De Aorus Gaming Box GeForce RTX 2080 Ti veranderde onze kleine Intel NUC in een 4K krachtpatser

Gigabyte Aorus vloeistofgekoelde eGPU review. Een eGPU is een van de beste (en duurste) manieren waarop u uw laptop of mini-PC kunt upgraden. De prestatiewinst is aanzienlijk en komt veel dichter in de buurt van een desktop dan de meeste gebruikers wellicht aannemen.

De Gigabyte Aorus GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Gaming Box is een van de snelste externe GPU's (eGPU's) die verkrijgbaar zijn naast het recente Asus ROG XG docking station. In tegenstelling tot de Asus-oplossing maakt de vloeistofgekoelde Gaming Box-serie echter geen gebruik van propriëtaire connectoren om compatibel te zijn met elke Windows PC of laptop, zolang deze maar een Thunderbolt 3-poort heeft. De Gaming Box is zelfs beschikbaar met GeForce RTX 3090 opties, zij het in beperkte hoeveelheden.

Voor onze host PC van keuze, hebben we de Gigabyte Gaming Box gekoppeld aan de Intel NUC 11 Panther Canyon zoals hier besproken. We hadden ook het hoofdgeheugen van de NUC geüpgraded naar dual-channel 16 GB van single-channel 16 GB. De NUC 11 is opmerkelijk omdat hij is uitgerust met de nieuwste 11e generatie Core i7-1165G7 Tiger Lake CPU en Thunderbolt 4 apparaten ondersteunt tot 40 Gbps, waardoor het een perfect testobject is voor een eGPU. Het is toevallig ook een van de snelste Tiger Lake-U systemen die je op dit moment kunt kopen. Alle tests hieronder werden uitgevoerd met een 4K-monitor rechtstreeks aangesloten op de Gaming Box in plaats van de NUC om te voorkomen dat videogegevens de prestaties belemmeren.

Setup

De installatiefase verloopt relatief soepel, maar niet zonder haperingen. Volgens het boekje moeten eigenaars de Gaming Box eerst aansluiten op een stopcontact voordat ze hem aansluiten op een laptop-pc met de meegeleverde 500 millimeter Thunderbolt-kabel. Daarna zou Windows automatisch de eGPU moeten detecteren en de gebruiker moeten melden dat hij het Thunderbolt-apparaat moet goedkeuren. In ons geval kon de NUC de Gaming Box helemaal niet detecteren totdat we de Thunderbolt-stuurprogramma's hadden bijgewerkt. Alleen dan kunnen gebruikers de nieuwste Nvidia-stuurprogramma's downloaden en installeren via de GeForce Experience-software. Merk op dat de video-out poorten op de Gaming Box pas zullen werken nadat deze laatste stap is uitgevoerd

Connectiviteit

De meeste poorten bevinden zich aan de achterzijde, met slechts één USB-A poort aan de voorzijde. Er is geen aan/uit-knop, dus de eGPU is altijd "aan", zelfs als de hoofd-PC is uitgeschakeld. Het stroomverbruik is daardoor verontrustend hoog, zoals beschreven in ons Stroomverbruik-gedeelte hieronder.

Een "reset" knop op de achterkant emuleert het opnieuw aansluiten van de AC stroomkabel. Een echte aan/uit-knop zou echter beter zijn geweest.

Software

De Gaming Box software UI is slecht. Het venster is vast en kan dus niet worden gemaximaliseerd, terwijl de knoppen en grafieken ook erg klein zijn. De automatische overklokfunctie 'Auto Scan GPU Boost' liet de software ook crashen bij onze eerste poging en het bleek geen enkele invloed te hebben op de prestaties van de Gaming Box. De afschuwelijke interface is jammer omdat de functies en gegevensregistratie anders heel nuttig zijn voor enthousiastelingen.

Accessoires

De doos bevat een draagtas, een lederen draagriem, een AC-stroomkabel, een disc met stuurprogramma's, een handleiding en een korte Thunderbolt 3-kabel van 0,5 m. Wij raden u aan de nieuwste stuurprogramma's online te downloaden in plaats van de disc te gebruiken

Onderhoud

De eerste vraag die de meeste gamers zullen stellen is of de GPU in de Gaming Box kan worden verwijderd of vervangen. Het korte antwoord is ja, maar het lange antwoord is ingewikkelder. Gigabyte heeft zijn Gaming Box niet ontworpen om gemakkelijk te kunnen upgraden, in tegenstelling tot de dikkere Razer Core X of Alienware eGPU. Bovendien is de vloeistofkoeling specifiek ontworpen voor het Gaming Box-chassis, wat betekent dat eigenaars ofwel hun pc-torens moeten aanpassen om de vloeistofkoeler te kunnen plaatsen, ofwel hun eigen koeloplossingen moeten installeren alsze de RTX 2080 Ti naar hun desktops willen overbrengen. Als GPU-switching je voornaamste bedoeling is, dan zouden de eerder genoemde Razer of Alienware betere opties zijn, aangezien hun ontwerpen dit actiever aanmoedigen.

Garantie

Gigabyte biedt 2-jarige en 3-jarige basisgaranties voor zijn randapparatuur en grafische kaarten, respectievelijk. We zijn echter niet zeker of de Gaming Box wordt geclassificeerd als een randapparaat of grafische kaart en we hebben contact opgenomen met Gigabyte voor opheldering.

Prestaties

Voor we naar de gegevens springen, is het vermeldenswaard dat we een paar vreemde problemen met ons toestel ondervonden, waaronder een paar crashes bij het draaien van GTA V en Far Cry New Dawn. Spoelpiek of elektronische ruis was zeer duidelijk tijdens de eerste paar uur van gebruik. Dit zou uiteindelijk in intensiteit afnemen na verloop van tijd, maar het zou nooit helemaal weggaan. We merkten ook een zwak maar periodiek geklik op van de interne PSU, gevolgd door merkbaar micro-stotteren tijdens het gamen. Een koude herstart loste het probleem gelukkig op. Niettemin raden we nieuwe eigenaars ten zeerste aan om onmiddellijk na de aankoop te controleren op deze afwijkingen.

GPU prestatie

3DMark-resultaten liggen opvallend dicht bij een desktop-pc met een "echte" GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. Fire Strike 4K ligt slechts 7 procent achter op onze desktop-pc-referentie, terwijl Fire Strike bij FHD 21 procent achterligt om te suggereren dat het prestatiedeficit ten opzichte van een desktop RTX 2080 Ti kleiner zal zijn bij gaming in 4K-resoluties. Deze resultaten zijn consistent met wat we twee jaar geleden hebben waargenomen op de Gaming Box RTX 2070. Ruw grafisch potentieel kan overal variëren tussen 8 en 30 procent sneller dan een vlaggenschip gaming laptop met de niet-Max-Q GeForce RTX 2080.

Grafische prestaties worden verder verminderd als de monitor rechtstreeks op de NUC wordt aangesloten in plaats van de eGPU. Het prestatieverlies is opnieuw groter bij lagere resoluties, zoals blijkt uit onze tabel hieronder.

Spelprestaties

Prestaties in echte games zijn vergelijkbaar met wat de 3DMark resultaten suggereren - gemiddelde framerates zullen veel dichter bij een desktop RTX 2080 Ti liggen als ze op 4K worden uitgevoerd dan als ze op 1080p worden uitgevoerd. Het verschil zal echter sterk afhangen van het spel, waarbij CPU-zware titels zoals TotalWar: Three Kingdoms tot 30 procent langzamer draaien op onze Gaming Box setup, vergeleken met slechts 7 procent bij het draaien van FinalFantasy XV. Desondanks kunnen de meeste moderne titels een vergrendelde 4K 60 FPS op gemiddelde instellingen behouden, wat machtig indrukwekkend is voor een Intel NUC uit de Core U-serie.
