Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 17893 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Het toestel is kleiner, lichter, krachtiger, heeft een stevigere behuizing, en blijft koeler dan het model van de vorige generatie.  Vooral de trackpad en de schermbehuizing werden verbeterd om respectievelijk comfortabeler in gebruik en steviger te zijn, en ook op het vlak van ventilatie werd er vooruitgang geboekt.

Toch zijn er ook een aantal minpunten. De Aorus X5 van vorig jaar integreert een SD-kaartlezer van het gewone formaat (niet-Mini), meer plaats voor opslagapparaten, RGB-verlichting per toets, G-Sync, een grotere batterij, een grotere trackpad en aparte Macro-toetsen. Het is wat teleurstellend om al deze features te zien ontbreken, aangezien we gewoon zijn geworden van Aorus-producten dat ze met alle toetsers en bellen komen die je van een high-end gaming-laptops kan verwachten. De Aorus 15 bevindt zich op dit vlak ergens tussen de mid-range en high-end toestellen.

Andere aspecten van de Aorus X5 werden helemaal niet verbeterd met de Aorus 15. Ventilatorgeluid, batterijduur en de Thunderbolt 3 (afwezig!) zijn stuk voor stuk minder goed bij de opvolger. De sprong in grafische prestaties tussen de GTX 1070 en RTX 2070 Max-Q bedraagt ongeveer 15 tot 25 procent, afhankelijk van de titel en resolutie.

Een groot voordeel van de Aorus 15 is zijn prijs. Onze versie met RTX 2070 kostte zo'n $2000 op Xotic PC, in vergelijking met $2100 voor de MSI GS65 of $2400 voor de Razer Blade 15 met tragere RTX 2060 of RTX 2070 Max-Q grafische kaart. De Asus ROG Scar GL504GW is met zijn prijskaartje van $1900 nog goedkoper dan de Aorus 15 en biedt dezelfde CPU en GPU, wat het toestel een erg aantrekkelijk alternatief maakt.

Het is aan binnen- én buitenkant zowat de meest evenwichtige laptop ooit van Aorus. Er zijn wel een aantal ontbrekende features, waaronder RGB-verlichting per toets, G-Sync en Thunderbolt 3, die we graag zouden terugzien in toekomstige updates, waardoor de Aorus 15 zich echt zou kunnen begeven in ultra high-end territorium.
