De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 54 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 10727 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 588200) Hz waargenomen.

Chinese fabrikanten zoals Leagoo, Xiaomi, Bluboo, Oppo en Vivo brengen voornamelijk smatphones op de markt in de prijscategorie van 200-250 euro. Wat de Honor 7X zo speciaal maakt ten opzichte van de legio concurrenten is dat Huawei daadwerkelijk een wereldwijde ambitie heeft. In tegenstelling tot veel apparaten van de hierboven genoemde fabrikanten ondersteunt de Honor 7X wel degelijk 4G LTE, is het apparaat eenvoudig te verkrijgen en wordt het model ontwikkeld door een financieel sterke fabrikant. Dit niveau van zekerheid en service is meestal niet vanzelfsprekend voor gebruikers buiten Azië. Huawei biedt gewoonweg meer zekerheid voor het geld.

De Honor 7X heeft ijzersterke punten. Voor een zeer lage prijs krijgen consumenten een 5,93 inch FHD beeldscherm met dezelfde 18:9 beeldverhouding waar topmodellen vijf keer zo veel voor vragen. De vingerafdrukscanner, dubbele 4G SIM slots, uit te breiden geheugen en 3,5 mm audiopoort worden soms niet eens bij duurdere modellen ingebouwd. De dunne behuizing is een andere verrassing, aangezien het model lijkt op de veel duurdere Mate 10 Pro wat betreft afmetingen en positionering van poorten. Het eindresultaat is een smartphone die de indruk wekt van een hogere prijsklasse.

Vanzelfsprekend is er bezuinigd op enkele aspecten, hoewel Huawei gelukkig heeft gesneden in het budget voor extra functies en niet in dat van hardware kwaliteit. Gebruikers moeten het doen zonder NFC, IR, 802.11ac, Wi-Fi bellen, draadloos laden en USB Type-C. Ook specifieke onderdelen van EMUI zoals Hotspot en Navigation Dock zijn uitgeschakeld. Al met al zijn de compromissen begrijpelijk en zullen prijsbewuste consumenten  niet afgehouden worden.

Echter, we zijn minder tevreden met de langzame responstijden van het beeldscherm, het ontbreken van Quick Charge en de minimale voordelen van de Kirin 659 ten opzichte van de Kirin 655 in de Honor 6X. Ghosting komt regelmatig voor en de laadtijden van meer dan twee uur zal frustrerend zijn voor intensieve gebruikers. De Honor 7X voelt niet per se langzamer of sneller dan de voorganger. Op onze wensenlijst voor de opvolger staan betere camera’s, een luidere koptelefoon en een mogelijk helderder beeldscherm.

De Honor 7X wordt door velen gezien als beste Android smartphone in z’n segment. Vooral consumenten in Noord-Amerika zullen het zwaar krijgen een beter alternatief te vinden voor $200 zonder een gok te wagen op een onbekend importproduct. We hopen dat de opvolger geen last meer heeft van ghosting en de lange laadtijden.
