Kort testrapport Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite: smartphone met een krachtige batterij

Niet helemaal lite. De Galaxy S10 zal waarschijnlijk het laatste lid van de S10-familie zijn en hoewel zijn startprijs - omwille van een aantal weggelaten features - de laagste is, is de Samsung-smartphone nog steeds een aantrekkelijk toestel dankzij zijn geüpdatete camera's, grote batterij en krachtige Snapdragon-chip.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 250 Hz ≤ 99 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 250 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 99 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 250 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 18037 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

De Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite heeft meer in huis dan je op het eerste zicht zou verwachten, want het is niet gewoon een goedkope versie van de duurdere S10-modellen. Eerst en vooral is het toestel eindelijk in staat om een overtuigende batterijduur af te leveren, iets dat het vooral te danken heeft aan een grote batterij, maar ook gedeeltelijk aan het feit dat Samsung niet langer gebruik heeft gemaakt van een Exynos-processor. Op het vlak van batterijduur presteren geen van de zustermodellen van de Lite echt goed in vergelijking.

Er moesten echter ook een paar toegevingen worden gedaan, wat voor de S10 Lite resulteerde in een lagere schermresolutie dan vlaggenschip-toestellen en het weglaten van moderne communicatiestandaarden zoals Wi-Fi 6 of 5G. Bovendien heeft de Koreaanse fabrikant de Bluetooth dual-audiofunctie en draadloos opladen achterwege gelaten.

Hoewel de Galaxy S10 Lite misschien niet het beste Galaxy S10-model is, heeft hij wel het grootste uithoudingsvermogen. Dit maakt het gemakkelijker de paar ontbrekende features door de vingers te zien.

Wat de camera betreft, heeft Samsung een aantal keuzes gemaakt die ons meteen herinneren aan het kleinere prijskaartje van de telefoon. Hoewel de cameraresolutie van de S10 Lite hoger is, voldoet de beeldkwaliteit van de camera's niet aan die van andere S10-modellen met een modulair diafragma. Daarnaast werd er ook bespaard op de camera aan de voorkant, waar hoge megapixel-getallen voorrang leken te krijgen op kwaliteit en autofocus ontbreekt. Hoewel de Super Steady OIS degelijk werkt, is de negatieve impact hiervan op de beeldkwaliteit te groot. Over het algemeen is de camerakwaliteit van de S10 Lite nog steeds goed, al wordt het niveau van de zustermodellen duidelijk niet geëvenaard.

Samsung maakt het kopers niet gemakkelijk, zeker met de huidige prijzen. Zolang de Galaxy S10 simpelweg goedkoper is, raden we de S10e af tegen de huidige prijs. De Galaxy S10 Lite is misschien al wel de betere keuze voor gebruikers die geïnteresseerd zijn in een groot scherm en vooral de zeer lange batterijduur en daarnaast minder waarde hecht aan de high-end features van de andere modellen. Voor alle anderen raden we aan om een paar maanden geduld te hebben, aangezien deze smartphone waarschijnlijk in prijs zal dalen en in de nabije toekomst waarschijnlijk voor minder dan 500 euro verkrijgbaar is.
