Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 245 Hz

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 245 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) .

De frequentie van 245 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 50 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 18215 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde erg snelle responstijden in onze tests en zou zeer geschikt moeten zijn voor snelle games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 5 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (24.8 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Onze vraag "Kunnen ze dit wel laten werken?" verwees uiteraard naar het feit dat de Huawei P40 geen toegang heeft tot de Google-diensten. Het antwoord is een uitdrukkelijke "Misschien". Aan de ene kant is de Huawei P40 een high-end smartphone met een goede camera-configuratie, degelijke batterijduur, snelle prestaties en snelle Wi-Fi.

Aan de andere kant is er één groot nadeel: het ontbreken van Google-services maakt het gebruik van Google Maps of Google's Play Store onmogelijk, terwijl het ook mogelijk problemen veroorzaakt met veel andere apps. Hoewel de App Gallery gestaag groeit en het installeren van apps van onbekende bronnen in ieder geval theoretisch mogelijk is, brengt dit laatste een hoog veiligheidsrisico met zich mee voor normale gebruikers, en zelfs voor gevorderde gebruikers kan het moeilijk zijn om te zien of downloadbestanden van externe bronnen gemanipuleerd werden.

Huawei ondersteunt gebruikers op veel manieren bij de initiële installatie - onder andere via apps en services. Toch blijft het een moeilijk toestel om aan te bevelen, vooral omdat er zoveel andere smartphones zijn die gewoon meteen werken.

Dat gezegd zijnde is het mogelijk dat de situatie binnen een jaar of twee helemaal anders is, aangezien de ontwikkeling van het ecosysteem van Huawei sneller verloopt dan verwacht, waardoor Huawei een waardig alternatief kan worden voor iedereen die geen Google op zijn smartphone wilt.

De Huawei P40 is een premium high-end smartphone die gebruikers dwingt tot compromissen vanwege het gebrek aan Google-services.

Bovendien lijkt de fabrikant zich voornamelijk te focussen op de P40 Pro, en daardoor voelt het alsof de P40 achterloopt in een rechtstreekse vergelijking met zijn concurrentie: ten eerste kan slechts één van de camera's worden gebruikt om video's op te nemen en beperkt de optische zoom zich tot foto's.

Daarnaast is de verversingssnelheid van het scherm beperkt tot de gebruikelijke 60 Hz, terwijl de Galaxy S20 meer te bieden heeft. De helderheid van het scherm zou ook hoger mogen, er is geen draadloos opladen en bovendien zullen potentiële kopers zich moeten afvragen of ze speciaal voor de Huawei P40 een geheugenkaart willen kopen, omdat micro-SD niet wordt ondersteund.
