Een fantastisch tablet, maar geen pro.De iPad Pro 10.5 is Apple's tweede generatie in de Pro-series. Het beeldscherm is zeker de grote ster. Niet alleen is deze gegroeid qua formaat, maar heeft ook 120 Hz, HDR en claimt dekking van het P3 kleurbereik. Het tablet is op weg naar de top met zijn A10X SoC, maar voldoet nog niet helemaal als notebookvervanging.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM niet waargenomen

Ter vergelijking: 58 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 5096 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 9 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (26.9 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Apple heeft besloten om de iPad Pro 10.5 niet een volledige makeover te geven maar zich te concentreren op het verbeteren waar het echt een verschil maakt. Met name het nieuwe beeldscherm is indrukwekkend - de goede reflectie eigenschappen en HDR mogelijkheid zijn met name interessant voor fans van films, TV series en gamen. Helaas konden we niet het beloofd P3 kleurbereik meten, maar slechts het beperktere sRGB.

Het tablet heeft kwaliteit hoogwaardige communicatie modules maar ondersteund nog steeds niet het Europese Galileo GNSS-systeem. Apple heeft ook geprobeerd te besparen op het geheugen, wat langzamer is dan zijn voorganger, maar dat is in de praktijk niet merkbaar.

Veel kleine details van de Apple iPad Pro 10.5 zijn verbeterd, en het is met zekerheid één van de beste tablets die momenteel verkrijgbaar zijn.

Al met al is het Apple gelukt om een uitstekend product te maken en de lat voor tablets erg hoog te leggen. De enige echte concurrent is Samsung's Galaxy Tab S3, welke echter een oudere SoC en minder opslagruimte heeft. De opslagruimte is toegenomen, maar dat geldt ook voor de startprijs: € 649. Het kleinste model (64 GB) zal voor de meeste gebruikers voldoende zijn, zeker daar de meeste audio en video content tegenwoordig gestreamt wordt. We denk dat het tweede model met 256 GB de beste deal is en zelfs wat goedkoper dan zijn voorganger met dezelfde hoeveelheid opslagruimte. Het 512 GB model is aan te raden voor gebruikers die hun eigen multimedia collectie offline nodig hebben, of voor gebruikers die het tablet willen gebruiken voor video- en beeldbewerking.

De iPad Pro 10.5 heeft zulke goede prestaties dat je er bijna aan zult denken het tablet te gebruiken als notebookvervanger. Of het nu gaat om videobewerken van UHD materiaal of beeldberwerken met Adobe Lightroom , de iPad Pro 10.5 werkt snel en efficiënt. Wel vinden we het Smart Keyboard niet flexibel genoeg en werkt het enkel prettig op een harde ondergrond. De problemen met de Safari browser en verscheidene CMS'en en andere complexe webgebaseerde applicaties zijn hinderlijk en bestandsbeheer is te rigide. We beschouwen de iPad Pro dan ook als een fantastisch tablet, maar nog niet als vervanger van een notebook.
