Gigabyte presenteert met de Aorus 17G YD een up-to-date gaming laptop in het 17,3 inch formaat. Dit is het identieke broertje of zusje van deAorus 17G XBdie we al eerder hebben gereviewd. Tot de concurrenten behoren apparaten als de Asus Strix Scar 17 G733QSA, deLenovo Legion 7 16ACHg6, deSchenker XMG Neo 17 (Early 2021), deAlienware m17 R4, en de MSI GE76 Raider 10UH.

Vergeleken met de Aorus 17G XB heeft de 17G YD enkele upgrades gekregen op het gebied van poorten. Uit de doos toont het scherm een goede kleurweergave en voldoet het aan de doelstelling met een kleurafwijking van 2,79 (DeltaE minder dan 3). Bovendien heeft het geen last van een blauwe tint. Met kalibratie kunnen verbeteringen worden bereikt. De kleurafwijking daalt tot 1,08, en grijstinten worden evenwichtiger weergegeven. De sRGB-kleurruimte wordt voor 100% gedekt, terwijl de AdobeRGB-kleurruimte voor 74% wordt gedekt

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 14825 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

Testomstandigheden

Het voorgeïnstalleerde Aorus Control Center biedt de mogelijkheid om onder andere een energieprofiel op te geven. Wij hebben hier de automatische AI-functie gebruikt. Het resultaat is dat het Control Center zelf de juiste instellingen kiest. Dit omvat niet alleen de rekenkracht en overklokken van de CPU en GPU, maar ook de helderheid van het scherm, de kleurtemperatuur en de achtergrondverlichting van het toetsenbord.

Sommige benchmarks zijn ook uitgevoerd met het "Turbo Mode" profiel ingeschakeld. Deze laatste stelt de CPU en GPU in staat om permanent op maximale prestaties te draaien. Vergeleken met de automatische profiel selectie, zijn de verschillen klein. Dit profiel wordt niet aanbevolen voor langdurig gebruik, omdat het de ventilatoren op volle kracht laat draaien.

Processor

DeCore-i7-11800Hocta-core processor (Tiger Lake) draait op een basis kloksnelheid van 2,3 GHz. Een verhoging naar 4,2 GHz (acht kernen) of 4,6 GHz (één kern) is mogelijk via Turbo. Hyper-Threading (twee threads per core) wordt ondersteund.

De CPU-tests van de Cinebench R15-benchmark worden uitgevoerd op respectievelijk 4,2 GHz (multithread) en 4,2 tot 4,5 GHz (single-thread). Op batterijvoeding draait de CPU op 1,6 tot 4,3 GHz (multithread) en 3,2 tot 4,5 GHz (single-thread).

We controleren of de CPU Turbo ook consequent wordt gebruikt wanneer hij is aangesloten door de multithread test van de Cinebench R15 benchmark gedurende ten minste 30 minuten in een ononderbroken lus uit te voeren. Turbo werkt bijna op vol vermogen.

Het systeem draait goed en soepel. We hebben geen problemen ondervonden, afgezien van de hoge DPC latencies. De hardware biedt meer dan genoeg rekenkracht voor prestatie-intensieve toepassingen zoals gaming. Dit gaat gepaard met goede PCMark resultaten

Grafische kaart

De werkelijke prestaties van een RTX 3000 grafische kern zijn afhankelijk van de maximale TGP die de laptopfabrikant heeft gekozen binnen de door Nvidia gedefinieerde grenzen. Met een TGP van 105 watt (90 watt + 15 watt Dynamic Boost), blijft Gigabyte kiezen voor de lagere range van mogelijkheden in het geval van de GeForce RTX 3080 laptopGPU die hier is geïnstalleerd (overzicht van alle RTX 3080 laptops inclusief hun TGP's).

De 3DMark resultaten liggen ergens tussen gemiddeld en onder het gemiddelde in vergelijking met de RTX 3080 laptops die we tot nu toe hebben getest. Vanwege de lage TGP, moet de 17G zijn nederlaag toegeven aan deMSI GP76 Leopard 10UGdie is uitgerust met de nominaal zwakkere GeForce RTX 3070 laptopGPU. De technische beperkingen van de RTX 3070 ten opzichte van de RTX 3080 worden meer dan goedgemaakt door de hogere TGP (140 watt).

De RTX 3080 heeft toegang tot snel GDDR6 grafisch geheugen (16 GB). De UHD Graphics Xe 750GPU die is geïntegreerd in de processor is actief, en de laptop werkt met Nvidia's Optimus graphics-switching oplossing.

Gaming prestaties

De geïnstalleerde hardware brengt alle nieuwste games vloeiend op het scherm. De Full HD-resolutie en het maximale kwaliteitsniveau kunnen meestal worden geselecteerd. De GPU kan ook resoluties aan die verder gaan dan Full HD (hiervoor zou een geschikte monitor moeten worden aangesloten) - in sommige gevallen op lagere kwaliteitsinstellingen.

Vergeleken met de tot nu toe geteste RTX 3080 laptops presteert de 17G behoorlijk en levert gemiddelde tot iets ondergemiddelde framerates.
