Niet zo flexibel. Lenovo's Flex 5 is een betaalbare 2-in-1 die er voor zijn prijs prima uitziet en over meer dan genoeg geïntegreerde poorten beschikt. Helaas laten het donkere scherm en de zwakke prestaties van de Turbo Boost heel wat te wensen over.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde relatief trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 70 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (25.8 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (41.3 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 21190 Hz ≤ 99 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 21190 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 99 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 21190 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 53 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 8813 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

De Flex 5 is niet bedoeld voor tech-fanaten of professionele gebruikers - en Lenovo is zich hiervan bewust. In plaats daarvan richt het goedkope toestel zich op multimediagebruikers thuis of studenten die eenvoudigweg op zoek zijn naar een goedkope 15-inch Windows-laptop met features van een tablet en die geschikt is voor het afspelen van films, tekstverwerking en af en toe een game. De laptop biedt geen aanzienlijke voordelen ten opzichte van de Pavilion 2-in-1, Vivobook 2-in-1 of de zwaardere Inspiron 15 2-in-1, behalve de optie voor de trage GeForce MX130-GPU. Als een convertible voor thuisgebruik volstaat de Flex 5 maar nipt.

Er is helaas een lange lijst met minpunten. Het erg donkere scherm betekent dat deze convertible alleen geschikt is voor gebruik binnenshuis en de extreem beperkte Turbo Boost zorgt ervoor dat er weinig redenen zijn om voor de versie met Core i7-8550U te kiezen, wanneer de goedkopere variant met i5-8250U bijna even snel is. Het single-channel-RAM haalt de prestaties nog verder naar beneden, terwijl de koeling beschamend klein is voor de ruime 15-inch-behuizing. Er is meer dan genoeg lege ruimte rond de ventilator die Lenovo gebruikt zou kunnen hebben voor een meer performante en minder luidruchtige koeling.

De startprijs van ongeveer 700 euro is eerlijk voor een redelijk teleurstellend en weinig memorabel toestel, terwijl de meer high-end variant voor meer dan 1000 euro verkrijgbaar is. We raden aan om de duurste optie te vermijden, aangezien je beter af bent met een degelijke, traditionele laptop zoals de XPS 15 of de iets duurdere Spectre x360 15. De extreem zwakke Turbo Boost en het donkere scherm gooien helaas roet in het eten voor de Flex 5.
