Stap voor stap. We hadden reeds verwacht dat Apple dit jaar slechts een iets verbeterde versie van zijn smartphone zou presenteren. De 8ste generatie iPhone van Cupertino krijgt een herziene behuizing en betere prestaties, wat op zijn minst meer is dan wat we de vorige jaren zagen.

De iPhone 8 is misschien wel de laatste van zijn soort, de laatste Apple-smartphone met een home-knop en IPS-scherm. Als dit het geval is, hebben de Amerikan in ieder geval voor een geslaagde afsluiter gezorgd. Opnieuw zijn er geen echt grote innovaties te bespeuren, maar niettemin verslaat de iPhone 8 zijn voorganger op veel vlakken. Een hoogtepunt is de nieuwe A11-chip, die alweer een stuk sneller is en - net zoals de meeste vorige modellen - zijn concurrenten met gemak weet te verslaan. Deze indruk krijgen we toch als we op onze initiële benchmarks afgaan. De behuizing is nu uit glas gemaakt, wat aangenaam aanvoelt, maar helaas heel wat gladder en gevoeliger is voor vingerafdrukken dan voordien (afgezien van de Jet Black iPhone 7). Het lijkt erop dat de keuze voor een glazen achterkant noodzakelijk was om draadloos opladen mogelijk te maken.

Wat kunnen we nog zeggen na 24 uur met de telefoon? Het scherm lijkt onveranderd ten opzichte van het vorige model - met uitzondering van True Tone, maar dit is alleen merkbaar bij een rechtstreekse vergelijking met het vorige model, waarbij de kleuren van de iPhone 8 er levendiger uitzien. De nauwkeurigheid van de kleuren zet opnieuw een standaard, al laten zowel helderheid als contrast nog ruimte voor verbetering. Dit is ook het geval lvoor de batterijduur, die korter is dan voordien.

We kunnen zonder gedetailleerde resultaten nog weinig zeggen over de camera's, maar de 12 MP-module van de Apple iPhone 8 behoort zonder twijfel tot de beste smartphone-camera's. We zullen alle andere aspecten in ons volledige testrapport bespreken.
