De nieuwe XPS 13 - live test. Het is intussen al een aantal jaren geleden dat Dell zijn succesvolle XPS 13-serie op een grote update heeft getrakteerd. Hoewel de hardware reeds in het oudere model werd toegepast zou de dunnere behuizing alles nog beter maken. Wat ons alvast opviel: CABC kan eindelijk uitgeschakeld worden.
Update: batterijduur, stroomverbruik, PWM, foto's buitenshuis.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 1008 Hz ≤ 20 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 1008 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 20 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 1008 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 53 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 17903 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz waargenomen.

Onze eerste indruk van de nieuwe XPS 13 9370 is over het algemeen erg positief. De laptop is merkbaar dunner dan voordien, maar Dell is erin geslaagd om de koeling aanzienlijk te verbeteren. De prestaties van de quad-core ULV-CPU waren dan ook meer dan voldoende. Daarnaast is er eindelijk een optie toegevoegd in de BIOS om CABC (Content Adaptive Brightness Control) uit te schakelen. We zullen uiteraard nog meer benchmarks uitvoeren en testen wat het precieze effect is op de batterij.

We hebben ook nog geen aanzienlijke hoeveelheid 'coil whine' vastgesteld bij het nieuwe model. Onze grootste ergernis was - tot onze grote verrassing - het glanzende scherm. Hoewel we vrede hebben genomen met het feit dat touchscreens bijna altijd reflecterend zijn, is het niet-touchscreen van de XPS 13 niet meer ontspiegeld. Voor sommige gebruikers zal dit ongetwijfeld een belangrijke factor zijn bij het maken van hun aankoop.

Zoals gewoonlijk zullen we de Engelse versie van dit testrapport de komende dagen verder updaten met nieuwe bevindingen en benchmarks.
