Kort testrapport Dell Precision 5530 (Xeon E-2176M, Quadro P2000) Workstation

Refinement. De Precision 5530 is, op veel vlakken, wat de Precision 5520 had moeten zijn. Hoewel de geüpdatete machine nog altijd te lijden heeft onder throttling, zijn de stabiliteit en prestaties van de CPU er een stuk op vooruit gegaan. De GPU werd ook verbeterd, zonder grote negatieve invloed op de warmteontwikkeling. De totale gebruikservaring is dus veel positiever.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 1000 Hz

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 1000 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) .

De frequentie van 1000 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 13573 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Dat lijkt er al meer op. Dell tracht al drie jaar lang om de perfecte, dunne en lichte workstation te maken - en de Precision 5530 is hun beste poging tot nu toe. Dit is de machine waarvan we hoopten dat de Precision 5520 het was. Het is verfrissend om zoveel finesse in een dergelijk compact toestel te zien.

De Precision 5530 is echter niet zonder fouten. Thermische throttling is nog altijd een probleem, al is het veel minder ernstig dan wat we bij de 5520 (of bij andere dunne en lichte workstations) konden waarnemer. Veeleisende, synthetische werklasten brengen het toestel al snel tot zijn limieten, al laat hij toch zien dat hij heel wat in zijn mars heeft. Niettemin kunnen we de beperkte CPU-prestaties en hoge temperaturen onder belasting zeker als nadeel noteren voor de Precision 5530, aangezien workstations normaal ontworpen zijn om voor lange periodes intensief belast te worden.

We dienen op te merken dat de Precision 5530 een heel specifieke niche vervult. Door zijn compacte vorm mist de laptop een aantal features die wel beschikbaar zijn in dikkere workstations zoals de ThinkPad P-serie of HP's ZBook-serie. Onderhoudsmogelijkheden zijn beperkt - evenals de selectie aan poorten - en het gebrek aan opties voor ECC-RAM kan voor sommigen een dealbreaker zijn. Wie op zoek is naar de volwaardige workstation-ervaring kan eens kijken bij de Dell Precision 7000-serie of de hierboven genoemde ThinkPad en ZBook.

De rest van het toestel is zo goed dat we de CPU-throttling bijna zouden vergeten. Het scherm is prachtig en behoort tot de beste die we gezien hebben - naast de MacBook Pro-serie van Apple. Het scherm is helder, scherp en levendig; kleuren komen goed tot hun recht en alles ziet er gewoon goed uit. De behuizing blijft ook een sterk punt. Bouwkwaliteit is uitstekend en het design is opmerkelijk (vooral de "Brushed Onyx" kleur van ons toestel). Er zijn maar weinig toestellen die zich op het vlak van design kunnen meten met de Precision 5530 - en nog minder die zo aantrekkelijk zijn.

De Precision 5530 is ongetwijfeld een van de beste ultraportable workstations. Sommige fabrikanten focussen op rekenkracht en besteden minder aandacht aan design en draagbaarheid. Andere maken de behuizing zo dun mogelijk en hebben geen oog voor componenten van professionele kwaliteit. De Precision 5530 vertegenwoordigt het meest geslaagde evenwicht tussen deze twee ideeën dat we al hebben gezien - en als Dell de thermische problemen kan oplossen, zou de Precision 5540 van volgend jaar wel eens de perfecte ultraportable workstation kunnen worden. Met een prijs van meer dan 3500 euro is de Precision echter niet voor iedereen, maar dat hoeft ook niet. Goed gedaan, Dell.
