Schenker XMG NEO 17 met RTX 3080 in laptop review: Gebruikers kunnen de RTX 3080 zelf ontketenen

Aan het begin van het jaar hebben we de Schenker XMG Neo 17 gerecenseerd met AMD CPU en RTX 3070, en nu volgt een van de topmodellen met RTX 3080 en Intel Tiger Lake CPU, en het mechanische toetsenbord is ook weer aan boord. Net als bij het zustermodel kan de TGP van de grafische kaart volledig via software worden ingesteld, en de volledige 165 W kan op deze manier aan de GPU worden toegewezen. Het zustermodel was echter al erg luid onder belasting met een RTX 3070, dus hebben de ontwikkelaars het koelsysteem in de tussentijd nog getweakt?

Natuurlijk zijn er hier al wat dingen veranderd sinds 2019, maar niet per se alleen ten goede. Zo zijn bijvoorbeeld beide miniDP-poorten komen te vervallen, wat door niets wordt gecompenseerd. Anders, sommige poorten veranderen van positie: De LAN-poort verhuist nu bijvoorbeeld naar de achterkant. De twee USB-A poorten aan de rechterkant ondersteunen alleen 3.0, terwijl de USB-A poort aan de linkerkant 3.2 Gen2 ondersteunt. Hoewel de kleurafwijkingen verrassend laag zijn, zijn de beelden veel te donker, wazig en uitgewassen, zelfs in de zon, waardoor de webcam alleen bruikbaar is in noodgevallen. Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde snelle responstijden in onze tests en zou geschikt moeten zijn voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 11 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (23.8 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 636 (maximum) ms. » 15 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (37.7 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 17047 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Er gaat een beetje helderheid verloren bij het kijken vanuit extreme hoeken, maar het verlies is zeer beperkt, zoals typisch is voor IPS

Prestaties - Ongebreidelde RTX 3080

De NEO 17 is duidelijk een gamer, niet alleen vanwege de Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 laptop GPU of de 8-core Intel Core i7-11800H CPU. De RGB verlichting van het toetsenbord geeft ook wat hints. Met deze hardware combinatie zouden zelfs de nieuwste en meest veeleisende games vloeiend speelbaar moeten zijn in de native resolutie, en er zijn genoeg reserves voor 4K gaming op externe monitoren.

Voor de beste resultaten in de benchmarks deactiveren we de interne GPU in het Control Center en activeren we de Overboost modus

De 8 cores van de Intel Core i7-11800H klokken tussen 2,3 en 4,6 GHz

De NEO 17 presteert iets onder het gemiddelde in de Cinebench R15 continue loop ondanks de overboost modus, maar het verschil is slechts klein. De Aorus met dezelfde CPU is bijvoorbeeld een tikkeltje sneller. Het TDP is altijd 75 W in de individuele runs. Je kunt de TDP echter handmatig verhogen in het Control Center, maar wij laten het bij de standaardinstellingen van de overboost modus

Het resultaat is een trieste 59 dropped frames evenals een vrij hoge vertraging in real-time rendering, wat de Schenker de slechtste cijfers geeft in vergelijking. Verschillende drivers zijn hier debet aan; Schenker zou dit moeten verbeteren met een BIOS update

Grafische kaart

In de Neo werkt de geïntegreerde Intel Xe graphics als eerste, terwijl de sterkeNvidia GeForce RTX 3080 laptop GPU wacht op veeleisende taken. Je kunt Nvidia Optimus en dus de geïntegreerde GPU uitschakelen in het Control Center, wat kan resulteren in een paar fps meer dankzij de directe verbinding zonder signaalomleiding naar de iGPU. Lovenswaardig: Schenker geeft de door Nvidia vrijgegeven TGP-keuze van de GPU door aan de klant. Dit betekent dat gebruikers de maximale TGP van 165 W (inclusief 15 W Turbo Boost) kunnen toewijzen aan hun NEO in het Control Center.

Onze NEO neemt ook de leiding in 3DMark 11, bijvoorbeeld, evenals in 3DMark's Fire Strike test. De laptop presteert echter iets onder het gemiddelde in Time Spy en Cloud Gate. Over het algemeen kunnen we zien dat de prestaties van de RTX 3080 erg hoog zijn

Gaming prestaties

In de verschillende gaming benchmarks staat de NEO bijna consequent bovenaan dankzij zijn sterke GPU, waarbij de RTX 3080 ongeveer 10% beter presteert dan alle modellen die we hebben getest. De Zephyrus is zijn sterkste concurrent en komt vaak heel dicht in de buurt van de NEO, hoewel de RTX 3080 in de Zephyrus slechts een TGP van 140W heeft. Dus hoewel de NEO vaak aan de top staat, zouden de prestaties nog wel wat beter kunnen.
