Lenovo ThinkPad P1 G4 laptop review: Succes met Vapor-Chamber & GeForce RTX 3070

Superdamp. We hebben het basismodel van de ThinkPad P1 G4 al getest, en nu volgt de tweede test: De workstation uitloper van de Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme G4 behaalt veel betere CPU prestaties met een uitgeboord koelsysteem. Tegelijkertijd testen we het 16 inch WQUXGA LCD in 16:10 formaat.

Toen Lenovo de ThinkPad P1 in 2018, was de rolverdeling in de workstation line-up duidelijk: Het nieuwe premium model moest kopers oppikken die een bijzonder dun en licht mobiel workstation nodig hadden en daar wat prestaties voor konden opofferen. Het klassieke werkstationmodel Lenovo ThinkPad P52 bood daarentegen meer prestaties met minder mobiliteit.

De nieuwe Lenovo ThinkPad P1 G4 heeft nog steeds zijn mobiliteitsvoordeel ten opzichte van de ThinkPad P15 G2, het huidige volvette ThinkPad-werkstation. Klanten hoeven echter niet per se meer in te leveren op prestaties - althans op papier. Lenovo heeft de ThinkPad P1 aanzienlijk geüpgraded en ons testmodel uitgerust met een Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 en een 4K UHD+ resolutie die overeenkomt met een van de sterkste configuratievarianten. De Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 is verkrijgbaar met drie verschillende 16-inch beeldschermen in 16:10-formaat. De basisoptie, een WQXGA LCD (2.560 x 1.600),hebben we al getest. Onze review unit bevat het matte 4K UHD+/WQUXGA scherm zonder touch - de derde optie is hetzelfde scherm, in glossy, met touch en Wacom digitizer.

De door Lenovo opgegeven helderheidswaarde van 600 cd/m² wordt overtroffen door het LG paneel met een gemiddelde van 610 cd/m². In het testveld van premium laptops in het 15- tot 16-inch formaat is het scherm van Lenovo's ThinkPad P1 G4 duidelijk het helderst.

De responstijden zijn niet bijzonder goed - de WQXGA-optie is in dit opzicht beter. Het verschil is vooral opvallend in vergelijking met het OLED beeldscherm van de HP ZBook Studio 15 G8; de OLED variant van de ThinkPad P1 G3 is helaas niet meer beschikbaar in de ThinkPad P1 2021.

Lenovo adverteert het hier geïnstalleerde WQUXGA scherm met een fabriekskalibratie. In feite meten we af-fabriek vrij goede waarden met Calman en de X-Rite i1Pro 2. Een DeltaE-waarde van 2,2 voor de kleurwaarden betekent dat de afwijkingen gering zijn. Er was echter nog ruimte voor verbetering. Na kalibratie met de X-Rite i1Profiler daalde de DeltaE tot 1,0. Zoals altijd kunt u het bijbehorende kleurprofiel gratis downloaden.

De zwartwaarde van 0,41 cd/m² is niet bijzonder uitstekend voor een IPS LED scherm, maar de hoge helderheid zorgt nog steeds voor een goed contrast van 1537:1. Samen met de hoge kleurruimte dekking van 98,9% van de brede AdobeRGB kleurruimte (Lenovo adverteert 100% AdobeRGB), is de beeldkwaliteit van de Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 uitstekend, en het 8-bit paneel is goed geschikt voor beeldbewerking

De Lenovo ThinkPad P1 2021 is met gemak geschikt voor gebruik buitenshuis. Het matte oppervlak helpt het heldere 4K UHD+ beeldscherm om op bewolkte dagen het daglicht gemakkelijk te overtreffen. Direct zonlicht kan echter nog steeds een uitdaging zijn, zelfs bij 600 cd/m²

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (23.8 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Het scherm vertoonde trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 636 (maximum) ms. » 90 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (37.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 21103 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz waargenomen.

De kwaliteit van de IPS-technologie komt tot uiting in de uitstekende stabiliteit van de kijkhoek, die ook bij de ThinkPad P1 2021 van Lenovo foutloos is.

Prestaties werkstation Lenovo aanzienlijk beter met VaporChamber

Lenovo vertrouwt op de nieuwste en krachtigste componenten die Intel en Nvidia momenteel aanbieden. In het geval van Intel betekent dit processoren uit de Tiger-Lake H-serie. De drie Core CPU's (i7-11800H, i7-11850H, i9-11950H) hebben acht cores, de eveneens aangeboden Xeon W-11855M is een zes-core.

De keuze aan beschikbare grafische chips is veel groter. Als absolute basisoptie is de P1 G4 beschikbaar zonder een eigen GPU, d.w.z. alleen met de geïntegreerde Intel grafische voorzieningen. Er zijn zeven specifieke grafische chips;Nvidia T1200, RTX A2000, RTX A3000, RTX A4000, RTX 5000 en voor de eerste keer in de P1 GeForce RTX 3070 en RTX 3080.

De Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 heeft in ieder geval twee SO-DIMM-sleuven voor maximaal 64 GB geheugen. Dit kan ook ECC RAM zijn wanneer de ThinkPad laptop is geconfigureerd met Xeon. Afhankelijk van de modelvariant heeft de Lenovo laptop één of twee M.2 2280 poorten - modelvarianten met Intel GPU, T1200 of RTX A2000 hebben er twee, alle anderen slechts één massa-opslagsleuf

Processor

De Intel Core i7-11850H is een huidige processor uit de "Tiger-Lake" serie met acht kernen en 16 threads. Nominaal is het TDP van deze CPU 45 watt; dit verbruik is echter niet voldoende om de maximale kloksnelheden van 4,8 GHz op alle kernen te halen. Met onze CPU lijst kan de Intel processor worden vergeleken met andere CPU's.

Eigenlijk is de i7-11850H praktisch even snel als de i7-11800H, het verschil is vooral te danken aan de vPro ondersteuning van de 11850H - maar in de ThinkPad P1 G4 is het verschil tussen de twee groot. De reden is niet de processor, maar het koelsysteem: Het hier geteste model met GeForce RTX 3070 bevat vapor-chamber koeling. Daarom kan de processor hier permanent ongeveer 60 watt verbruiken onder pure CPU belasting, terwijl de CPU van de minder uitgeruste ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 met Nvidia T1200 beperkt was tot ongeveer 40 watt. In de Cinebench R23 multi-core test is de Vapor-Chamber P1 27% sneller dan het goedkopere model, hij staat ongeveer gelijk met de HP ZBook Studio 15 G8.

Prestaties van het systeem

De Lenovo ThinkPad P1 G4 is zeer snel in het dagelijks gebruik. In PCMark10 staat hij overall op de eerste plaats in het vergelijkingsveld, wat ook spreekt voor de zeer goede systeemprestaties.

Zo goed als de prestaties zijn: We moesten de ThinkPad laptop erg vaak opnieuw opstarten. De reden waren grafische fouten die soms optraden na stand-by; het hele beeld werd dan bedekt met zwarte en witte strepen. Aangezien deze fout zich niet voordeed bij het eerste testmodel, nemen wij aan dat het een enkelvoudig probleem is van dit testapparaat

De Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 is een van de krachtigste mobiele GPU's van Nvidia's huidige "Ampere" generatie. In het geval van Lenovo's ThinkPad P1 G4 zijn de 5120 shader units echter ver verwijderd van hun maximale prestaties, omdat Lenovo de GPU instelt op een TGP van 80 Watt - in het verleden zou deze variant "Max-Q" hebben geheten.

Het is dus geen wonder dat de RTX 3070 gemiddeld over alle laptops zo'n 10% sneller is dan hier in de Lenovo ThinkPad P1 2021. Toch is de kloof met de ThinkPad X1 Extreme G3 met GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q enorm (+148%), zelfs in vergelijking met de Nvidia T1200 variant van de P1 is de GeForce RTX 3070 meer dan twee keer zo snel in de 3DMark benchmarks (+118%). In dit geval is de GeForce zeker de moeite waard. De conclusie voor de professionele benchmark suite SPECviewperf is meer gemengd: Hier behaalt de GeForce-P1 deels goede, maar ook deels slechte resultaten. Voor CAD zou een ThinkPad P1 met een ISV-gecertificeerde Nvidia GPU moeten worden gekozen.

De GPU prestaties zijn duidelijk beperkt in batterij mode. Het 3DMark 11 resultaat is ongeveer 56% lager zonder een voeding (13.508 punten in de 3DMark 11 GPU score)
