Kort testrapport Razer Blade 15 GTX 1660 Ti Base Model Laptop: Geen RTX? Geen probleem!

Sneller dan eender welke Blade 15-laptop met GTX. De GTX 1660 Ti is, wat rauwe GPU-rekenkracht betreft, maar iets trager dan de RTX 2060 en is verkrijgbaar voor honderden euro's minder, terwijl hij sneller is dan de snelste Blade 15-configuraties met Pascal. Een aantal verborgen nadelen zijn het minder accurate scherm en de tragere CPU-prestaties, al doen deze maar weinig afbreuk aan de totaalervaring.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 12 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (24.1 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (38.2 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 200 Hz ≤ 99 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 200 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 99 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 200 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9726 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 151500) Hz waargenomen.

In de wereld van laptops is de GeForce RTX 2060 slechts ongeveer 5 tot 10 procent sneller dan de GTX 1660 Ti als RTX-specifieke features zoals RT of DLSS uitgeschakeld zijn. Als je geen interesse hebt in deze features kan je 400 euro besparen, zonder je gaming-ervaring sterk te beïnvloeden, door te kiezen voor de Blade 15 GTX 1660 Ti. Dit alleen maakt de nieuwe configuratie interessant voor meer prijsbewuste gamers.

Hoewel de Blade 15 GTX 1660 Ti de goedkoopste Blade 15 met Turing is, is hij in feite zo'n 10 tot 15 procent sneller in games dan de krachtigste Blade 15 GTX 1070 Max-Q van de vorige generatie. Gebruikers krijgen dus nog altijd een gaming-ervaring die superieur is aan het beste wat de Blade 15 Pascal-serie had te bieden in dit opzicht.

De Blade 15 GTX 1660 Ti heeft een aantal verbogen nadelen. Eerst en vooral wordt er gebruik gemaakt van PWM in bijna alle helderheidsniveaus en aan een voldoende lage frequentie dat sommige gebruikers met gevoelige ogen last kunnen ondervinden van een flikkerend effect op het scherm. Daarnaast is het scherm minder goed gekalibreerd dan die in de Blade 15 RTX-serie. Kleurtemperatuur is bijvoorbeeld koeler dan het moeten zijn. Een derde nadeel is de geluids- en temperatuurontwikkeling, aangezien de Blade 15 GTX 1660 Ti niet beschikt over geavanceerde "vapor chamber" koeling. Ten slotte lijken games wat vlotter te lopen in Creator-modus dan in Gaming-modus, aangezien de CPU beter presteert in Creator-modus. Je kan dus maar beter Gaming-modus volledig overslaan en bij Creator-modus blijven voor maximale prestaties.

Het grootste nadeel is het feit dat de CPU-prestaties onderdoen voor die van de Blade 15 RTX 2070 Max-Q of 2080 Max-Q, ook al maken ze allemaal gebruik van dezelfde Core i7-9750H-processor. Het tekort van bijna 15 procent zal echter geen grote invloed hebben op de gaming-prestaties, zeker aangezien het doelwit slechts 60 FPS bedraagt, maar het is wel een jammere zaak voor enthousiastelingen die elke druppel performance uit hun Core i7-9750H willen persen.

Naast de opmerkingen hierboven, blijven de meeste van onze commentaren over de Blade 15-serie van toepassing op de configuratie met GTX 1660 Ti. Oppervlaktetemperaturen, helderheid, kleuren en zelfs energieverbruik zijn erg gelijkaardig voor alle Blade 15 Turing-varianten, ondanks de verschillen in prestaties.
