Deze iPhone-generatie had eigenlijk 7S moeten heten - zo deed Apple het toch in het verleden. Gezien het bestaan van de 'anniversary iPhone', die een aantal technologieën deelt met het huidige vlaggenschip-toestel, dacht Apple echter dat het de moeite waard was om naar het volgende cijfer te springen. Hoe dan ook werd de iPhone 8 Plus op heel wat vlakken verbeterd. De nieuwe A11 SoC is aanzienlijk sneller en zou opnieuw zijn concurrenten achter zich laten.
De herziene behuizing met glazen achterkant is zowel een pro als een contra. De bouwkwaliteit is uitstekend en het toestel voelt goed in de hand, al zien de oppervlakken en reeds vuil uit na een aantal minuten gebruik. De glazen smartphone is ook gladder geworden in vergelijking met het aluminium unibody van de vorige versie.
De camera's presteren opnieuw erg goed. In de volgende dagen gaan we dieper in op de details, inclusief de batterijduur, die voorlopig eerder teleurstellend lijkt. Dan is er nog het scherm: Apple wordt op dit vlak langzaam ingehaald door de concurrentie. Niet wat accurate kleurweergave betreft, maar helderheid en contrast zouden wat beter mogen. Het wordt afwachten of dit in november met de komst van de iPhone X verandert...
