Dun, snel en zwak. Ondanks de nadelen, blijft de MSI GS65 een van de beste slanke gaming-notebooks die momenteel beschikbaar zijn. De bijgewerkte, goedkopere configuratie van vandaag ($1849) heeft een Core i7-8750H, 16 GB RAM, een GTX 1060 en een 256 GB NVMe SSD. Hoe presteert het apparaat in de realiteit?

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 11 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (25.2 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (40.3 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9515 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Om eerlijk te zijn, de huidige MSI GS65-configuratie doet weinig om de klachten te verhelpen die we in mei van de eerdere SKU hebben toegelicht. De grootste nadelen blijven de twijfelachtige bouwkwaliteit en teleurstellende robuustheid (resulterend in een onvermijdelijk geval kraakt tijdens gebruik), evenals de onnodig moeilijke onderhoudsprocedures en middelmatige invoerapparaten. De relatief goedkope configuratie van vandaag, aangedreven door een GTX 1060 en Core i7-8750H (en kleinere 256 GB NVMe SSD), slaagt er echter in om onze synthetische stresstests te overleven zonder de CPU of GPU te moeten terughouden, wat een welkome verbetering ten opzichte van het GTX 1070 Max-Q-model is dat we eerder hebben besproken. Op overeenkomstige wijze zien oppervlaktetemperaturen ook een significante daling, als resultaat van wat enigszins agressievere koeling lijkt te zijn in samenhang met een aanzienlijk minder op energie beluste GPU.

De rest van het pakket is echter overwegend positief. De GS65 is bedrieglijk licht van gewicht en relatief stil onder belasting. Het ontspiegelde 144 Hz beeldscherm biedt een goede kleurnauwkeurigheid en verzadiging naast uitstekende kijkhoeken (zelfs als helderheid en contrast beter zouden kunnen zijn). Afgezien van de positionering van de poorten en het ontbreken van een kaartlezer, is connectiviteit meestal vergelijkbaar met de Aero 15X. En tot slot, de machine presteert dankzij de configuratie goed - ook al is de GTX 1060 niet krachtig genoeg om optimaal te profiteren van de pracht van een 144 Hz verversingsfrequentie in moderne games (nog steeds, alles boven de 60 fps is mooi meegenomen).

Vanuit een zuiver statistisch oogpunt blijft de MSI GS65, ondanks zijn opmerkelijke zwakke punten, een van de beste dunne en lichte gaming-notebooks die momenteel beschikbaar zijn.

Voor $1849 is het apparaat zeker niet goedkoop, maar de prijs is in overeenstemming met die van zijn concurrenten, en misschien zelfs een beetje lager. Voordat je een aankoop doet, is het ook de moeite waard om beter robuustere concurrenten te overwegen, zoals de Gigabyte Aero 15X v8 en Razer Blade 15, maar houd er rekening mee dat je er iets meer voor betaalt.
