Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 15377 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Na het testen van de nieuwe Xperia X Compact zijn we een beetje teleurgesteld dat er geen compacte high-end Android-smartphones meer bestaan. Als je de snelste componenten wilt hebben, moet je nu voor een groter toestel kiezen of overgaan naar de concurrentie van Apple.

Eens je dit eenmaal aanvaard hebt, zal je ondervinden dat de nieuwe Sony een erg degelijke mainstream smartphone is. Bovendien werd de prijs ook verlaagd ten opzichte van de vorige Xperia Z5 Compact. Ja, de prestaties zijn in sommige situaties wat verminderd, maar je merkt dit in de praktijk nauwelijks op en de gaming-prestaties in het bijzonder hebben veel baat bij de relatief lage schermresolutie. Eén minpunt is de ontbrekende IP-certificatie en de gevoelige, glanzende plastic oppervlakken zullen niet iedereen bekoren. We waren wel erg te spreken over de lange batterijduur.

Geen high-end meer: de Sony Xperia X Compact is nu een mainstream toestel. Niettemin vertoont de compacte smartphone weinig echt grote tekortkomingen en de prestaties zijn in de praktijk meer dan toereikend, al is de concurrentie in deze prijsklasse erg sterk.

Met een prijskaartje van 449 euro (~$486; huidige winkelprijs ~410 euro/~$447) heeft de Xperia X Compact met sterke rivalen af te rekenen, waaronder het mini-vlaggenschip Honor 8 en de OnePlus 3. Beide toestellen zijn sneller en hebben een groter scherm; voor de rest zijn de verschillen eerder klein. De voorganger, Xperia Z5 Compact, blijft verkrijgbaar. Dit toestel ondersteunt 4K-video-opname en is duurzamer dankzij zijn IP-certificatie. Als je op zoek bent naar een nog compacter systeem met nog snellere componenten kan je voortaan niet meer voorbij Apple (iPhone SE).
