Gulden middenweg. De 2019 variant van de Lenovo Flex 14 biedt een behoorlijke hoeveelheid prestaties voor $800. Hoewel het er niet in slaagt om op te vallen, is het apparaat wel een goed gebalanceerde convertible.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 352.1 Hz ≤ 99 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 352.1 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 99 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 352.1 Hz is relatief hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen. Er zijn echter rapporten die beweren dat sommige mensen toch flickering met 500 Hz en hoger kunnen waarnemen: opgelet dus.

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9418 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

De Lenovo Flex 14 heeft gemengde gevoelens achtergelaten. De sterkste punten liggen in de batterijlevensduur en de opslagsnelheid. Het is moeilijk om een laptop met een NVMe-schijf te vinden voor een prijs van $800, en het feit dat de Flex 14 het een hele dag op een batterij volhoudt, maakt het apparaat nog aantrekkelijker. De Flex 14 levert echter in op het toetsenbord, een kunststof behuizing en een middelmatig beeldscherm.

De Flex 14 is misschien het meest geschikt voor studenten die op zoek zijn naar een goedkope convertible en die het niet erg vinden om in te leveren op het toetsenbord, de bouwkwaliteit en de helderheid van het beeldscherm. Er zijn vergelijkbare opties beschikbaar tegen een lagere prijs (waaronder de Asus VivoBook Flip 14). Een groter budget maakt de superieure Yoga 730 of ThinkPad X390 Yoga bereikbaar, die beide de Flex 14 op elk gebied overtreffen. De HP Envy x360 13 is ook een haalbare optie; voor $100-200 meer biedt de Envy x360 een helderder beeldscherm, beter toetsenbord en betere grafische prestaties, hoewel dit ten koste gaat van een aantal uur batterijlevensduur.

Het is moeilijk om de Flex 14 te duiden. Hoewel het apparaat in geen enkele categorie faalt, blinkt het ook niet uit. De Flex 14 is een “manusje van alles” type notebook en onderscheidt zich niet op een veelzeggende manier.
