Premium Business-Multimedia Combination. De XPS 15 van Dell krijgt veel aandacht die andere fabrikanten ook zouden willen krijgen. Natuurlijk wil HP ook graag concurreren met Dell's premium laptop. Daarom heeft HP een apparaat geïntroduceerd dat indruk wil maken met een unibody-behuizing, zakelijke functies en krachtige componenten. Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9524 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Compleet nieuwe laptopmodellen zonder een voorganger, zoals de HP EliteBook 1050 G1, zijn altijd interessant. Had HP succes met zijn eerste echte multimediamodel van de EliteBook-serie en is het een waardige uitdager voor de Dell XPS 15?

HP is zeker geslaagd met de behuizing en het ontwerp van de EliteBook 1050: extreem hoge kwaliteit, zeer stevig en visueel aantrekkelijk - geschikt voor de prijsklasse. Er is ook niets te klagen over de invoerapparaten. HP maakt gebruik van een glazen touchpad die comfortabel kan worden bediend en een goed toetsenbord (zelfs als het niet perfect is). Wat het beeldscherm betreft, biedt HP een mat 4K UHD-lcd-scherm, een optie die geen van de concurrenten kan bieden. Dit display heeft ook goede helderheidswaarden van bijna 400 cd/m². De verbindingsmogelijkheden is solide en aanzienlijk uitgebreider dan bijvoorbeeld in de Apple MacBook Pro 15. Hoewel de webcam niet beter is in vergelijking met de Dell XPS 15, is deze ten minste correct boven de monitor geplaatst. Het biedt ook meer functies met zijn privacy-opening en infraroodsensoren. Dankzij een tweede M.2-2280-slot is de EliteBook 1050 G1 ook beter uit te breiden dan de Dell XPS 15. Bovendien blijft de EliteBook aanzienlijk koeler en heeft het voor een laptop goede luidsprekers.

Is dit echter voldoende om het hoofd te bieden aan de concurrenten? Waarschijnlijk niet, omdat niet alleen de EliteBook 1050 G1 aanzienlijk duurder is, maar hij ook enkele zwakke punten heeft. Deze omvatten bijvoorbeeld de feiten dat hoewel de behuizing behoorlijk stevig is, deze ook relatief zwaar is en er grote randen boven en onder het scherm zijn. Niet alleen is de EliteBook 1050 G1 het zwaarste model in zijn klasse, hij is ook lang niet zo compact als de Dell XPS 15. Bovendien zijn de algemene prestaties lager dan die van de Dell: hoewel de Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Max-Q in combinatie met Intel's hexacore-processor het in principe geschikt maakt voor gamen, is de Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q in de Dell XPS 15 merkbaar sneller. Bovendien is de EliteBook aanzienlijk gesmoord in de stresstest - het nadeel van het laag houden van de temperaturen. We houden ook niet van het geluidsniveau van de EliteBook. De ventilator draait te vaak en op een frequentie die te hoog is, en hij is relatief luid; de ventilator zoemt ook en blaast hete lucht op de handen van muisgebruikers, vanwege de suboptimale plaatsing van de ventilatieopeningen.

We hebben ook enkele klachten over het beeldscherm, zoals de vrij ongelijke helderheidsverdeling. Maar wat nog ernstiger is, is dat HP het aanzienlijk helderdere en levendiger DreamColor 4K-UHD-scherm van de EliteBook 1050 G1 niet gebruikt, hoewel dit model wordt aangeboden in de identiek uitgeruste HP ZBook Studio G5. Deze beslissing is onbegrijpelijk voor zo'n dure notebook. Over het algemeen zouden we ook meer zakelijke functies gewenst hebben, zoals een PointStick, een smartcardlezer of Ethernet. Dit is een gemiste kans om van de EliteBook 1050 G1 een echte zakelijke allrounder te maken.

Zeer goed is soms niet goed genoeg: de HP EliteBook 1050 G1 is een hoogwaardige zakelijke multimedia-notebook die echter inferieur is aan de Dell XPS 15 in het algemeen.

Uiteindelijk behaalt de HP EliteBook 1050 G1 een zeer goed resultaat van 89% in onze evaluatie. Hoewel dit op het eerste gezicht misschien verrassend is gezien onze klachten, zijn onze kritiekpunten natuurlijk op een hoog niveau. De prijs is immers hoog en de concurrenten zijn erg sterk. De Apple MacBook Pro 15 2018 behaalt een score van 90% en de Dell XPS 15 9570 bereikt zelfs 92% - en dat als een meer betaalbare variant. Hoewel de HP EliteBook 1050 G1 onze aanbeveling ontvangt, zijn er niet veel duidelijke redenen om deze te verkiezen boven de concurrenten. Met name de Dell XPS 15 biedt gewoon een betere prijs-prestatieverhouding. Dus hoewel Dell de EliteBook niet hoeft te vrezen, kan het toch interessant worden in deze categorie, aangezien de Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme binnenkort op de markt zal komen. Of dat apparaat meer een gevaar voor de XPS 15 gaat worden, zal blijken uit ons testrapport die waarschijnlijk binnenkort wordt uitgebracht.
