Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 APQ8084
De Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 (APQ8084) is een ARM-gebaseerde SoC hoofdzakelijk bedoeld voor tablets en smartphones en voorgesteld in november 2013. De 805 is de opvolger van de Snapdragon 801, wat de chip het nieuwe topmodel onder de ARM-SoC's van Qualcomm maakt. Naast de licht verbeterde quad-core CPU (2.7 GHz vs. 2.5 GHz 801), integreert de SoC een splinternieuwe GPU. De Adreno 420 biedt nieuwe features zoals DirectX 11 en overtreft zijn voorganger met maximaal 40 procent. Bovendien beschikt de chip over een 128-bit-geheugencontroller (LPDDR3-1600, 25.6 GB/s) en ondersteunt hij zowel Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac) en Bluetooth 4.1. UMTS en LTE (+) kunnen toegevoegd worden via een bijkomende radio (bv. Gobi MDM 9x35).
De CPU cores werden slechts in beperkte mate aangepast en zijn nu gebaseerd op de Krait 450-architectuur (performance per MHz tussen Cortex-A7/A9 en Cortex-A15 of Apple Cyclone). Dit betekent ook dat de cores nog altijd gebaseerd zijn op de ARMv7 ISA, een 32-bit design. Concurrenten als Apple verkopen reeds 64-bit-compatibele ARMv8-chips, bv. de Apple A8 en A8X die aangetroffen worden in de iPhone 6 en iPad Air 2. Dankzij zijn quad-core design en erg hoge kloksnelheden tot 2.7 GHz biedt de Snapdragon 805 prestaties die vergelijkbaar zijn met die van de Samsung Exynos 5433. Bijgevolg is de chip één van de snelste ARM-gebaseerde SoC's van 2014.
De nieuwe Adreno 420 grafische kaart ondersteunt niet alleen DirectX 11.1 (en daarom nieuwe features als tesselation) maar levert ook tot 40 procent hogere prestaties in vergelijking met de vorige Adreno 330. Al bij al is de Adreno 420 (gewoonlijk geklokt aan 600 MHz) iets sneller dan de Mali-T628 MP6 (Samsung Exynos 5420/5430) en PowerVR G6430 (Apple A7). Alleen Nvidia's Tegra K1 en de PowerVR GX6650 (Apple A8X) bieden nog hogere prestaties.
Aangezien de Snapdragon 805 geen cellulaire modem heeft, moet een bijkomende module geïnstalleerd worden voor gebruik in smartphones. Qualcomm biedt hiervoor de Gobi MDM9x25- of MDM9x35-serie aan; beide geven ondersteuning voor UMTS, LTE(+) Cat. 4 en carrier aggregation.
De Snapdragon 805 is één van de eerste verkrijgbare SoC's die 4K-video's met de H.265-codec kan decoderen en de inhoud kan streamen naar een compatibele TV. Een groot aantal oudere videocodecs worden ook ondersteund.
De herziene camera-ISP is nu nog krachtiger dan voordien en kan een doorvoer in de grootteorde van GPixels/s aan. Dit laat geavanceerdere post-processing toe evenals camera's met hogere resoluties.
De Snapdragon 805 wordt geproduceerd door TSMC in een 28-nanometer HPM-proces. Het stroomverbruik zou rond dat van zijn voorganger (geschat op 3 - 5W) moeten liggen. De volledige performance kan alleen gebruikt worden in grotere tablets aangezien deze over het algemeen beter in staat zijn om hogere temperaturen te weerstaan.
