Door de hitte bezweken. De Precision 3530 is het nieuwste instapniveau werkstation van Dell. De Precision 3530 is een capabele machine aangedreven door een nVidia Quadro P600 en nieuwe Xeon CPU van Intel. De warmte- en geluidsontwikkeling laten echter nog veel te wensen over.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 90 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (25.5 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Het scherm vertoonde trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.9 (minimum) tot 636 (maximum) ms. » 47 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (40.7 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 1053 Hz ≤ 98 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 1053 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 98 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 1053 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9705 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Het verhaal van de Dell Precision 3530 is er een van compromissen. Dell heeft de behuizing van de oudere 3520 hergebruikt, maar dan in combinatie met krachtiger hardware. Deze keuze geeft de 3530 vergelijkbare problemen als de 3520, zoals de warmte- en geluidsontwikkeling. Net als de 3520 wordt de 3530 op bepaalde plekken oncomfortabel warm. De ventilator slaat ook snel aan en wordt erg luid. Nog erger is dat het slechte beheer qua warmteontwikkeling zorgt voor behoorlijk zware throttling, waardoor de CPU prestaties bij zware belasting tot 20% dalen.

Deze compromissen maken dit verder prettige notebook kreupel. De 3530 is goedgebouwd, heeft een uitstekend toetsenbord en heeft een fantastische selectie aansluitingen (waaronder een Thunderbolt 3 poort). Het beeldscherm is gemiddeld en zou voldoende moeten zijn voor gebruik waar kleurechtheid minder van belang is. De batterijduur is uitstekend.

Door de inconsistente prestaties scoort de Precision 3530 ondanks de pluspunten niet erg hoog. De Xeon CPU en Quadro GPU vragen simpelweg teveel van het matige koelsysteem. Het resultaat is zwaar throttlen, met name qua CPU, en een luide en agressief aanslaande ventilator. Er zijn veel betere opties die vergelijkbare (of zelfs betere) prestaties leveren die een stuk consistenter zijn. HP's Zbook 15 G4 of de Lenovo ThinkPad P52 zijn beide betere keuzes.
