Review van de Minisforum EliteMini HM90 desktop PC met snelle AMD Ryzen APU

Vooralsnog is Minisforum niet bekend in dit land. Toch biedt de Chinese fabrikant al geruime tijd mini-pc's aan voor kantoorgebruik. Met de EliteMini HX90 heeft Minisforum nu ook een kleine gaming PC in zijn portfolio. De fabrikant heeft echter veel kritiek gekregen over dit product.

De Minisforum EliteMini HM90 is in eerste instantie bedoeld voor kantoor- en multimediagebruik. Volgens de website van de fabrikant zou hij echter ook in staat moeten zijn om speelbare framerates te halen in min of meer moderne titels. Hierop komen we later terug. De AMD Ryzen 9 4900H vormt het hart van de mini-PC en levert een behoorlijk prestatieniveau. Al met al presteert de AMD Ryzen 9 4900H in de EliteMini HM90 behoorlijk goed. De mini-PC kan worden gekocht als een barebones kit of voorgeconfigureerd met RAM en SSD. Momenteel moet je 419 euro (~$475) neertellen voor het barebones systeem. De configuratie met 32 GB RAM en een 512 GB SSD kost daarentegen 659 euro (~$765). Het systeem wordt rechtstreeks vanuit China gratis verzonden. De importbelasting van 19 procent is echter van toepassing op elke import in Duitsland. De Minisforum EliteMini HM90 wordt ook aangeboden met een AMD Ryzen 5 4600H, hoewel deze momenteel is uitverkocht en niet significant beter geprijsd is dan de versie met de Ryzen 9 APU die wij reviewen

Ons review apparaat beschikt over 16 GB RAM en een 256 GB SSD. De PC wordt geleverd met Windows 10 Professional (de barebones kit niet). Alles zit in een kleine behuizing met de volgende dismissie: 149 x 55 x 149 (BxHxD) millimeter. Daarmee is de Minisforum EliteMini HM90 een stukje groter dan MSI's Cubi 5 M10. Maar de Intel NUC 10 is wat compacter qua afmetingen

De Minisforum EliteMini HM90 wordt geleverd in een stevige doos met alle accessoires om het systeem aan de praat te krijgen. De relatief grote USB-C voeding valt goed op. Verder zitten er in de doos twee adapterplaten om twee extra 2,5 inch SSD's in de EliteMini HM90 te installeren. Een Vesa-bevestiging om hem aan een monitor te monteren is ook aanwezig, het is bijna standaard voor dergelijke mini-pc's. Veel meer configuraties zijn te vinden onder de naam Elitemini op de websitevan de fabrikant. Het is de moeite waard om daar eens een kijkje te nemen als de EliteMini HM90 niet uw eerste keus is.

Koffer & connectiviteit

De behuizing is gemaakt van aluminium. De boven- en onderkant zijn echter van plastic. De Minisforum EliteMini HM90 heeft geen problemen met de stijfheid. Voor een beter gevoel zou het echter beter zijn geweest als de bovenzijde ook van aluminium was gemaakt. Dit is echter slechts muggenziften, want er zijn geen zichtbare gebreken. De plastic bovenklep komt qua kleur overeen met de aluminium behuizing. De witte en zilveren kleuren overheersen, wat een goede zaak is, omdat stof niet meteen opvalt op lichte kleuren. Bij donkere kleuren is dat niet het geval

Het apparaat kan worden geopend door de bodemplaat te verwijderen. Vier kleine schroeven verbinden de bodemplaat met de behuizing. Het RAM-geheugen, de SSD en de Wi-Fi-module zijn gemakkelijk toegankelijk zodra de bodemplaat is verwijderd. Verdere demontage is mogelijk, hoewel de fabrikant de antennekabels op de Wi-Fi-module heeft bedekt met een soort lijm die eerst moet worden verwijderd. Het risico bestaat dat de kabels scheuren, daarom hebben we daar in dit geval van afgezien. Verdere demontage is ook niet nodig, want volgens de fabrikant mag de CPU koeler niet worden verwijderd, omdat dit de APU zou kunnen beschadigen. Er is een notitie in de doos die vermeldt dat vloeibaar metaal werd gebruikt en we denken dat het koellichaam op zijn plaats gelijmd is

Op het gebied van externe poorten biedt de EliteMini HM90 veel mogelijkheden voor het aansluiten van extra apparaten. Een totaal van vijf USB-A poorten is meer dan genoeg. Bovendien is er ook een Type-C poort aan de voorkant. Externe beeldschermen kunnen worden aangesloten via DisplayPort of HDMI. Maar de USB-C poort biedt ook de mogelijkheid van beelduitvoer met behulp van een geschikte adapter. Zo kunt u tot drie beeldschermen tegelijk aansluiten op de Minisforum EliteMini HM90.

Prestaties - Veel reserves

Zoals reeds vermeld, wordt de EliteMini HM90 mini forum geleverd met een AMD Ryzen 9 4900H, wat een energiezuinige notebook APU is die zonder problemen gekoeld kan worden. De prestaties van de 8-core zijn in alle opzichten volledig voldoende voor alledaags kantoor- of multimediagebruik. In feite kan de APU eenvoudige taken met groot gemak aan. Maar zoals het gezegde luidt: hebben is beter dan nodig hebben, zoals we allemaal weten. De 16 GB aan dual-channel DDR4 RAM past goed bij het systeem en levert het beste prestatieniveau. Je kunt verdeeld zijn over de SSD, maar 256 GB is voldoende voor een starter build. Dankzij het voorgeïnstalleerde besturingssysteem is de Minisforum EliteMini HM90 na een paar minuten instellen en personaliseren klaar voor gebruik.

Processor

De AMD Ryzen 9 4900H behoort tot de Renoir serie en is gebaseerd op de Zen2. De SoC biedt een totaal van 8 kernen met 16 threads, wat vooral handig is voor multi-threaded applicaties. In de CPU benchmarks is de Ryzen 9 4900H in staat om de meeste van de concurrentie te overtreffen. De single-core prestaties zijn ruwweg op hetzelfde niveau als die van de Intel Core i7-10710U die wordt gevonden in de Intel NUC 10. Ons recensie-exemplaar kan ook verrassend goed gelijke tred houden met de Zotac Magnus One in termen van CPU prestaties, gezien het feit dat de compacte gaming laptop wordt geleverd met een desktop CPU.

De AMD Ryzen 9 4900H heeft een TDP van 45 W. De vermogenslimiet kan echter worden verhoogd tot 54 watt in het BIOS van de Mini Forum EliteMini HM90. Dat gezegd hebbende, zagen we geen significante verbeteringen in de prestaties in onze review na het overschakelen naar de hogere vermogenslimiet.

Prestaties van het systeem

De Minisforum EliteMini HM90 laat zien hoe krachtig hij is in de synthetische benchmarks. Ons review apparaat verslaat met gemak de Intel NUC 10 met de Intel Core i7-10710U. Vergeleken met de Intel Ghost Canyon NUC en de Zotac Magnus One doet ons review apparaat het niet zo goed. De reden hiervoor is de ontbrekende dedicated grafische kaart, waardoor de prestaties lager zijn in de synthetische benchmarks. De Minisforum EliteMini HM90 vertoont geen latency pieken onder belasting en tijdens het afspelen van 4K video's. De latency neemt wel iets toe na het starten van de 4K video. Toch gingen we uit van een iets beter resultaat vanwege de prestaties. De drivers lijken hier nog niet perfect geoptimaliseerd te zijn

Massa-opslag

Ons testsysteem wijkt een beetje af van de voorgeconfigureerde systemen op de winkelpagina van de fabrikant door een 256 GB NVMe SSD te hebben. Als u geen barebonesysteem bestelt, krijgt u altijd een 512 GB SSD, wat voor de meeste gebruikers op dit moment voldoende zou moeten zijn. Ons 256 GB model is prima voor de meeste gebruiksscenario's. In de review leverde ons model met de Kingston SSD fatsoenlijke resultaten. In totaal kunnen er tot drie SSD's worden geïnstalleerd in de Mini Forum EliteMini HM90. Je kunt een M.2 2280 schijf gebruiken, die al is geïnstalleerd in ons systeem. Als alternatief kun je twee 2.5-inch SSD's installeren, die op de bodemplaat worden geschroefd en met kabels rechtstreeks op het moederbord worden aangesloten. Alle beugels, schroeven en kabels worden meegeleverd.

Grafische kaart

De geïntegreerde grafische eenheid van de AMD Ryzen 9 4900H is bekend als AMD Radeon RX Vega 8. De iGPU's van de mobiele Ryzen APU's bestaan al een paar jaar, wat ook terug te zien is in de prestaties. Terwijl de AMD's iGPU's aanvankelijk zeer concurrerend waren met Intel's iGPU's, worden AMD's geïntegreerde GPU's verslagen door de huidige Intel Iris Xe iGPU's die te vinden zijn in de nieuwste Tiger Lake SoC's. Helaas kan Minisforum alleen gebruik maken van de hardware die op grote schaal beschikbaar is op de markt. Als het gaat om GPU prestaties, is de AMD Ryzen 9 4900H ongeveer zo goed als het kan worden.

Minisforum gebruikt voor de EliteMini HM90 een axiale ventilator, die de koude lucht van boven aanzuigt en naar beneden op het koellichaam richt, zodat de warme lucht langs de zijkanten van de kast kan ontsnappen. Het systeem werkt goed en er waren geen prestatiedalingen als gevolg van thermische beperkingen in onze review. Bij gebruik op een bureau moeten gebruikers erop letten dat er niets bovenop het apparaat wordt geplaatst, zodat voldoende frisse lucht kan worden aangezogen. De fabrikant beweert vloeibaar metaal te gebruiken om de CPU te koelen. We konden dit echter niet verifiëren omdat het uit elkaar halen van het systeem kan leiden tot schade aan de SoC. Onder volle belasting bereikten de CPU temperaturen van 86,3 °C (187,34 °F), hoewel de iGPU iets koeler was met 74 °C (165,2 °F). Dit betekent dat de SoC nooit te heet wordt. Als de SoC middelmatig wordt belast, zijn de temperaturen zelfs nog lager. Onder aanhoudende belasting bleven de prestaties stabiel. Het resultaat van de 3DMark11 benchmark is bijna identiek aan de koude start en varieert slechts met een paar punten binnen de meettoleranties.

Systeemgeluid

In een werkapparaat, of het nu een notebook of een desktop PC is, verwachten we een laag geluidsniveau, want niets is erger dan luidruchtig ventilatorgeluid. Minisforum heeft hier zeer goed werk geleverd. De enige ventilator meet 75 millimeter en draait op een laag toerental. Als de ventilator stationair draait, is hij onhoorbaar, tenzij je je oor er heel dicht bij legt. Hier hebben we een geluidsdrukniveau van 30,8 dB(A). Maar zelfs onder volle belasting tijdens de stresstest, kunnen we niet echt een hinderlijk geluid waarnemen. Met 32,5 dB(A) is de Minisforum EliteMini HM90 nu wel iets luider, maar dit is nog steeds een erg stille PC. De ventilatorsnelheid wordt zeer soepel geregeld en er is geen intermitterend gejank door hoge snelheden

Energieverbruik

Wat energieverbruik betreft is de Minisforum EliteMini HM90 behoorlijk zuinig, hoewel Intel het met zijn NUC's nog wel wat beter zou kunnen doen. Waar het op neerkomt is dat de EliteMini HM90 met zijn 8-core aanzienlijk meer prestaties biedt. In de GPU stresstest, de Zotac Magus One en ook de Intel Ghost Canyon NUC worstelen met ongelijke condities als gevolg van de dedicated grafische kaart, dus we moeten hier niet te veel in lezen. We konden echter slechts een maximum van 85 watt uit ons testsysteem halen, wat de relatief grote 120 watt voeding gemakkelijk aankan. Aangezien onze configuratie geen 2,5 inch schijf bevat, is er nog genoeg ruimte om te manoeuvreren

Verdict - Geweldige prestatie maar verspild potentieel

Review van de Minisforum EliteMini HM90, ter beschikking gesteld door Minisforum

De Minisforum EliteMini HM90 is een zeer compacte mini PC die door zijn eigenschappen meer een allrounder is dan een klassieke kantoor PC. Met de AMD Ryzen 9 4900H biedt de kleine PC een zeer goed prestatieniveau in multi-threaded applicaties. Dankzij de voordelen van Zen2 zijn de single-core prestaties ook op een goed niveau en kunnen concurreren met de Intel Comet Lake-U SoC's. Ons review-apparaat heeft 16 GB RAM en een 256 GB SSD, en het biedt meer dan genoeg prestaties voor dagelijks kantoorgebruik. In feite wordt de SoC in de meeste gevallen nauwelijks gebruikt. Het is echter goed om een zeer toekomstbestendig systeem te hebben. In combinatie met een speciale grafische kaart zou de Minisforum EliteMini HM90 het ook prima doen als compacte gaming PC. Daarom beperkt het ontbreken van een Thunderbolt poort zijn bruikbaarheid enigszins.

De Minisforum EliteMini HM90 is een zeer krachtige all-rounder die veel meer aankan dan alleen eenvoudige kantoortaken. De AMD Ryzen 9 4900H wordt volledig benut door het systeem.

Wie de kleine PC als streaming box in de huiskamer wil gebruiken zal positief verrast zijn door hoe stil hij is. Verder zorgt de SoC voor een hoog goed niveau van multimedia prestaties. Hoewelalleen een iGPU beschikbaar is, kan de Minisforum EliteMini HM90 worden gebruikt om een game of twee te spelen. Je zult echter wel wat opofferingen moeten accepteren op het gebied van resoluties of visuele instellingen in nieuwere titels. De AMD Ryzen APU kan echter met gemak casual games aan.

De kleurencombinatie van zilver en wit zal aantrekkelijk zijn vanuit een puur esthetisch oogpunt. Minisforum biedt geen alternatieve kastkleur voor de EliteMini HM90. Over het algemeen hebben we niets slechts te zeggen over hoe het systeem eruit ziet. Omdat er geen glanzend zwart plastic is, zal de EliteMini HM90 niet veel duidelijk zichtbare microkrasjes krijgen.

Prijs en beschikbaarheid

De Minisforum EliteMini HM90 is verkrijgbaar als kit vanaf €419 (~$475) rechtstreeks van de site van de fabrikant. Wie echter diep in de buidel tast, kan voor €659 (~$746) een versie krijgen met 32 GB RAM en een 512 GB SSD.
