Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme G4 Review: De beste Mutlimedia Laptop dankzij Core i9 en RTX 3080?

De vierde generatie van Lenovo's high-end multimedia laptop is ook beschikbaar met een krachtigere dampkamerkoeloplossing, die de implementatie van veel krachtigere grafische kaarten mogelijk maakt. Door de grotere omvang van de koeling missen deze modellen echter het secundaire M.2-SSD slot en de optionele WWAN module; deze zijn alleen beschikbaar op modellen met reguliere koeling en deGeForce RTX 3050 Ti.

We hebben de vergelijkbaar gebouwde workstation tegenhanger al besprokenThinkPad P1 G4met de Core i7 processor en Nvidia'sGeForce RTX 3070, en nu hebben we een blik op de high-end spec van de nieuwe X1 Extreme G4 met een Intel Core i9 en de GeForce RTX 3080. Net als de RTX 3070, is dit de 90W versie van deRTX 3080, dus het is een van de traagste modellen op de markt. We willen weten of de upgrades naar de Core i9 en de RTX 3080 zinvol zijn of niet.

Prestaties - X1 Extreme met Core i9 en RTX 3080

Herziening Instellingen

Lenovo bood vroeger extra prestatie-instellingen, die beschikbaar waren via de Vantage app. Sinds een tijdje zijn ze echter geïmplementeerd in de gewone Windows energie-instellingen, wat erg comfortabel is. Kort voor de release van deze review, bood Lenovo een nieuwe BIOS-versie (1.13) met bijgewerkte thermische instellingen. We merkten kleine prestatieverbeteringen in sommige tests, dus besloten we om alle tests en metingen te herhalen met de nieuwe BIOS versie.

Processor

Onze testeenheid is uitgerust met deCore i9-11950H, die Intels vPro-technologie ondersteunt. De processor kan een maximale klok van 5,0 GHz bereiken op één core en tot 4,5 GHz wanneer je alle cores belast, respectievelijk. We zagen een maximale klok van 4,9 GHz tijdens de benchmarks voor één kern en 4,4 GHz voor alle 8 kernen, wat resulteert in een stroomverbruik van 100 Watt. Deze waarde kan slechts korte tijd worden gehandhaafd en het apparaat moet "koud" zijn, anders is het maximale TDP beperkt tot 80 W. Beide waarden dalen snel onder aanhoudende werkbelasting en de processor zal afvlakken bij iets meer dan 60W. De BIOS update naar versie 1.13 verbeterde de situatie een beetje en de prestaties waren voorheen lager. Al bij al degelijke resultaten, maar dit betekent dat de Core i9 alleen een voordeel heeft in zeer korte piekbelastingsscenario's of wanneer je één core belast, maar hij is niet veel sneller dan de vermeend tragere Core i7 chips in langdurige werkbelastingen.

De AMD tegenhangerAMD Ryzen 9 5900HXin deAsus Zephyrus Duo 15is merkbaar sneller in multi-core tests en er is geen prestatiedaling (TDP @ 70W). Apple'sM1 ProofM1 MaxCPU is ook iets sneller in native apps zoals Cinebench R23, maar ligt gewoon mijlen voor op het gebied van efficiëntie met een stroomverbruik van slechts ~30W.

Al met al heeft de optionele Core i9-11950H ook niet veel zin in de ThinkPad X1 Extreme G4. Het TDP schommelt nogal tussen 35W en 70W op batterijvoeding, dus de benchmark resultaten variëren ook (tussen 1500-1670 punten @CBR15 Multi), dus je moet rekening houden met een prestatie achterstand tussen 20-30 procent als je niet op netstroom werkt. Er zijn nog steeds ernstige grafische problemen na stand-by.

De systeemprestaties zijn over het algemeen erg goed; het systeem is subjectief erg responsief en behaalt hoge benchmark scores. Het staat echter op gelijke voet met deThinkPad P1 G4die we testten met de gewone Core i7 en de RTX 3070. De geheugenprestaties zouden ook een effect moeten hebben, want je krijgt wel 32 GB, maar slechts één module in een single-channel configuratie. Dit verklaart ook de relatief lage prestaties in AIDA's geheugen benchmarks.

Net als bij onze vorige testmodellen van de X1 Extreme G4/P1 G4, zijn er ernstige grafische problemen wanneer het apparaat ontwaakt uit stand-by en soms zelfs wanneer je 3D applicaties start of externe monitoren aansluit. Dit vereist een herstart van het apparaat en het lijkt te maken te hebben met de iGPU drivers. De enige manier om op dit moment van het probleem af te komen is Hybrid Graphics in het BIOS uit te schakelen. Lenovo zou zo snel mogelijk een oplossing voor dit probleem moeten bieden, omdat je de laptop met dit probleem niet echt betrouwbaar kunt gebruiken.

Modellen met de krachtigere dampkamerkoeling hebben slechts één M.2-2280 slot voor SSD's, maar het ondersteunt tenminste wel de snelle PCIe 4.0 interface en de Kioxia XG7 in onze unit kan gebruik maken van de nieuwe standaard. Terwijl de derde generatie van de ThinkPad X1 Extreme alleen beschikbaar was met midrange GPU's, is Lenovo nu in staat om krachtigere Nvidia RTX GPU's te implementeren dankzij de vapor chamber koeling. De snelste optie is deRTX 3080, die ook in onze review unit zit. Het is echter het 90W model en daarmee een van de traagste RTX 3080 versies. We zien een maximale kernklok van 1425 MHz in de benchmarks. Dit is niet veel sneller dan de RTX 3070 die we testten in de workstation tegenhanger ThinkPad P1 G4, maar de RTX 3080 heeft het voordeel van 16 GB VRAM.

De benchmarks laten zien dat de RTX 3080 in de X1 Extreme ongeveer 15-20 procent langzamer is dan de gemiddelde resultaten voor deze GPU en hij is eigenlijk net iets sneller dan de RTX 3070 in de ThinkPad P1 G4. Dit betekent dat de RTX 3080 alleen zin heeft als je het grotere VRAM kunt gebruiken.

De GPU prestaties zijn stabiel onder aanhoudende werkbelastingen en het apparaat komt gemakkelijk door de Time Spy stresstest. De GPU is beperkt tot 55W op batterijvoeding, wat resulteert in een prestatieachterstand van ~45 procent. Meer benchmarks met de RTX 3080 zijn te vinden in onze tech sectie.

Spelprestaties

Gamen is uiteraard mogelijk op de X1 Extreme G4, maar de prestaties voldoen wederom niet echt aan de verwachtingen voor deRTX 3080en de algemene prestaties zijn zeer vergelijkbaar met de RTX 3070 in deThinkPad P1 G4. De prestaties zijn nog steeds gemakkelijk voldoende voor maximale instellingen in de meeste games. Ondanks het 4K scherm konden we vaak niet de 4K resolutie (16:9) selecteren in veel titels, dus deze resultaten ontbreken. De gaming prestaties zijn stabiel tijdens langere sessies, maar dalen met ~40 procent (50 vs. 85 fps @Witcher 3 Ultra) op batterijvermogen. U kunt meer gaming benchmarks vinden hier.
