Microsoft Surface Pro 7 Plus in review: Tiger Lake zorgt voor prestatieverbetering

Tijger en Draak. LTE-modem, Tiger Lake, verwisselbare SSD - Microsoft voegt nieuwe functies toe aan de Surface Pro 7 en noemt het hele pakket Surface Pro 7 Plus. Consumenten kunnen het apparaat (nog) niet kopen. De verkoopgroep beperkt zich vooralsnog tot bedrijven en scholen.

De Surface Pro 7 is al sinds 2019 verkrijgbaar. Daarom vindt Microsoft dat het tijd is om wat updates te introduceren. Binnenin zitten er nu Tiger Lake in plaats van Ice Lake processoren, de SSD kan vervangen worden, de batterijcapaciteit is iets toegenomen en een LTE-modem is optioneel beschikbaar - dat laatste alleen in combinatie met een Core i5 processor. Uiterlijk is er vrijwel niets veranderd ten opzichte van de reguliere Surface Pro 7-modellen. De Surface Pro 7 Plus concurreert met de Dell Latitude 12 7210en deLenovo Yoga Duet 7.

Aangezien we al twee Surface Pro 7 modellen hebben gereviewd, zullen we in deze review niet verder ingaan op de behuizing, connectiviteit, invoerapparaten en luidsprekers. De bijbehorende informatie is te vinden in de review van de Core i5 Surface Pro 7

Verder flikkert het scherm met een frequentie van 199,2 Hz bij helderheidsniveaus van 57% (gelijk aan ongeveer 119 cd/m²) en lager. Vanwege de lage frequentie kunnen gevoelige gebruikers last krijgen van hoofdpijn en/of oogproblemen

Het beeldscherm laat meteen een goede kleurweergave zien en voldoet aan de doelstelling (Delta E minder dan 3) met een kleurafwijking van 1,5. Het beeldscherm heeft ook geen last van een blauwe tint. Daarnaast zorgt kalibratie voor lichte verbeteringen: De kleurafwijking daalt tot 1,4, en grijstinten worden evenwichtiger weergegeven. Het beeldscherm kan de AdobeRGB (63,7%) en sRGB (96,8%) kleurruimten niet volledig reproduceren

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (38.5 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 199.2 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 57 % (119 cd/m²) en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 199.2 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Fllickering treedt alleen op aan een relatief lage helderheid. Daarom kan langdurig gebruik binnenshuis met deze helderheidsinstelling vermoeiend zijn.

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9729 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 151500) Hz waargenomen.

Het kijkhoekstabiele IPS-paneel kan vanuit elke positie worden gelezen. Het biedt voldoende helderheid om ook buitenshuis te kunnen worden bekeken. Het glanzende displayoppervlak belemmert echter vaak de leesbaarheid

Prestaties - Meer prestaties dankzij Tiger Lake

De Surface Pro 7 Plus van Microsoft is een 12,3-inch 2-in-1-apparaat voor bedrijven en scholen dat voldoende rekenkracht biedt voor kantoor- en internettoepassingen. Er zijn verschillende configuraties beschikbaar

Processor

Microsoft heeft gekozen voor Tiger Lake CPU's voor het Plus-model van de Surface Pro 7. Ons review-exemplaar is uitgerust met een Corei5-1135G7 quad-core

processor die draait op een basiskloksnelheid van 2,4 GHz. Een verhoging naar 3,8 GHz (alle kernen) of 4,2 GHz (één kern) is mogelijk via Turbo. Hyper-Threading (twee threads per core) wordt ondersteund.

De multithread-tests van de Cinebench-benchmarks worden uitgevoerd op 3 tot 3,5 GHz, terwijl de single-thread tests worden uitgevoerd op 3,1 tot 4,1 GHz. Op batterijvoeding zijn de kloksnelheden respectievelijk 2,4 tot 2,8 GHz (multithread) en 1,5 tot 2,5 GHz (single-thread).

We controleren of de CPU Turbo consequent wordt gebruikt wanneer hij is aangesloten door de multithread test van de Cinebench R15 benchmark gedurende ten minste 30 minuten in een ononderbroken lus uit te voeren. Kloksnelheden boven 3 GHz worden alleen in de eerste drie minuten van de test bereikt. In het verdere verloop moet de CPU worden afgeremd en zakt hij onder zijn basis kloksnelheid - de passieve koeling wordt hier merkbaar.

Al met al zijn de benchmark resultaten goed. De Tiger Lake processor reageert op korte belastingspieken met veel rekenkracht en presteert beter dan de Ice Lake Core i5 processor in de Surface Pro 7. Bij langdurige belasting worden de prestaties echter op de knieën gedwongen

Opslag

Een 256 GB NVMe SSD (M.2-2230) van Samsung dient als systeemschijf, en het levert goede overdrachtssnelheden. Het is echter niet een van de beste SSD-modellen. Het vervangen van de SSD kan gemakkelijk worden gedaan dankzij een klein onderhoudsluikje, maar het aanbod van SSD's in het M.2-2230 formaat is (nog) beperkt. Het luikje wordt magnetisch vastgehouden en kan worden geopend met de meegeleverde SIM-tool of vergelijkbare apparatuur

Grafische kaart

Intel's geïntegreerde IrisXe Graphics G7 80EUs GPU is verantwoordelijk voor de grafische uitvoer. Deze ondersteunt DirectX 12 en bereikt een operationele kloksnelheid van maximaal 1.300 MHz. De Witcher 3 test toont aan dat de Tiger Lake GPU ongeveer zeven minuten op volle snelheid kan werken. Daarna eist de passieve koeling zijn tol.

De 3DMark resultaten behoren tot de beste waarden die we tot nu toe hebben vastgesteld voor de hier geïnstalleerde GPU. Vergeleken met de Ice Lake Surface Pro 7 modellen is er een aanzienlijke toename in grafische prestaties

Gaming prestaties

De Surface Pro 7 Plus is geen gaming-apparaat. Desalniettemin: De geïnstalleerde CPU-GPU combinatie is over het algemeen in staat om veel van de games in onze database soepel op het scherm te brengen - bij lage resoluties en lage kwaliteitsinstellingen.

Aangezien de CPU en GPU na een paar minuten worden gesmoord, dalen de framerates als gevolg daarvan. Daarom raden we titels aan die geen overdreven hoge hardware-eisen stellen en zelfs bij lagere kloksnelheden nog soepel draaien.
