Kaby Lake-G workstation. Alsof Kaby Lake-G al niet niche genoeg was, is Dell nog een stap verder gegaan en biedt de fabrikant nu een workstation-convertible met de zeldzame Intel-AMD-CPU. Het eindresultaat is een van de krachtigste 15-inch convertible-workstations ooit, al is er onderweg wel wat connectiviteit verloren gegaan.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 94 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (25.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.9 (minimum) tot 636 (maximum) ms. » 83 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd slechter is dan het gemiddelde (41 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 990.1 Hz ≤ 25 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 990.1 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 25 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 990.1 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 8781 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Als je een gebruiker bent van een traditionele workstation en nood hebt aan geïntegreerde VGA, poorten van normaal formaat, een forse behuizing, ECC-geheugen, Smart Card-lezers, talrijke opslagmogelijkheden, compatibiliteit met E-Port en eenvoudige onderhoudbaarheid, dan is de Precision 5530 2-in-1 niet voor jou. Een toestel van de Precision 7000-serie, zoals de 7720, zal in dat geval wellicht een geschiktere optie zijn.

Aan de ander kant, professionele gebruikers die hun werk onderweg steeds moeten meenemen en zich aangetrokken voelen tot het veelzijdige 360-graden-scharnier, zullen er wel goed aan doen om de Precision 5530 2-in-1 te overwegen. De CPU en GPU vinden een geslaagd evenwicht op het vlak van individuele prestaties en het heldere IGZO-scherm kan zowel sRGB en AdobeRGB nauwkeurig dekken. Ondanks de extreme draagbaarheid en dunne profiel heb je hier te maken met een verrassend krachtige workstation.

Gebruikers die op zoek zijn naar een mobiele workstation maar voor de rest geen waarde hechten aan een touchscreen of tablet-modus, vinden wellicht een alternatief in de Precision 5530 of MSI WS63VR. De behuizing van het toestel van MSI is niet zo stevig als die van de Dell, maar de opties voor geïntegreerde Quadro P3000 en P4000 Max-Q zullen op prijs gesteld worden door veeleisende workstation-gebruikers.

De Precision 5530 2-in-1 is een mobiele krachtpatser die een geslaagd evenwicht vindt tussen prestaties en draagbaarheid. Als je echter je zinnen hebt gezet op poorten en onderhoudsvriendelijkheid, is een traditioneler toestel zoals de Precision 7720 een betere en krachtigere optie.
