Quo Vadis. De Chinese Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 wordt nu - door nieuwe marketing strategieën van Xiaomi - simpelweg Redmi Note 7 genoemd. De smartphone is moeilijk te categoriseren, omdat het de hoogste cameraresolutie heeft van alle smartphones op de markt, en tegelijkertijd uitgerust is met een relatief zwakke Snapdragon 660. We testen de eerste officiële smartphone van het sub-merk Redmi en laten deze onze volledige testsuite doorlopen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 2336 Hz ≤ 18 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 2336 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 18 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 2336 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9679 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde relatief trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 51 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (25.4 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Hoe doet de Xiaomi smartphone, met zijn hoge resolutie camera en verder middenklasse hardware, het tegen de concurrentie?

De Note 7 heeft een duidelijke voorsprong op de P20 Lite. De Note 7 heeft niet alleen meer prestaties, maar presteert ook op andere gebieden zoals Wi-Fi en batterijduur beter.

De Qualcomm uitgeruste concurrentie is behoorlijk evenwichtig. Voor € 200 tot € 250, afhankelijk van de opslag, zijn de prijzen vergelijkbaar met de Note 7. Daardoor komt de keuze neer op de details zoals het uiterlijk of de extra's, al komt geen van de andere drie kandidaten in de buurt van de camera resolutie van de Note 7.

Ten tijde van testen, wordt de 64 GB versie van de Xiaomi Mi 8 nog steeds verkocht voor ongeveer € 350, en is de grotere 128 GB versie slechts € 10 tot € 15 duurder. Naast de hogere prijs, moeten bij de hogere prestaties van de Mi 8 het lagere uithoudingsvermogen in het achterhoofd gehouden worden, waardoor we nog niet overduidelijk een aanbeveling kunnen doen.

De Redmi Note 7 is een goede middenklasse smartphone; de 48 MP camera is de blikvanger.

Op zichzelf kunnen we de praktische MIUI van Xiaomi waarderen. Deze biedt veel meer dan we in ons testrapport konden bespreken. Dat gezegd hebbende, het Chinese model heeft erg veel onnodige software en sommige van de AI features kunnen kennelijk niet in Europa gebruikt worden.

Bijna aan het eind van onze tests ontvingen we informatie dat er drie versies van de Redmi Note 7 gemaakt worden:

  • Redmi Note 7 China: 48 MP camera, max. 6 GB RAM, geen band 20 LTE
  • Redmi Note 7 Global India: 12 MP camera, max 4 GB RAM, band 20 LTE
  • Redmi Note 7 Global Europe: 48 MP camera, max. 4 GB RAM, band 20 LTE

Dit zou de Chinese versie van deze strakke smartphone nog aantrekkelijker moeten maken in Europa.
