Op zoek naar een wonder... Honor is nu sinds enige tijd een vast merk op de Europese markten. Het Huawei-zustermerk heeft sinds kort ook een notebook in het assortiment, alhoewel voorlopig alleen op de Aziatische markten. We hebben twee varianten van de Honor Magicbook aangeschaft en vergelijken Intel tegen AMD.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (25.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (41 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 200 Hz ≤ 100 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 200 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 100 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 200 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 8773 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Samengevat: de Honor Magicbook is een compacte 14-inch notebook, die in de zakelijke- en instapniveau multimedia-segmenten hoort. Hoewel het notebook momenteel alleen in het verre oosten verkocht wordt, kan deze middels verschillende online shops geïmporteerd worden naar Europa of de VS, met prijzen van € 600 tot € 900. Als het notebook defect raakt, dan is je enige hoop de online shop, omdat Honor het notebook officieel niet verkoopt in de voorgenoemde regio's. Dit is een nadeel waar kopers zich bewust van moeten zijn.

De metalen behuizing ziet er over het algemeen van hoge kwaliteit uit, maar er zijn wel enkele minpunten te vinden. Vergeleken met concurrerende producten is de Honor Magicbook dunner en lichter. Het Magicbook doet het erg goed in de Wi-Fi-snelheidstest. Verder moet opgemerkt worden dat de Magicbook geleverd wordt met een Chinese Windows-versie en dat het upgraden of opnieuw installeren van het OS nodig is om een Engelse of Nederlandse interface te krijgen.

De invoerapparaten zijn goed, hoewel sommige Europese gebruikers zullen moeten wennen aan de QWERTY-indeling.

Met 300 candela is het beeldscherm voldoende helder en ook het contrastratio is meer dan voldoende. Het Magicbook is echter niet aan te raden voor serieuze beeldbewerking, omdat de kleurdekking te klein is (ongeveer 65% van sRGB). Een interessant detail in onze testmodellen: we zagen in de Intel-variant PWM op alle helderheidsniveaus, zelfs op maximale helderheid, terwijl we dit bij het AMD-model pas bij een helderheid van 90% of lager zagen.

De AMD-versie van de Honor Magicbook is de duidelijke winnaar qua prijs/prestatie-verhouding.

De Core i5-8250U-versie doet het slechts ongeveer 5% beter dan de aanzienlijk goedkopere AMD-versie met Ryzen 5 2500U qua CPU prestaties. Enkel 3D-werkzaamheden geven duidelijk de voorkeur aan de Intel/nVidia-combinatie. De AMD-variant beschikt slechts over een geïntegreerde Radeon RX Vega 8 GPU. Al is deze GPU aanzienlijk sneller dan bijvoorbeeld de Intel UHD 620, is deze nog steeds erg beperkt qua resoluties en detailinstellingen in games.

Beide modellen zijn over het algemeen erg stil bij kantoorwerkzaamheden, al spint de ventilator in de AMD-variant zo nu en dan op, zelfs bij lichte belastingen. De temperaturen van de AMD-variant lijken ook iets hoger in idle-modus, maar bij belasting is het juist de Intel/nVidia-variant die erg heet kan worden.

En tot slot haalt de AMD-variant van de Magicbook 9 uur in onze Wi-Fi-praktijktest, wat een goed resultaat is. De Intel-versie gaat nog een uur langer mee, en deze trend zien we ook terug in de andere batterijtests.

Ons eindoordeel is simpel: prijsbewuste kopers die vooral kantoorwerkzaamheden uitvoeren kunnen beter kiezen voor de AMD versie van de Honor Magicbook. Voor € 600 krijg je erg veel waar voor je geld, als zijn er enkele compromissen gesloten. Aan de andere kant, gebruikers die multimedia-taken en games willen kunnen doen kunnen beter de Intel/nVidia-configuratie kiezen. Het Intel-model kost bijna € 300 meer. En dat brengt het apparaat i
