Minder dan een kilogram. De LG Gram 13 maakt zijn naam waar door een van de lichtste 13.3-inch Ultrabooks van dit moment te zijn. Dit gaat echter niet zonder enkele offers, en zijn de karige set hardware features en fragiele deksel de grootste nadelen.

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 54 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 10374 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 588200) Hz waargenomen.

De Gram 13 beschikt in vergelijking met andere notebooks over een uniek set van voor- en nadelen. Onder de voordelen zijn onder meer het beeldscherm met af fabriek hogere nauwkeurigheid dan andere notebooks en de batterijlevensduur is verrassen lang. Dit laatste is met name noemenswaardig omdat zwaardere alternatieven zoals de XPS 13 of Spectre 13 beide een kortere batterijlevensduur hebben. Vergeleken met de Samsung NP900X3N bewijst LG dat de batterijlevensduur niet opgeofferd hoeft te worden voor een super lichtgewicht ontwerp.

De grote nadelen van het systeem zijn moeilijk te negeren. Het beeldschermdeksel is veel te fragiel en flexibel, zeker voor een touchscherm en de nogal beperkte variaties van SKU's maken dat de Gram 13 minder capabel lijkt dan populairdere Ultrabooks. De XPS 13, Samsung NP900X3N en Spectre 13 beschikken bijvoorbeeld over Intel Iris, 4K, GeForce MX150 grafische kaart en Thunderbolt 3 opties, wat bij de Gram 13 compleet ontbreekt. Met de LG hebben gebruikers een kariger gebruikerservaring, omdat features en prestaties opgeofferd zijn ten behoeve van draagbaarheid en gewicht.

Andere belangrijke kenmerken zoals de stevigheid van de behuizing, toetsenbord en touchpad feedback en beeldscherm helderheid zijn enkel gemiddeld of iets minder dan populaire concurrenten. De Gram 13 mag dan erg licht zijn, het is buiten niet de beste metgezel gezien er helderder en rigider Ultrabooks bestaan in deze prijsklasse.

Als leesbaarheid buiten vereist is, dan is de Samsung Notebook 9 NP900X3N een significant betere opties met een lager gewicht dan de LG. Het lage gewicht, lange batterijlevensduur en dubbele M.2 sloten zijn de grote voordelen die de Gram 13 heeft over zijn meeste concurrenten. Verder is er weinig aan het karige systeem om kopers te verleiden voor de hoge vanaf prijs van € 1200.
