Minisforum EliteMini B550 Review: Compacte Mini PC met een externe grafische kaart

Minisforum krijgt steeds meer aandacht in dit land. Hun portfolio omvat reeds een brede reeks Mini PC's voor dagelijks kantoorgebruik. Een compacte gaming PC was eerder beschikbaar met de Minisforum EliteMini HX90. Dat model beschikte echter niet over een specifieke grafische processor

Minisforum slaat een iets andere weg in met de Minisforum EliteMini B550. Eerst en vooral is dit model een zeer compacte Mini PC gebouwd op een AM4 platform. Dit betekent dat de Barebone versie kan worden besteld met ofwel een AMD Ryzen 7 5700G of een AMD Ryzen 7 4700G. Als onderdeel van de AMD Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), levert de Integrated Graphics Processing Unit (iGPU) beperkte grafische prestaties. Om dit te verhelpen, kan een montagekit worden besteld die de Mini PC voorziet van een interface met een externe grafische kaart via een PCIe uitbreidingsbus. Voorwaarde is natuurlijk wel dat zowel de externe grafische kaart als de netvoeding beschikbaar zijn. Alle andere benodigde kabels worden meegeleverd.

In principe werkt deze oplossing goed. Tegelijkertijd heeft het wel iets van een noodoplossing om de grafische prestaties op te voeren.

Zoals reeds vermeld, is de MinisForum EliteMini B550 beschikbaar in een barebone versie. Je moet rekenen op 310 Euro ($319) zonder de CPU, RAM of SSD. Voor een volledig geconfigureerd apparaat (Ryzen 7 5700G, 32 GB RAM en 512 GB SSD) moet je rekenen op 749 euro (809 dollar). Onze testconfiguratie is momenteel online beschikbaar voor 669 euro. Dat omvat de Ryzen 7 5700G, 16GB RAM, en een 512GB M.2 SSD en ruimte voor drie massaopslagapparaten in totaal. De voeding is ook inbegrepen.

Een barebone versie kan worden besteld met ofwel een AMD Ryzen 7 5700G of een AMD Ryzen 7 4700G. Als onderdeel van de AMD Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), levert de Integrated Graphics Processing Unit (iGPU) beperkte grafische prestaties. Om dit te verhelpen, kan een montagekit worden besteld die de Mini PC voorziet van een interface met een externe grafische kaart via een PCIe uitbreidingsbus. Voorwaarde is natuurlijk wel dat zowel de externe grafische kaart als de netvoeding beschikbaar zijn. Alle andere benodigde kabels worden meegeleverd.

Minisforum EliteMini B550 in detail

Zaak

Vanuit een puur visueel perspectief past de Minisforum EliteMini B550 prima in de EliteMini PC familie, zij het met een kleine afwijking van het gebruikelijke kleurenschema. De Minisforum EliteMini B550 is overwegend grijs en zwart en zorgt voor een algeheel geslaagde visuele impact. Een opvallende blauwe LED strip licht op bij het opstarten en emuleert daarmee een inschakellampje. De koeloplossing doet denken aan andere Mini PC's uit de Minisforum stal. En waarom toch het wiel opnieuw uitvinden. Lucht wordt aangezogen via de bovenkant van de behuizing en afgevoerd via de zijwanden.

Kunststoffen domineren de materialen met een vleugje aluminium als accenten. De look en feel van de unit is van hoge kwaliteit. De GPU bevestigingsbeugels zijn van hoge kwaliteit, ook al bestaan ze ook uit plastic en aluminium. De externe grafische kaart moet verticaal in de PCIe-sleuf van de Minisforum EliteMini B550 worden gestoken en vervolgens worden vastgeschroefd. De montage zelf is zeer stabiel en het proces is snel voltooid. Met iets meer dan een kilo voelt de Minisforum EliteMini B550 merkbaar licht aan en met zijn basis van slechts 15,8 cm bij 16,6 cm neemt hij heel weinig ruimte in op het bureau. De 120W voeding voegt slechts nog eens 600 gram toe aan de weegschaal.

Aansluitapparatuur

De Minisforum EliteMini B550 biedt een overvloed aan externe aansluitingen. Wat echter opvalt, is dat alle belangrijke poorten zich aan de achterkant van de behuizing bevinden. In totaal zijn er vier USB 3.2 Type A en één Type C poort. Monitoren worden op de Mini PC aangesloten via HDMI of DisplayPort. In totaal kunnen maximaal drie monitoren tegelijkertijd worden aangesloten. Men moet echter wel afzien van het gemak van een SD-kaartlezer.

Aansluitapparatuur

In de EliteMini B550 zit een MediaTek RZ608 WLAN Module verborgen. Onze testrun was niet al te overtuigend. De Minisforum EliteMini B550 eindigde op de laatste plaats ten opzichte van onze vergelijkbare apparatuur. Positief is echter dat het apparaat stabiele gegevensoverdrachtssnelheden via het WLAN levert. Bovendien bevat ons testapparaat ook een RJ45 interface die overdrachtssnelheden tot 2,5 Gbps kan leveren.

Prestaties

CPU

De nu bekende APU, de AMD Ryzen 7 5700G, verenigt de acht Z3 cores en een AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 iGPU onder een heat spreader. Laten we even stilstaan bij de CPU prestaties van de Minisforum EliteMini B550; prestaties die 'grote' desktops meer dan bij kunnen houden. Al met al zijn de prestaties van de AMD Ryzen 7 5700G goed, ook al doen ze het in sommige categorieën niet zo goed als in onze eerdere CPU review van deze specifieke processor. De APU levert ongeveer tien procent in bij multicore tests. Desondanks zijn de prestaties vergelijkbaar met die van een AMD Ryzen 5 5600X.

De AMD Ryzen 7 5700G doet het over de hele linie goed tegen de prestatieniveaus van een AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX. Intel's mobiele 8 core processor wordt ruimschoots overtroffen door de Ryzen. We gebruikten de eerstgenoemde in onze review van de Zotac Magnus EN173070C

Wij hebben reeds vastgesteld dat de bouwtechniek van Minisforum een doeltreffende oplossing biedt voor de koeling van componenten in andere testtoestellen. De Minisforum EliteMini B550 levert waarheidsgetrouwe stabiele prestaties onder continue belasting. Met behulp van onze Cinebench R15 multicore benchmark is er geen merkbare prestatievermindering, zelfs niet na meerdere iteraties.

Oplossing voor applicatieprestaties en opslag

Een basisconfiguratie van de Minisforum EliteMini B550 zonder externe grafische kaart slaagt erin om zowel de EliteMini TH50 als de EliteMini HM90 te overtreffen. Maar zodra we het vergelijken met de Minisforum EliteMini HX wordt het een beetje moeilijker. Hoewel slechts een paar procentpunten verschil tussen de twee, is het verschil niet echt merkbaar. Zodra er echter een speciale grafische kaart in het spel is, is dat niet langer het geval. Onze keuze voor een Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 is representatief voor een kaart aan de bovenkant van middenklasse producten van dit type. Als zodanig geeft het de Minisforum EliteMini B550 een aantal serieuze benen als het gaat om grafische prestaties. De prestatieverbetering van een dedicated grafische kaart ten opzichte van de iGPU is gewoon enorm. Desondanks ligt dit koppel qua prestaties nog steeds achter op de Zotac ZBOXMagnus EN173070C

De massaopslag eenheid die in onze testeenheid is geïnstalleerd is van de Kingston lijn en levert solide prestaties. In totaal kunnen er drie massaopslag eenheden worden geïnstalleerd in de behuizing. Hiervoor zijn er twee M.2 interfaces en een sleuf voor een 2,5 inch opslagapparaat.

met zijn iGPU en een AMD Radeon RX Veg 8, zorgen voor slechts marginaal levensvatbare gaming. Zoals blijkt uit Dota 2 Reborn, zijn het enkel oudere titels die zonder beperkingen speelbaar zijn. Pas wanneer we de speciale

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 introduceren, verandert deze compacte nummerkraker in de ware kleuren van een Mini PC voor serieuze gaming. In deze configuratie is er voldoende grunt om onbelemmerd gamen op 1080p te garanderen. Afhankelijk van het spel zijn ook hogere resoluties mogelijk. En dan is het zinvol om even te kijken naar onze GPU vergelijkingstabellen

De prestaties van de Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 in combinatie met de Miniforum EliteMini B550 liggen op ongeveer hetzelfde niveau als een van onze testsystemen gebouwd op een AMD Ryzen 9 5900X. Verschillen als gevolg van eventuele beperkingen van de grafische kaart zijn nauwelijks merkbaar bij hogere resolutieniveaus. De hogere IPC van de AMD Ryzen 9 5900X ten opzichte van de AMD Ryzen 7 5700G is alleen duidelijk bij lagere resolutieniveaus. We hebben dezelfde grafische kaart getest in een eGPU case aangesloten via Thunderbolt en ontdekten dat de prestaties 25 procent hoger waren dan op een Minsiforum EliteMini TH50

Wie de Minisforum EliteMini B550 koopt als kleine kantoor PC of als gaming apparaat kan er zeker van zijn dat het geluidsniveau geen probleem is. Het koelsysteem is uitstekend en werkt goed, zelfs onder zware belasting. Een rustig gebrom van niet meer dan 37 dBA is nog net hoorbaar. Maar omdat het om laagfrequent gebrom gaat, is het niet echt een probleem. Toen de externe grafische kaart en de voeding eenmaal waren geïnstalleerd op het test systeem, kwam er vrijwel geen geluid meer uit deze twee componenten op de Mini PC. Andere componenten waren duidelijk luider. Omdat deze twee componenten optionele toevoegingen waren, hebben we geen metingen van het geluidsvolume hiervan opgenomen in onze tests.

Temperaturen

We gebruiken Prime95 en FurMark voor stresstests en de Miniforum EliteMini B550 wordt daarbij tot het uiterste opgerekt. Onze metingen beperken zich uitsluitend tot de compacte PC zonder een dedicated grafische kaart. De AMD Ryzen 7 5700G draait onder belasting op een stabiele 4,1 GHz. De temperatuurmetingen zijn geen reden tot bezorgdheid. Met iets meer dan 80°C presteert de APU ruim onder zijn limiet, terwijl de iGPU nog koelere temperaturen registreert met 68°C. We hadden eerder al vastgesteld dat continue belasting weinig invloed had op de prestaties, toen we metingen deden met de Cinebench R15 multicore benchmark. Het komt dan ook niet als een verrassing dat een later uitgevoerde 3DMark benchmark geen slechtere resultaten liet zien dan bij een koude start.

Stroomverbruik

Het stroomverbruik van de Minisforum EliteMini B550 in ruststand ligt tussen slechts 8,9 en 11,8 watt. De Elite Mini B550 ontpopt zich daarmee tot een zeer energiezuinige, compacte kantoorassistent. Grote desktopsystemen verbruiken doorgaans meer energie. Onder belasting piekt het stroomverbruik op 102 watt, iets wat de 120-watt voeding probleemloos voor elkaar krijgt. Zo blijft er nog een kleine reserve over voor extra opslagapparatuur.

Verdict - Een snelle mini-PC met een Gaming optie

Minisforum heeft een nieuwe aanpak gekozen met zijn EliteMini B550. Als u op zoek bent naar een compacte mini-PC, dan is dit toestel een veilige keuze. Het gebruik van deAMD Ryzen 7 5700Glevert een solide prestatie bij dagelijks gebruik. De 8 cores zorgen voor een betrouwbare multi core prestatie, zelfs onder belasting. De Minisforum EliteMini B550 verandert echter pas in een gaming PC wanneer hij wordt uitgerust met een speciale GPU. Het grote voordeel van het GPU dock is dat het de gebruiker de vrije hand geeft bij de keuze van een grafische kaart. Andere compacte Mini PC's, bijvoorbeeld deZBOX Magnus EN173070C, bieden slechts één optie, een Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Mobile. Je moet echter wel houden van de manier waarop het systeem in elkaar wordt gezet, want het nogal onconventionele ontwerp heeft veel weg van een 'werk-in-uitvoering' gevoel. De vereiste aparte voeding zit op tafel naast dit ongewone bouwwerk.

Over het geheel genomen is de Minisforum EliteMini B550 een goede keuze als je weinig ruimte hebt en je je upgrademogelijkheden voor grafische prestaties open wilt houden. De barebone zonder componenten kost je 309 Euro ($319). Met de CPU, RAM en SSD zoals hier besproken, bent u op zoek naar 669 Euro ($699). Als we dan de GPU en de benodigde voeding toevoegen, komen we snel en gemakkelijk boven het duizend Euro prijsniveau uit. Wanneer we onze review configuratie vergelijken met de ZBOX Magnus EN173070C die een prijskaartje van 1.650 Euro ($1.800) draagt, komen we als winnaar uit de bus. Het zou niet moeilijk moeten zijn om een klein nadeel rond grafische prestaties te slikken. Beide producten zullen even goed presteren bij het gamen op 1080p of 1440p.

De Minisforum EliteMini B550 is een gelikte en zeer compacte rekenmachine. Als je ervoor kiest om het GPU dock te vullen, kun je deze kleine PC omtoveren in een zeer snelle gaming machine die zich kan meten met grote desktop PC's.

De Minisforum EliteMini B550 doet het goed met het geluidsniveau. Er is hier zeker niet veel op aan te merken. Het is overduidelijk dat een compacte PC zoals deze niet geruisloos zal werken. Toch slaagt Minisforum er op de een of andere manier in om deze socketed AMD Ryzen 7 5700G effectief en met weinig lawaai te koelen. Als je alternatieven overweegt, en je hebt de Dragon Canyon NUC in gedachten, is het een wenselijk alternatief met een barebone configuratie die ook een externe GPU kan herbergen. De geluidsniveaus onder belasting zijn echter duidelijk luider en als u gevoelig bent voor geluid, kunt u beter kiezen voor de Minisforum EliteMini B550.

De Minisforum EliteMini B550 is momenteel rechtstreeks bij Minisforum verkrijgbaar. De Barebone prijs is momenteel 309 Euro. Onze test apparatuur die een Ryzen 7 5700G, 16 GB RAM en een 512 GB SSD bevatte is geprijsd op 669 Euro. De top-of-the-range configuratie met 32 GB RAM is geprijsd op 749 Euro
