Kort testrapport Huawei MateBook 14 (i7-8565U, GeForce MX250) Laptop

3:2 Ultrabook. De MateBook 14 is sneller dan de MateBook X Pro van 2018 en biedt een bijzonder 3:2-scherm in plaats van de alomtegenwoordige 16:9-verhouding. Hoewel de prestaties uitstekend zijn voor het formaat, zou de CPU Turbo Boost beter mogen werken en is het ontbreken van Thunderbolt 3 pijnlijk voor de prijs van meer dan 1000 euro.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 50 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 18215 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

De MateBook 14 doet de Microsoft Surface Laptop er verouderd uitzien. Het is ongetwijfeld de superieure 3:2-laptop op het vlak van features, bouwkwaliteit, scherm en vooral grafische prestaties voor ongeveer dezelfde prijs. Als de combinatie van een unieke schermverhouding en relatief performante GPU aantrekkelijk klinkt, is de MateBook 14 perfect voor jou.

Als je vooral van plan bent om het toestel te gebruiken voor multimedia of gaming in plaats van tekstverwerking of browsen, zal een traditionelere 16:9-Ultrabook met Thunderbolt 3, zoals de Asus ZenBook S13 UX392 of Razer Blade Stealth wellicht een betere keuze zijn. De MX250 in de MateBook 14 is nauwelijks sneller dan de MX150 in de MateBook 13 en de Turbo Boost-prestaties van de CPU laten heel wat te wensen over.

De MateBook X Pro 2019, die binnenkort beschikbaar wordt, zal precies dezelfde CPU- en GPU-opties bieden als de MateBook 14, maar in nog een slankere behuizing en met meer USB Type-C-poorten en een touchscreen met hogere resolutie. Het nadeel is uiteraard de hogere prijs van 1600 tot 2000 euro ten opzichte van de <1500 euro voor de MateBook 14. Als je de MateBook X Pro interessant vindt, maar afgeschrikt wordt door de hogere prijs, is de MateBook 14 zeker het overwegen waard.

De Core i7-8565U CPU en 25-W GeForce MX250 GPU bieden weinig meer dan de Core i7-8550U en 25-W GeForce MX150 in de MateBook 13. Hoewel het een van de beste Ultrabooks is op de markt met een 3:2-schermverhouding, laten connectiviteit (poorten), clickpad en webcam (positionering) nog te wensen over.
