Vooruitgang en stap terug. De Aorus 15-W9 weet alle huidige games vloeiend weer te geven op het matte 15.6-inch beeldscherm (144 Hz, FHD, IPS). De componenten passen er ook bij: een NVMe SSD, HDD en 16 GB werkgeheugen. Maar er zijn ook minpunten: de batterijduur is zwak en er is geen Thunderbolt 3.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 17878 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Gigabyte levert met de Aorus 15-W9 een game notebook in een 15.6-inch formaat. Dit is de compactere en lichtere opvolger van de Aorus X5 v8. De Core i7-8750H processor biedt de komende jaren meer dan voldoende rekenkracht voor de meeste toepassingen. De GeForce RTX 2060 kan alle huidige games vloeiend weergeven op het Full HD beeldscherm en je kunt bijna altijd maximale detailinstellingen gebruiken.

Bij belasting wordt het notebook erg warm en maakt ook veel geluid. Naast het normale geluid van de twee ventilatoren maakt een van de twee ventilatoren ook een soort fluitend geluid.

Hoewel de Aorus 15-W9 doet wat het moet doen, het vloeiend weergeven van games, heeft het notebook zeker ook minpunten.

Een snelle NVMe SSD verzekerd een vloeiend draaiend systeem en er is ook een extra 2 TB  harde schijf, dus ook aan opslag is geen gebrek. Ook is er nog een optie om de opslag uit te breiden, doordat het notebook een tweede, vrij M.2-2280 slot heeft. Om bij de opslagapparaten te komen moet je de behuizing open maken.

Het 144 Hz IPS beeldscherm scoort goed met stabiele kijkhoeken en korte responstijden. De helderheid en contrast zijn acceptabel, maar hadden in deze prijsklasse beter moeten zijn. Het toetsenbord maakt ook een goede indruk. De batterijduur is het vermelden eigenlijk niet waard.

Eigenaren van een Aorus X5 die de overstap willen maken naar de Aorus 15-W9 (of de met een krachtiger GPU uitgeruste Aorus 15-X9) zullen mogelijk teleurgesteld zijn omdat ze enkele compromissen zullen moeten accepteren. Zo is bijvoorbeeld de volwaardige SD-kaartlezer van de X5 in de 15-W9 vervangen door een microSD-kaartlezer. Er is ook geen G-Sync en de batterijduur is ook korter dan in de X5. Daarnaast is ook de Thunderbolt 3 aansluiting van de Aorus X5 v8 vervangen door een USB 3.1 Gen-2 poort, wat een stap achteruit is. Voor vele kopers is een model van Gigabyte's Aero-15 serie de betere keuze.
