Nieuwe oorden opzoeken? Sneller SoC, grotere batterij, betere camera, hoogwaardig scherm en uitstekend design. De S-klasse van Samsung staat voor uitmuntendheid en onze verwachtingen staan dan ook hoog gespannen. In de meeste gevallen worden deze ook ingelost, maar de Galaxy S7 heeft toch een aantal zwaktes.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 238.1 Hz ≤ 100 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 238.1 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 100 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 238.1 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 54 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 10377 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 588200) Hz waargenomen.

Terwijl de Samsung Galaxy S6 met zijn nieuwe metalen behuizing een ware revolutie betekende voor Samsung's vlaggenschip, is de nieuwe Galaxy S7 meer een evolutie. Samsung respecteert de wensen van zijn klanten en brengt een aantal features terug, waaronder geheugenuitbreiding en IP68-certificatie voor de behuizing tegen water en stof. De behuizing werd eveneens herwerkt en bestaat nog altijd uit een erg geavanceerde combinatie van glas en metaal, die zelfs met de beste modellen op de markt weet te concurreren. Een kleine verrassing is het merkbaar dikkere profiel, maar dit tast de bruikbaarheid nauwelijks aan dankzij de afgeronde randen. De extra ruimte werd gebruikt voor een grotere batterij. Het SAMOLED-paneel is nog beter dan voordien en kan uitpakken met een indrukwekkende helderheid en erg nauwkeurige kleuren.

De Galaxy S7 maakt ook een erg goede indruk op het vlak van performance, al zal de concurrerende Snapdragon 820 over het algemeen waarschijnlijk toch de snellere chip zijn. Samsung's SoC heeft wat last van throttling maar de resulterende vermindering in prestaties blijft aanvaardbaar en de gebruiker kan op zijn beurt genieten van lage temperaturen van de behuizing. Een andere nieuwe feature is de 12-MP-camera aan de achterzijde die qua kwaliteit erg hoge toppen scheert. We krijgen scherpe en heldere foto's te zien, ondanks de verminderde resolutie ten opzichte van de voorganger.

De Samsung Galaxy S7 is één van de beste smartphones, maar je kan maar beter geen baanbrekende vernieuwingen verwachten.

Niet alle ontwikkelingen zijn echter positief: in vergelijking met de voorganger moet je het stellen zonder de infraroodzender en Samsung heeft het volle potentieel van de connectiviteit niet ten volle gebruikt. Dat er geen USB-C is heeft waarschijnlijk te maken met compatibiliteit met de Samsung Gear VR, maar een snellere standaard zou welkom zijn. Volgens ons is het grootste probleem dat de Galaxy S7 net hetzelfde aanvoelt als elke andere Galaxy-smartphone uit het recente verleden, wat veel te maken heeft met de software. Alles bij elkaar genomen is er een gebrek aan innovatie. De enige nieuwe feature is het Always-On Display, maar deze heeft een merkbaar nadelige invloed op de batterijduur.

Toegegeven, we zijn streng in onze kritiek, maar de reden hiervoor is dat de Galaxy S7 duidelijk één van de beste smartphones is die je momenteel kan kopen. De volgende paar maanden zullen in dit opzicht erg interessant worden aangezien de nieuwe vlaggenschip-smartphones van de concurrentie dan verschijnen. We zullen in de loop van de volgende paar dagen ook de grotere Galaxy S7 Edge onder de loep nemen.
