Goede prestaties voor een eerlijke prijs? De Venus Series NAB9 van Minisforum is uitgerust met Intels krachtigste Alder Lake H-model, wat geweldige prestaties belooft. Toch blijkt uit de vermogenslimieten dat Minisforum de Intel Core i9-12900HK een beetje aan de leiband heeft gelegd, tenminste wat betreft de maximale turbo. Mini PC Intel Alder Lake Desktop

De Venus Series NAB9 is de nieuwste krachtige mini PC uitgebracht door de fabrikant Minisforum. Het is een kleine PC gebaseerd op een Intel Core i9-12900HK die momenteel al verkrijgbaar is vanaf US$359 (MRSP: US$439). Deze prijs geldt echter alleen voor het barebone model, dat niet is uitgerust met RAM of een SSD. De topconfiguratie van de Venus Series NAB9, die wij testen, kost US$509 (MRSP: US$629). Deze is uitgerust met 32 GB RAM en een SSD van 1 TB. Als alternatief biedt Minisforum zwakkere modellen op dezelfde basis die zijn uitgerust met een Intel Core i7-12650H (NAB6) of een Intel Core i7-12700H (NAB7). De prijzen verschillen niet veel van elkaar.

Zaak

Visueel ziet de Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 er niet anders uit dan de NAB6 of de NPB5: de behuizing is hetzelfde, wat natuurlijk dezelfde voor- en nadelen heeft. Een positief punt is hoe stabiel hij gebouwd is - dit is te danken aan het feit dat de behuizing van metaal gemaakt is. Het deksel en de onderkant zijn van plastic, waardoor het iets goedkoper aanvoelt dan de metalen oppervlakken. Over de bouwkwaliteit hebben we niets negatiefs te zeggen.

Dankzij het compacte formaat zal de Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 niet al te veel ruimte innemen op uw bureau. Het apparaat neemt slechts 12,7 cm x 12,7 cm in beslag. Toch is ons testexemplaar niet het meest compacte in het vergelijkingsveld. Beide modellen van Geekom (XT12 Pro, A7) zijn nog compacter. De Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 kan ook aan de achterkant van een monitor worden bevestigd met behulp van de meegeleverde VESA-bevestiging. Het apparaat zelf weegt slechts 615 gram en de voeding voegt slechts 277 gram toe aan uw weegschaal.

Connectiviteit

Minisforum heeft de Venus Series NAB9 uitgerust met verschillende externe poorten die verdeeld zijn over de voor- en achterkant van het apparaat. In totaal heeft de mini-pc zeven USB-poorten, waarvan er drie Type-C zijn. Helaas zijn het geen USB4-poorten. Toch kunnen ze gebruikt worden als display-uitgangen en samen met de HDMI-poorten kan de PC tot vier schermen tegelijk van stroom voorzien. De maximaal ondersteunde resolutie is 4K@60Hz.

Communicatie

Minisforum heeft een WLAN-module van Mediatek in de NAB9 geplaatst. We zijn dit model al vaker tegengekomen, hoewel de prestaties in dit apparaat aanzienlijk onder het gemiddelde van de module lagen. Vergeleken met zijn concurrenten moet de Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 zijn nederlaag toegeven. Toch is de bandbreedte goed genoeg voor alledaags kantoorwerk. We gebruikten de Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 als testrouter. Als alternatief biedt de Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 twee RJ45-aansluitingen, die beide overdrachtsnelheden tot 2,5 GBit/s mogelijk maken.

Onderhoud

Het is supergemakkelijk om onderhoud uit te voeren aan de Minisforum Venus Series NPB9. Het deksel van de behuizing kan zonder gereedschap worden verwijderd en daaronder bevinden zich alle belangrijke onderdelen zoals SSD, RAM en de WLAN-module. Omdat Minisforum de NAB9 ook als barebone-versie aanbiedt, kunt u de componenten heel eenvoudig installeren. De CPU ventilator, die zich aan de onderkant van het apparaat bevindt, is iets lastiger te bereiken. Hiervoor moet u de bodemplaat verwijderen. De fabrikant raadt af om de CPU-koeler te verwijderen, omdat deze gebruik maakt van vloeibaar metaal.

Prestaties - Intel Alder Lake-H met 14 cores en 20 threads

De Venus-serie NAB9's van Minisforum Intel Core i9-12900HK is een zeer krachtige SoC. De processor voert alledaagse taken probleemloos uit.

Testomstandigheden

We hebben alle prestatietests uitgevoerd met het energieprofiel maximale prestaties. De prestaties van de SoC werden niet in het BIOS gewijzigd, maar in de geleverde staat van de PC gelaten, volgens de instellingen van de fabrikant.

Processor

De Minisforum Venus-serie NAB9 is uitgerust met de Intel Core i9-12900HK. De SoC behoort tot de Alder Lake serie en is het topmodel van de 12e generatie mobiele processors. De SoC debuteerde al in 2022, wat betekent dat het geïnstalleerde model niet meer helemaal up-to-date is. Toch liet de prestatievergelijking een zeer goed resultaat zien, aangezien de Intel Core i9-12900HK ondanks zijn leeftijd de nieuwere processors kon bijbenen. We hebben uitstekende single-core prestaties gedocumenteerd en ook de multi-core prestaties waren constant hoog. In totaal hebben gebruikers 14 cores met 20 threads tot hun beschikking. Minisforum geeft de Intel Core i9-12900HK een stroomverbruik van maximaal 64 watt. Dit is iets minder dan wat Intel als maximum opgeeft. Onder continue belasting daalt het energieverbruik echter slechts licht naar 45 watt.

DPC latenties

We hebben geen verhoogde latentie waargenomen tijdens gewoon surfen op het web. We merkten deze alleen op bij het afspelen van de 4K-testvideo. Er waren echter geen dropped frames en over het algemeen had de Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 geen problemen met het afspelen van video's in hoge resolutie. Daarom zijn wij van mening dat het apparaat geschikt is voor gebruik als streamingclient.

Opslagapparaten

De Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 bevat een 1-TB SSD van Kingston. De SSD in ons testsysteem maakt hoge werksnelheden mogelijk en dit werd bevestigd in de benchmarkresultaten. De lees- en schrijfsnelheden waren foutloos en zelfs onder permanente belasting bleven ze stabiel. Minisforum heeft een relatief grote koeleenheid op de SSD zelf geïnstalleerd, die voorzien is van een actieve koeler. Er kunnen in totaal twee SSD's in de PC worden geïnstalleerd. Naast de NVMe SSD in ons testexemplaar is er ruimte voor nog een 2,5-inch opslagapparaat onder het kastdeksel. Deze kan echter maar een maximale bouwhoogte van zeven millimeter hebben.

De Intel Iris Xe Graphics G7 zorgt zowel voor 3D-berekeningen als voor de beelduitvoer op de Minisforum Venus Series NAB9. Hoewel dit een van de snelste iGPU's in de serie is, moet Intel duidelijk toegeven dat het de nieuwere iGPU's van AMD heeft verslagen. Intel heeft alleen de architectuur van zijn iGPU's op basis van Meteor Lake herzien. U kunt kijken naar de Acemagic F2Aals voorbeeld bekijken. Toch levert AMD nog steeds iets meer 3D-prestaties met zijn Radeon 780M.

Veel spellen overweldigen de iGPU en deze kan alleen speelbare framerates leveren bij lage resoluties met weinig details. In een directe vergelijking met de concurrentie bleef ons testexemplaar achter bij de Geekom A7 en de Acemagic F2A. Helaas is er geen mogelijkheid om het apparaat met een externe grafische kaart te gebruiken om de 3D prestaties te verbeteren. Geluidsemissies

Natuurlijk is de Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 niet een van de stilste apparaten. Toch werkt het systeem relatief stil, met slechts 45 dB(A) onder belasting. De gemiddelde geluidsemissie van 42,8 dB(A) is niet veel stiller, waarbij hij slechts 27 tot 33 dB(A) haalt bij stationair draaien. De PC werkt op geen enkel moment helemaal geruisloos.

Temperatuur

De behuizing van de Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 warmt slechts licht op bij stationair draaien. Onder belasting worden de metalen oppervlakken een stuk warmer. De ventilatoruitgangen bevinden zich aan de rechterkant en aan de achterkant van de pc.

De processor zelf bereikte tijdens de stresstest slechts 78 °C, wat een indrukwekkend resultaat is. De gemiddelde temperatuur van de computer ligt met 71 °C een stuk lager en werd bereikt bij een continue belasting van 45 watt. Met dit in gedachten had de fabrikant een iets conservatievere ventilatorcurve kunnen kiezen om de geluidsemissies een beetje te beperken. Minisforum had de Intel Core i9-12900HK echter ook een hogere vermogenslimiet kunnen geven, aangezien de koeleenheid zeker krachtig is.

Stroomverbruik

Wat betreft efficiëntie kan de Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 zijn concurrenten niet meer bijhouden. Het stroomverbruik is een stuk hoger onder belasting, maar ligt nog steeds binnen een acceptabel bereik. Waarden van drie cijfers werden slechts kort bereikt, waarbij het gemiddelde stroomverbruik uitkwam op ongeveer 83 watt. De 120 watt voeding levert altijd genoeg energie en heeft zelfs genoeg reserves voor een tweede opslagapparaat.

Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 beoordeling - testexemplaar geleverd door Minisforum

De Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 biedt indrukwekkende prestaties. De Intel Core i9-12900HK kan nog steeds concurreren met modernere SoC's als het gaat om CPU-prestaties alleen. Wat 3D-prestaties betreft, is de nu verouderde iGPU duidelijk inferieur aan de nieuwere modellen van Intel en AMD. De Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 kan echter geen efficiëntieprijzen winnen, zoals blijkt uit de waarden voor het stroomverbruik. Prijstechnisch kost de Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 u met US$509 geen arm en een been, hoewel de Geekom A7 of de Acemagic F2A aanzienlijk duurder zijn. Beide concurrenten bieden iets meer prestaties, ook al heeft de Acemagic F2A niet per se de beste aansluitmogelijkheden. De poortselectie van de NAB9 is goed als u puur op aantallen afgaat. Aan de andere kant heeft hij helaas geen USB-4 poorten, waardoor het apparaat veel beter gebruikt zou kunnen worden.

De Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 is een aantrekkelijk werkapparaat met fantastische prestaties. De Minisforum Venus Series NAB9 kan zich op dit moment echter alleen onderscheiden van de grote massa mini-pc's door zijn prijs.

Visueel zult u zich erbij moeten neerleggen dat de mini-pc zilver is, maar dat is niet erg. Alle oppervlakken zijn gelijkmatig uitgelijnd en we hebben geen enkele bouwfout geconstateerd. Helaas heeft Minisforum besloten om geen behuizing van aluminium te gebruiken, wat de haptiek nog meer zou hebben verbeterd. Dit zou er zeker toe leiden dat de huidige prijs niet langer gehandhaafd zou blijven en dit is precies wat het apparaat op dit moment een zeer interessante keuze maakt.
