Minisforum EliteMini TH50 Review: Compacte desktop PC voor dagelijks kantoorgebruik

Als systeemfabrikant is Minisforum inmiddels voor velen een begrip, ook al is de Chinese fabrikant in dit deel van de wereld nog niet erg wijdverbreid. Het productportfolio reikt van IOT mini-PC's tot kantoorapparatuur en compacte spelcomputers. We konden al kennismaken met enkele systemen uit de EliteMini reeks. Tot nu toe diende echter een APU van AMD als basis voor deze PC's. Nu vertrouwt de EliteMini TH50 op een Intel Tiger Lake SoC en biedt dus nog meer gebruiksmogelijkheden.

De Intel Core i5-11320H is een solide SoC en biedt een solide basis. Records zullen met deze processor niet worden gebroken, maar de prestaties zouden voldoende moeten zijn voor het beoogde gebruik. Uitgerust met 16 GB DDR4 RAM en een 512 GB SSD, voorzag Minisforum ons van het topmodel. De fabrikant vraagt US$669 voor deze configuratie. De EliteMini TH50 is ook verkrijgbaar als barebones versie zonder SSD. De prijs van US$629 zonder SSD is echter niet zo'n grote besparing. Er moet ook rekening mee worden gehouden dat er geen Windows licentie is inbegrepen bij de aankoop zonder een massa opslag apparaat. Bovendien wordt altijd 16 GB RAM geïnstalleerd in de EliteMini TH50 omdat het op de printplaat is gesoldeerd.

De Minisforum EliteMini TH50 wordt geleverd in een stevige doos met geschikte accessoires om het systeem op te starten. De voeding is compact en levert 65 W via USB-C. Daarnaast is er een montageplaat voor bevestiging aan een beeldscherm (VESA-montage) in de leveringsomvang. Intern kan het apparaat worden uitgerust met twee extra 2,5-inch massaopslagapparaten.

Koffer & Uitrusting

De structuur van de Minisforum EliteMini TH50 lijkt sterk op die van de Minisforum Elitemini HM90. De behuizing is gemaakt van een aluminium body, wat het systeem een goede stabiliteit geeft. De boven- en onderkant zijn van kunststof, wat qua kleur goed past bij de aluminium basis. Qua kleur moet je wel van de combinatie zilver en wit houden, aangezien er geen alternatieven zijn. Het systeem biedt geen opvallende optische hoogtepunten, maar dat hoeft ook niet want functionaliteit is veel belangrijker

Over koeling gesproken: die was bij de EliteMini HM90 al heel overtuigend. Ook dit keer blijft het principe hetzelfde. Verse lucht wordt aan de bovenzijde aangezogen en via de koeler aan de zijkant uit de case geleid.

Het apparaat kan gemakkelijk worden geopend via de bodemplaat. Vier schroeven bevestigen de bodemplaat aan de behuizing. Eronder is echter niet veel te zien. Zowel de WLAN module als de SSD kunnen worden verwisseld. Bovendien kunnen nog twee 2,5 inch dataschijven in het apparaat worden opgeslagen. Deze zijn direct op de bodemplaat bevestigd en met korte kabels met de printplaat verbonden.

Op het gebied van externe aansluitingen biedt de EliteMini HM50 verschillende mogelijkheden om extra apparaten aan te sluiten. In totaal zijn er zes USB-A interfaces beschikbaar, wat meer dan voldoende zou moeten zijn. Er is ook Thunderbolt 4 ondersteuning waarop externe docking oplossingen kunnen worden aangesloten, waardoor een breed scala aan opties mogelijk is om de connectiviteit van de EliteMini TH50 uit te breiden. We hebben ook een externe GPU oplossing getest om te zien welke gaming prestaties verwacht kunnen worden met het kleine systeem. Er zijn ook twee 2.5G Ethernet poorten, samen met een HDMI en een DisplayPort. Wie ook de Thunderbolt poort gebruikt voor beelduitvoer, kan met de EliteMini TH50 tot drie beeldschermen tegelijk aansturen.

Belangrijke opmerking

Er is een USB-C-poort aan de achterkant, die bedoeld is voor de voedingsadapter. Minisforum wijst er expliciet op om de voedingsadapter niet aan te sluiten op de Thunderbolt 4-poort. Na contact met de fabrikant werd bevestigd dat het verkeerd aansluiten van de voeding ertoe leidt dat het systeem niet opstart en het moederbord onherstelbaar wordt beschadigd.

Prestaties: Voldoende reserves

De Minisforum EliteMini TH50 wordt aangedreven door de Intel Core i5-11320H. Deze SoC wordt ondersteund door 16 GB DDR4 RAM en biedt daarmee een goede basis voor de meeste toepassingen. De snelle NVMe SSD biedt 512 GB aan opslagruimte in onze configuratie en zou voor de meeste gebruikers voldoende moeten zijn. Als alternatief is de EliteMini TH50 ook verkrijgbaar met een 256 GB SSD. We raden echter nog steeds aan om te kiezen voor de 512 GB variant vanwege het lage besparingspotentieel

Processor

De Intel Core i5-11320H behoort tot de Tiger Lake serie en komt uit de laptop demografie. De zuinige SoC biedt vier native cores en acht threads met een TDP van 35 W. De single-core prestaties zijn vrij positief en zijn vaak maar een paar procent slechter dan de concurrentie met veel snellere SoC's. De EliteMini TH50 moet echter de mededingers met zes en acht cores voor laten gaan in de multi-thread benchmarks. Desondanks doet ons testexemplaar het goed en komt het grotendeels in het kwadraat met de Intel NUC10i7FNH

De Intel Core i5-11320H wordt gespecificeerd met een vermogenopname van 35 W. Niettemin konden we een vermogenopname van de SoC tot 48 W onder belasting voor een korte tijd documenteren. Dit is echter maar van korte duur, dankzij de turbo van de SoC. Helaas kan in het BIOS van de Minisforum EliteMini TH50 geen verdere aanpassing van de vermogenslimiet worden ingesteld. Dit is ook het geval geweest bij de AMD-gebaseerde systemen, dus verwacht een soortgelijke optie voor de EliteMini TH50

Systeemprestaties en rendertests

In de synthetische benchmarks neemt onze Minisforum EliteMini TH50 het opnieuw op tegen deIntel NUC10i7FNH. Door snellere SoC's van de andere vergelijkingstoestellen is het bereiken van een betere klassering hier niet mogelijk. Toch doet de EliteMini TH50 het goed en is het gat met de EliteMini HM90 niet erg groot. De gemeten latency onder belasting en tijdens het afspelen van 4K video is erg goed en er zijn geen dropouts. De Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 iGPU wordt tot ongeveer 26% gebruikt tijdens het afspelen. Zelfs na het starten van Prime 95 neemt de DPC latency niet veel toe.

Wat gebeurt er met een extern GPU dock en de gebruikte Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 is hier indrukwekkend te zien als je kijkt naar de LuxMark en ComputeMark resultaten. Het volledige potentieel van de externe grafische kaart kan niet worden gerealiseerd in de SPECviewprf benchmarks.

Massa-opslag

Ons testsysteem is uitgerust met een 512 GB NVMe SSD, wat ook het topaanbod is voor de EliteMini TH50. Er is geen grotere SSD af-fabriek, maar dat betekent niet dat je deze niet zelf kunt vervangen. Niettemin zou 512 GB opslag genoeg moeten zijn voor de meeste doeleinden, gezien het feit dat de gebruiker nog 450 GB beschikbaar heeft minus de Windows installatie

De SSD die hier is geïnstalleerd maakt gebruik van het M.2-2280 slot en biedt zeer hoge overdrachtssnelheden dankzij het NVMe protocol. We zijn erg te spreken over de 4K leessnelheid van meer dan 60 MB/s. Als alternatief kunt u twee 2,5-inch massaopslagapparaten installeren in het bodempaneel. Alle benodigde beugels, schroeven en aansluitkabels worden meegeleverd.

Grafische kaart

De geïntegreerde grafische eenheid van de Intel Core i5-11320H is de Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 met 96 EU's. Over het geheel genomen geven de hier getoonde prestaties precies weer wat je van deze iGPU kunt verwachten. Vergeleken met AMD's Radeon RX Vega 8kan de Intel iGPU heel goed bijblijven en zichzelf vaak zelfs vooraan plaatsen

We hebben de GPU prestaties hier ook getest met behulp van de Razer Core X en een Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 en waren in staat om goede resultaten te behalen. Verrassend genoeg waren de waarden beter dan die van de Zotac Magnus One met een geïnstalleerde Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070

Gaming prestaties

Minisforum adverteert de EliteMini TH50 niet expliciet als een gaming PC. Niettemin zijn op de homepage enkele waarden te vinden, die de gaming prestaties moeten helpen verduidelijken. Wie de EliteMini TH50 koopt, moet er rekening mee houden dat de geïnstalleerdeIntel Iris Xe Graphics G7slechts een eenvoudige iGPU is. De prestaties zijn vergelijkbaar met de iGPU van de AMD Ryzen 9 5900HXals we alleen kijken naar de gaming prestaties op dit punt

Met de Thunderbolt 4 poort hebben gebruikers nu echter meer mogelijkheden om de 3D prestaties te verbeteren met behulp van externe GPU docks. We hebben de EliteMini TH50 getest met de Razer Core X, uitgerust met een Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060en gekeken naar wat er verwacht kan worden op het gebied van gaming prestaties

Het is duidelijk dat de prestaties niet te vergelijken zijn met een conventioneel desktop systeem. In de geteste games lagen de prestaties ongeveer 40 procent onder ons testsysteem (basis AMD Ryzen 9 5900X), dat we gebruiken voor onze grafische kaart tests. Het voordeel ten opzichte van de iGPU is echter nog steeds zeer duidelijk. Alle geteste games presteren vloeiend, zelfs met de Intel Core i5-11320H in combinatie met onze Razer Core X en de Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060. Dit is een duidelijk voordeel ten opzichte van de AMD-gebaseerde mini-PC's, die nog steeds niet over Thunderbolt beschikken. Dit zou in de nabije toekomst echter verleden tijd kunnen zijn, want de nieuwe AMD APU's zullen ook gebruik kunnen maken van een moderne interface zoals USB4.

Minisforum gebruikt voor de EliteMini TH50 dezelfde koeltechniek als voor de EliteMini HM90- de axiale ventilator zuigt de koude lucht van bovenaf aan en drukt deze naar beneden op het koellichaam, zodat de warme lucht aan de zijkant van de kast kan ontsnappen. Het principe is goed doordacht en werkt zeer goed. DeIntel Core i5-11320H bereikte een maximum van 86 °C. De SoC bevindt zich dus duidelijk in de groene zone. Aangezien de stresstest een extreem scenario is, kunnen bij normaal gebruik veel lagere temperaturen worden verwacht. De permanente belasting had echter geen negatieve invloed. Het 3DMark11 benchmark resultaat ligt op hetzelfde niveau als de koude start en varieert slechts met een paar punten binnen de meettoleranties.

Geluidsemissies

Dankzij het uitgekiende koelontwerp is ook het gemeten geluidsniveau onder belasting matig. Het apparaat is bijna geluidloos in de ruststand en het geluid van de ventilator ligt onder belasting net onder 32,5 dB(A). Niettemin is er in het begin een duidelijk hoger toerental waarneembaar. We hebben hier bijna 41 dB(A) gemeten, maar dit is slechts van zeer korte duur

Energieabsorptie

Wat het energieverbruik betreft, slaat de Minisforum EliteMini TH50 een zeer goed figuur. Dankzij de zuinige SoC is het stroomverbruik vrij nominaal, zelfs onder belasting met een gemiddelde van 52,7 W. De voeding moet echter wel in korte tijd tot 72 W compenseren. Bovendien kan de voeding worden belast wanneer twee extra opslagapparaten worden geïnstalleerd. Daarom hadden we liever een voeding van maximaal 90 W gezien.

De Minisforum EliteMini TH50 is een zeer compacte mini-PC met goede prestaties voor een breed scala aan toepassingen. Met de Intel Core i5-11320H laat de EliteMini TH50 een positieve indruk achter door de goede single-core prestaties. Met zijn vier cores kan de SoC ook goed meekomen in multi-threaded toepassingen en kan hij het opnemen tegen deIntel NUC10i7FNH, die is uitgerust met een zes-core SoC. Samen met 16 GB werkgeheugen en de 512 GB SSD krijg je een prima apparaat in de topconfiguratie. Daarnaast verzamelt de EliteMini TH50 pluspunten met zijn moderne connectiviteit. Vooral de Thunderbolt optie zou de meeste toegevoegde waarde moeten bieden voor gebruikers

De Minisforum EliteMini TH50 is een zeer goede all-round PC die meer kan dan eenvoudige kantoortaken.

Over het geheel genomen overtuigt de EliteMini TH50 met stabiele prestaties. De Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 heeft ook een grote stap voorwaarts gemaakt op het gebied van 3D prestaties. Hier worden de prestaties van de AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 overtroffen. Daarmee is de EliteMini TH50 in beperkte mate ook geschikt voor gaming. De 3D prestaties kunnen worden uitgebreid met een extern GPU dock via de Thunderbolt interface, waarmee de EliteMini TH50 een volwaardige gaming PC wordt

De kleurencombinatie van zilver en wit is een kwestie van mening, maar je kunt niet anders dan hem mooi vinden. Minisforum biedt geen alternatieve kastkleuren voor de EliteMini TH50. De afwerking is goed en de uitbreidbaarheid met extra opslag bays kan snel worden gedaan

Voor de prijzenvanaf US$629kan de EliteMini TH50 rechtstreeks bij Minisforum worden aangeschaft. U moet echter wel rekening houden met US$669 voor ons test systeem. Wij noemen onze testconfiguratie een koopadvies omdat een Windows licentie alleen is inbegrepen bij de configuraties met een opslagschijf.
