Kort testrapport LG G8S ThinQ Smartphone: innovatief of verouderd?

Een notch te ver. De LG G8S ThinQ arriveert laat, maar beschikt nog wel over een vlaggenschip SoC, een groot OLED-beeldscherm, een ToF camera en een 3.550 mAh batterij. De G8S ThinQ mag dan geavanceerde cameratechnologieën hebben, maar het is verder een doorsnee vlaggenschip. Lees ons testrapport waarom we toch een hoge waardering geven aan de nieuwste poging van LG om de gevestigde orde wakker te schudden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 235 Hz

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 235 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) .

De frequentie van 235 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9418 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde erg snelle responstijden in onze tests en zou zeer geschikt moeten zijn voor snelle games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 4 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (25.1 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

De LG G8 ThinQ is een interessante smartphone. Zijn air-motion gestures bieden een blik op de toekomst en voorziet in een innovatieve alternatieve manier om het toestel te gebruiken naarmate de software beter wordt. Evenzo zouden air-motion gestures het maken van foto's een stuk makkelijker moeten maken. Echter is het nu meer een leuk foefje waarmee je kunt pronken naar je vrienden en familie. Dat gezegd te hebben, een goochelaar moet zijn trucjes goed leren leren, want de  air-motion gestures zijn namelijk meestal lastig om goed werkend te krijgen.

De LG G8S ThinQ is niet een toestel met maar een hoogtepunt. Het toestel biedt uitstekende en precieze navigatie, terwijl het tegelijkertijd goed gebruik maakt van zijn Snapdragon 855 SoC. We houden ervan dat het toestel niet opwarmt bij intens gebruik. Wel vonden we dat de energie consumptie hoger was dan wat we hadden verwacht. Overigens heeft de G8S ThinQ redelijke camera's, een indrukwekkend beeldscherm en een goede batterijduur. Daarnaast zijn de stereo speakers uitstekend, ook zijn de Wi-Fi en vingerafdruksensor snel. De toevoeging van een koptelefoonaansluiting en uitbreidbare opslagruimte zijn in 2019 zeldzaam voor een vlaggenschip.

De nadelen? De camera aan de achterzijde presteert bij weinig licht ondermaats, de SoC throttled bij langdurige belasting en we hebben het hoge energieverbruik bij belasting al benoemd. Echter zijn dit ook onze enige grote nadelen van de G8S ThinQ. Je kunt de smartphone ook kopen met snellere opslagruimte en Wi-Fi, maar in de praktijk is het verschil minimaal.

De innovatieve ToF features zijn op dit moment redelijk onstabiel, maar de LG G8S ThinQ doet de basis zaken goed en is een keurige vlaggenschip smartphone.

De grote notch kan sommige kopers afweren, maar dit is een fenomeen dat tegenwoordig in veel moderne smartphones voor komt. Kort samengevat is de LG G8S ThinQ een goed alternatief voor de gevestigde orde, al helemaal door de reeds dalende prijzen.
