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 367.6 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 62 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 367.6 Hz is relatief hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen. Er zijn echter rapporten die beweren dat sommige mensen toch flickering met 500 Hz en hoger kunnen waarnemen: opgelet dus.

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 18151 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde erg snelle responstijden in onze tests en zou zeer geschikt moeten zijn voor snelle games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 1 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (24.8 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

De Google Pixel 4 XL biedt alles wat de kleinere Pixel 4 ook te bieden heeft. Daarnaast is er een langere batterijduur en een groter beeldscherm. Kopers kunnen ook dezelfde cameraprestaties verwachten en de hardware biedt eveneens identieke prestaties. Aan de andere kant blijven dezelfde klachten ook gelden, zoals de opslag van slechts 64 GB en het ontbreken van een geheugenkaartlezer. Hoewel er slechts ruimte is voor een enkele NanoSIM-kaart, kunnen gebruikers ook eSIM gebruiken.

Met de langere batterijduur en het helderdere scherm heeft de Pixel 4 XL een duidelijk voordeel ten opzichte van het kleinere model.

Sinds de introductie van de Pixel 4 heeft Google verschillende updates doorgevoerd, die naast het installeren van beveiligingspatches ook enkele kleinere bugs hebben verwijderd en prestatieverbeteringen hebben opgeleverd. De grote feature-drop van maart heeft ook een aantal nieuwe functies toegevoegd. Gebruikers moeten er echter actief in geïnteresseerd zijn. Het aanpasbare Bokeh-effect voor Selfies is een van de handigste nieuwe features. Met de regels om systeeminstellingen aan te passen aan de huidige locatie of WLAN, zullen gebruikers zelf al actiever betrokken moeten zijn. Daarnaast is er nog altijd geen belangrijke update m.b.t. tot de gezichtsherkenning, om te vermijden dat je de smartphone kan ontgrendelen met gesloten ogen. Maar volgens Google komt dit er zeker nog aan.
