Topbehuizing, maar wat met de binnenkant? HP weet zijn klanten te plezieren door toestellen te maken met een aantrekkelijk design en degelijke bouwkwaliteit. Ook de nieuwe Pavilion 14 is een premium HP-laptop voor een betaalbare prijs. We zijn eveneens geïnteresseerd in hoe de interne componenten onder zijn geborstelde, geanodiseerde behuizing presteren. Kan HP's nieuwste Pavilion-laptop zich meten met de concurrentie of ziet ie er alleen goed uit?

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 79 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (25.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Het scherm vertoonde trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.9 (minimum) tot 636 (maximum) ms. » 44 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (41 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 200 Hz ≤ 90 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 200 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 90 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 200 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 8781 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

De nieuwe HP Pavilion 14 is een betaalbare, maar stijlvolle multimedia-laptop aangedreven door een Intel Core i7-8550U-processor en een Nvidia GeForce MX150-GPU. Ons testtoestel bood aanvaardbare systeemprestaties, met uitzondering van zijn trage SSD van SanDisk. Positief is het feit dat het toestel geen last heeft van thermische throttling. Niettemin kan de Pavilion 14 zich op grafisch vlak niet meten met andere toestellen die over een GeForce MX150-GPU beschikken; zo haalt de IdeaPad 530s tot wel 50% betere framerates in gaming-benchmarks.

Ons grootste punt van kritiek heeft ongetwijfeld betrekking op het scherm van de nieuwe HP Pavilion 14. Een combinatie van een ontspiegelde afwerking en een maximale helderheid van slechts 239 cd/m² maken het toestel onbruikbaar voor buitenshuis op een zonnige dag.

Daarnaast laat het thermische beheer van ons toestel te wensen over. De Pavilion 14 wordt te warm voor een multimedia-laptop, zeker gezien zijn beperkte grafische prestaties. Bovendien wordt de ventilator erg luid, terwijl hij het toestel nauwelijks genoeg kan afkoelen. Al bij al is de koeling ontoereikend voor een Core i7-8550U in combinatie met een GeForce MX150.

De Pavilion 14 is vooral geschikt voor alledaagse applicaties en kantoorwerk. Het toestel is snel genoeg voor de meeste taken en ziet er op esthetisch vlak een stuk beter uit dan veel concurrenten. Toch zouden we aanraden om de Pavilion 15, met zijn AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, in overweging te nemen. Dit toestel heeft een beter scherm en een efficiëntere koeling en kost 200 euro minder. Je moet het dan wel zonder discrete GPU stellen en genoegen nemen met zwakkere systeemprestaties.
