De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 21740 Hz ≤ 99 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 21740 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 99 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 21740 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 17916 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

De Legion Y730 bevindt zich in een moeilijke positie. Het is de dunnere, lichtere en luxueuzere versie van de Legion Y530 met meer toeters en bellen zoals LED-verlichting, aluminium oppervlakken en Thunderbolt 3, maar zonder optie voor GeForce GTX 1060 GPU, wat wel te vinden is bij zijn goedkopere alternatief. Waarom de Legion Y730 enkel met GTX 1050 Ti GPU komt, kunnen we moeilijk bevatten, zeker aangezien de laptop relatief koel blijft tijdens het gamen, met uitstekende CPU Turbo Boost-prestaties als gevolg. De behuizing kan zonder twijfel een snellere GPU aan. We vermoeden dat er snel genoeg een update aan zal komen met de volgende generatie van Nvidia-GPU's.

Het belangrijkste argument van de Y730 is zijn RGB-verlichting per toets en Thunderbolt 3-poort voor een lage prijs van ongeveer 1000 euro. De meeste instapmodellen met gaming-capaciteiten zoals de MSI GF63, Gigabyte Sabre 15 of Asus TUF FX504 doen het minstens zonder een van deze features. Op andere vlakken laat de laptop echter wat steken vallen. Zo zijn de zwart-wit-responstijden aan de trage kant, biedt het toetsenbord weinig feedback en is de schermbehuizing wat te flexibel. Gamers doen er goed aan te wachten op de onvermijdelijke update van de Legion Y730 met optie voor snellere GPU of voor de goedkopere Legion Y530 met zijn snellere GTX 1060 te kiezen.

Een vreemde mix van high-end features en uiterlijk wordt tegengewerkt door een zwakke GPU en fragiele schermbehuizing. De huidige versie van de Legion Y730 zou baat hebben bij een snelle update die de stabiliteit van het toestel en het aantal GPU-opties aanpakt.
