GTX 1060 ontketend. Intels gloednieuwe desktop hexa-core Core i7-8700 is de ster van Schenker's nieuwe 15 inch Apex notebook. Het apparaat is enigszins overmaats voor een gaming notebook en bevat een snelle GeForce GTX 1060 GPU. De laptop mist G-Sync ondersteuning maar biedt in ruil daarvoor vele aansluitingen. Helaas wordt het apparaat geplaagd door een probleem niet gerelateerd aan gamen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (41.9 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 20490 Hz ≤ 99 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 20490 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 99 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 20490 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 54 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 10374 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 588200) Hz waargenomen.

Toegegeven, de Core i7-8700 CPU is overmatig krachtig voor gamen alleen. Echter, dit hoeft geen slechte eigenschap te zijn aangezien de gebruikelijke nadelen zoals een hoog energieverbruik en luid koelsysteem nu ontbreken.

Alles bij elkaar is de Apex 15 een aantrekkelijke notebook. Echter, het slecht ontworpen beeldscherm gooit roet in het eten.

Voor een prijskaartje van €1700 krijg je een solide gaming notebook zonder extra's zoals G-Sync of Thunderbolt 3. Als je niet van plan bent om een hogere resolutie dan FHD te gebruiken, zal de GTX 1060 de komende jaren nog voldoen, vooral aangezien de Apex 15 het maximale uit de grafische kaart weet te halen.

De verbindingsmogelijkheden laten de notebook opvallen tussen de concurrenten en ook de onderhoudsmogelijkheden zijn praktisch perfect. Inderdaad, het beeldscherm is niet volledig geschikt voor gamen, maar het paneel vervult z'n rol. De snelle CPU wordt vergezeld door een vlotte SSD en het lage energieverbruik resulteert in lange looptijden. De meeste kritiek betreft het beeldscherm, in het bijzonder de beeldschermdeksel. Hoewel we simpelweg niet begrijpen welke keuzes hebben geleid tot het huidige ontwerp, verdient de notebook nog steeds onze volledige steun. Als je meer grafische rekenkracht nodig hebt, is MSI notebook met GTX 1070 wellicht een betere keuze. Echter, wees bewust van het TN beeldscherm.
