Fluiten tijdens het werk. De Asus ROG GU501GM is een competent gaming-toestel dat met zijn aantrekkelijke, dunne behuizing een geslaagd evenwicht vindt tussen stijl en kracht. Helaas zijn er problemen met de stabiliteit van de CPU en het ventilatorgeluid, die roet in het eten gooien voor de anders uitstekende - hetzij dure - laptop.

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 54 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 10727 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 588200) Hz waargenomen.

De GU501GM tracht de beste elementen van de Zephyrus M in een lagere prijsklasse te introduceren. Voor het grootste deel slaagt het toestel hier ook in. Dezelfde, slanke en hoogwaardige behuizing (zonder het elegante scharniermechanisme aan de onderkant) worden opnieuw toegepast, evenals het toetsenbord, de luidsprekers en de performante Core i7-8750H.

Helaas maakte deze CPU een ietwat gemengde indruk. De verhoogde prestaties komen prima van pas voor de meeste taken, al lijkt de CPU niet in staat om zijn hoge kloksnelheden aan te houden onder extreme belasting. De ventilatoren geven ook aanleiding tot frustratie; hun hoge, fluitende geluid klinkt weinig aangenaam en zal snel de aandacht trekken in een drukke kamer of koffiebar. Gelukkig kunnen deze problemen omzeild worden. Hoewel het systeem crasht bij zware belasting van de CPU, worden alle andere taken prima afgehandeld. De verschillende ventilator-modi helpen bij het beheersen van het ventilatorgeluid, al gaat dit ten koste van warmteontwikkeling en lagere prestaties.

Al bij al is er weinig waar we niet van houden in de GU501GM, maar gezien de prijs zijn er eveneens weinig goede redenen - naast het uiterlijk - om voor het toestel te kiezen. Voor de officiële $1900 is de GU501GM simpelweg te duur; er bestaan andere, goed ontworpen toestellen met vergelijkbare specificaties voor minder geld (bv. Asus eigen Strix-serie). Voor dezelfde prijs, of een beetje meer, kunnen gebruikers upgraden naar krachtigere hardware is een beter totaalpakket, zoals de Gigabyte Aero 15x of de MSI GS65 Stealth Thin. Zelfs voor de huidige winkelprijzen van rond $1500 kunnen we de GU501GM moeilijk verkiezen boven zijn concurrenten.

De GU501GM is simpelweg een luxeproduct. Hoewel de behuizing prachtig is en de machine degelijke prestaties neerzet, is zijn prijs te hoog. Alleen meer waarde hecht aan design dan alle andere factoren zou de GU501GM in overweging moeten nemen; zelfs dan zijn er volgens ons echter betere alternatieven.
