Recensie van de Dell 16S DS16260: Een betere Dell 16 Plus

Uitstekende prijs-kwaliteitverhouding, afhankelijk van de configuratie.

De 16S is een enorme verbetering ten opzichte van de Dell 16 Plus van vorig jaar. Bij hogere configuratieniveaus kunnen de prijzen echter tot belachelijke hoogten oplopen, waardoor de XPS 16 de betere aankoop is.

Oordeel — Sterk mainstreamproduct voor de juiste prijs

De Dell 16S introduceert een robuuster en volwassener chassisontwerp ten opzichte van de Dell 16 Plus van vorig jaar, zonder dat dit ten koste gaat van de aansluitingen of de onderhoudsvriendelijkheid. Ook de CPU- en beeldschermopties zijn verbeterd, met onder meer een 120 Hz OLED-scherm en, misschien wel het meest opvallend, de Core Ultra X7 voor hetzelfde niveau aan grafische prestaties als de nieuwste XPS 16. Alleen al het vernieuwde ontwerp maakt het nieuwe model het overwegen waard ten opzichte van het model van vorig jaar.

Hoewel de vanafprijzen voor de Dell 16S redelijk zijn, is het de moeite waard om op te merken dat deze gemakkelijk kunnen oplopen tot meer dan 2000 USD, waardoor het model bij bepaalde configuratieniveaus moeilijker aan te bevelen is. De configuratie met de Core Ultra 7 355 begint bijvoorbeeld bij 1310 dollar, terwijl het simpelweg upgraden van de CPU naar de Core Ultra X7 358H de prijs aanzienlijk zou verhogen tot 2120 dollar. Het configureren van de XPS 16 met dezelfde CPU is met $2350 slechts iets duurder, zelfs met dezelfde hoeveelheid RAM en opslagruimte en een vergelijkbaar IPS-scherm. Gebruikers die de snellere Core Ultra X7 wensen, kunnen dus net zo goed iets meer uitgeven voor de superieure XPS 16-ervaring, terwijl de Dell 16S veel gemakkelijker te verkopen is bij de middelste Core Ultra 7-configuratieniveaus.

Prijs en beschikbaarheid

Dell levert de 16S nu vanaf 1310 dollar voor de Core Ultra 7 FHD-configuratie.

Net zoals de 14-inch Dell 14S de opvolger is van de oudere Dell 14 Plus, is de gangbare 16-inch Dell 16S de opvolger van de Dell 16 Plus van vorig jaar. Het nieuwe model biedt diverse vernieuwingen, met name wat betreft het ontwerp van de behuizing, terwijl de processoropties zijn uitgebreid van Intel Lunar Lake naar zowel Panther Lake als AMD Zen 5.

Ons testexemplaar is een middenklasse-configuratie met de Intel Core Ultra 7 355-processor en een 1800p OLED-touchscreen voor ongeveer 1700 USD. Andere SKU’s kunnen worden geleverd met de krachtigere Core Ultra X7 358H of in plaats daarvan met IPS-schermen met een lagere resolutie.

Concurrenten zijn onder meer andere 16-inch multimedia-laptops uit het middensegment, zoals de Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5, de HP OmniBook 5-serie of de Asus VivoBook S16-serie.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

De achtergrondverlichting van het scherm flikkert op 957.41 Hz (in het slechtste geval, bijvoorbeeld bij gebruik van PWM) aan een helderheid van 100 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 957.41 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 7710 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz waargenomen.
