Samsung zet met de Galaxy Z Flip 7 zijn beste vouwbare klaptelefoon tot nu toe neer. Dat komt vooral door de verbeterde schermen. Het grotere cover screen is fijner in gebruik en het grotere display aan de binnenkant is ook een verbetering. Tel daar de snelle hardware, fijne software en het uitstekende updatebeleid bij op en je hebt een erg goede vouwtelefoon. Toch kleven er nog wel wat nadelen aan de Flip 7. Zo is de accuduur middelmatig, duurt het opladen lang en zijn de camera’s niet van topkwaliteit. Door de hoge prijs is de Z Flip 7 niet voor iedereen weggelegd, maar de smartphone is aantrekkelijker dan ooit. Zeker als je nog even wacht tot de prijs is gedaald.

Galaxy Z Flip 7 is enerzijds een toestel dat je trots in je zak doet (en daar past hij dankzij zijn kleine formaatje ook heel comfortabel in). Een uitgesproken vorm en kleur: dit is echt heel wat anders als je een gewone smartphone gewend bent. Supertof. De processor doet zijn werk goed, de software doet het prima en die vouw wordt ook steeds minder zichtbaar. Anderzijds zijn er facetten aan deze smartphone die voor mij op dit moment nog dealbrekers zijn. Ik zou heel graag voor een flipphone kiezen, maar juist fotografie en de accuduur zijn voor mij belangrijk en op dat gebied laat deze smartphone te wensen over. Gezien het prijskaartje, maar ook kijkend naar de verschillen met de voorganger, zet ik daarom -met een beetje pijn in mijn hart, want het is een tof apparaat om te zien- mijn vraagtekens bij de relevantie van deze klaptelefoon.

Altogether, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is a solid smartphone, and while some aspects of it aren’t up to par with the Razr Ultra, Samsung’s flip phone is more afforable. The Z Flip 7 costs $1,642.99, while the Razr Ultra is priced at $1,899.99. Both phones are considerably too expensive in my opinion, but at least if you want a solid foldable, and the Razr Ultra is out of your price range, Samsung’s handset might be for you. I would recommend this handset to someone who wants to try this sort of foldable phone, doesn’t mind that they’re not getting top quality pictures and isn’t a mobile gamer. However, with a longer battery life, and the great 4.1-inch Cover Screen, the Z Flip 7 isn’t a bad option, but I wouldn’t consider it the best flip style foldable on the market anymore, as that crown can easily go to the Razr Ultra this year.

I started this review by saying I’m not sold on flip phones. The constant need to fold the phone open to do normal phone stuff is a big reason why. It starts to feel cumbersome very quickly. I’m pulling my phone out of my pocket many times throughout the day, and that’s an extra step between me and my task. Motorola makes this experience a bit better by offering nearly the full phone experience on the external display. I simply don’t have to fold a Razr phone open as often as a Z Flip. Samsung greatly improved the Cover Screen hardware, but the software still limits it. So, I’m left with a big, beautiful edge-to-edge screen that can’t really do what I want it to do. Samsung absolutely nailed the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s hardware and design, but for my money, I’d rather have a more powerful external display.

The Flip 7 is the only foldable flip phone in the US with seven years of Android updates, and Samsung’s after-sales support for any repairs you may need is leagues ahead of what Motorola offers. Pair that with the FlexWindow’s highly customisable menus, widgets, and apps, and two cameras that take up minimal space, and you have one of the best clamshell secondary screens money can buy. It also resolved its previous battery uptime issues by switching to its in-house Exynos chipset.

Like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 we reviewed, it has a smaller hinge, smaller bezels and an improved display aspect ratio (inner display). The outer display gets significantly larger at 4.1” with no more cutout for the cameras and it’s actually pleasant to use. Battery life is improved, Samsung’s Exynos 2500 CPU is an excellent choice to help with that while being faster than last year’s Snapdragon. The price starts at $1,100 and as ever, Samsung has strong trade-in values in the US.

It’s an interesting shift for Motorola to be the brand further ahead in the performance stakes, an area in which Samsung usually reigns supreme. I don’t, however, think it changes the dynamic much. The Razr 60 Ultra was already the better choice for anyone who wants greater customisation for their cover screen – a far more pressing concern than Geekbench results, in my opinion. If you don’t care that much about using the cover screen beyond widgets (or are happy to side-load them via a third-party app), there’s a fairly strong argument for choosing the Z Flip 7 this year. The design is impressively slim and sturdy, battery life is very good, and the extensive software support remains unmatched. If the cover screen were less restrictive, it would be a slam-dunk for Samsung. As things stand, however, I’m still recommending the Razr 60 Ultra over the Galaxy Z Flip 7, because Motorola makes far more of the foldable format.

I’m especially glad it’s a much lighter, more compact device for me to carry around. Thanks to big upgrades like its larger Flex Window display, multimodal AI capabilities, and Samsung DeX, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 has all the ingredients in what I want in a phone — and it helps that it doesn’t cost a fortune either. Over on the creative side of things, no other phone matches the utility of the Flip for what I want in a camera phone. Although the camera performance is barely improved from the Z Flip 6, its rich camera app and handy Flex Window display make it more powerful to use. Motorola has dominated the flip phone scene for the last couple of years now, and while the Razr Ultra (2025) is a super upgrade, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 convinces me that Samsung is back on top.

The fact that we've also gotten higher battery capacity and a meaningful improvement in endurance is also not to be overlooked. Some of the Z Flip7's pros are as true now as they were true of the previous generation. One UI is about as feature-packed as there is and remains a key Galaxy selling point in every comparison despite, in this particular case, Samsung's continued refusal to unlock the full potential of the cover screen. The camera system may not exactly be top-cameraphone-grade, but it's pretty great for a clamshell.

Let’s not forget that One UI is an amazing skin that brings forth many more useful features. The gaming performance is a bit weird now due to aggressive shader caching, and there are zero optimizations from any game developers at the time of this recording. But then again, if you’re a mobile gamer, flip phones are not for you anyway.

Summarizing the downsides, there are two things that stand out. One is how Samsung treats the cover screen as some sort of a widget center rather than allowing users to fully customize it, and the other is the Exynos 2500 chipset, which is not flagship-grade. But those are not dealbreakers and with its long software support and many other little improvements, the Flip 7 regains the crown as the go-to Flip phone for buyers.

In the end, while not absolutely perfect, the Z Flip 7 represents a major step forward for Samsung’s pocket-sized foldable series. The compromises are smaller, to the point where they’re easy to ignore. It’s a great all-rounder, has a much better cover screen, better camera performance and an internal screen that’s not too narrow. I really like it. You could argue that Motorola’s Razr 60 Ultra makes better use of the cover screen – and I’d agree with that assessment – but with the build quality, display quality, software optimisations and improved cameras, the Z Flip 7 is much closer to competing with Motorola’s super clamshell. And in some ways, it’s actually better. This is a wonderful phone, and one that’s a joy to use.

Neither are especially important to me, and I’ve been able to enjoy the wonderful convenience of the folding design with few concerns, provided I remember to charge it every night. I’d consider an upgrade if I owned a Galaxy Z Flip 5, but not if I owned a Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Overall, I've enjoyed my time with this flexible Galaxy smartphone. Sure, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 still won't suit power users who are constantly snapping or streaming. But I find I can do everything I need to with around 5-6 hours of screen on time per day. That includes camera capture and video chats, mixing it up between the cover and main screens. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 can cope with gaming on the go. BUT, Wuthering Waves runs best with lower graphics settings and this foldable phone does get quite toasty under pressure. Sadly the camera setup hasn't been upgraded at all vs the Z Flip 6. But all the same, this Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 can capture some decent looking pics and home movies, and is especially good for selfie fans. Just expect the usual Sammy processing shenanigans.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is Samsung’s clearest attempt yet to bring foldables to a wider audience, delivering the signature Flip experience at a more approachable $899 price point. You still get the same main and ultrawide cameras, a high-quality folding display, full Galaxy AI support, and that iconic compact design. But for $200 more, the regular Z Flip 7 offers meaningful upgrades: a faster processor, extra RAM, Samsung DeX support, a larger and more capable cover screen, and likely better battery life. For first-time foldable users, the Z Flip 7 FE is an appealing gateway. That said, the Motorola Razr (2025) undercuts it at $699 while delivering a similarly solid clamshell experience — and arguably a more flexible cover screen. Still, if you want to stay in Samsung’s ecosystem, the Z Flip 7 FE brings much of what makes the full Flip great, at a lower price. Unless you really need the larger cover display or power-user extras, the FE model could be the smarter buy.

I expect something similar this time, but the Exynos chipset’s image processor might change things. I look forward to testing out this device’s cameras, but I’m hoping it’s the same as last year or better, and hopefully not worse. I really liked this year’s Razr Ultra, but Motorola increased the price of its handset to $1,899, which is a little much. Compared to $1,462, Samsung’s handset seems like a better option. Of course, the Razr Ultra has a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, a 4,700mAh battery, a 50-megapixel triple camera setup, 16GB of RAM and more, which makes it more ‘Ultra’ than the Z Flip 7. It’s impressive that Samsung is not raising the price of the Z Flip 7 in Canada, but also providing a better experience. While the phone itself isn’t all that exciting, especially compared to the Razr Ultra, the Z Flip 7 might be foldable if you want a solid experience but don’t want to pay $1,900. Of course, I’ll need to put this through its paces before making any concrete judgments.

Between the 9th and 24th of July, however, you can get the 512GB model for the same price as the 256GB, essentially getting double the storage for no extra cost. And should you buy the Z Flip 7? Well, I’ll be more sure after the full reviews but, based on this initial hands-on time, I’m more impressed than I expected to be. The new cover display is doing a lot of heavy lifting there, but I also like the sound of some of the software features. And, of course, the biggest perk of choosing the Z Flip 7 is the extensive software support.

Though not quite as revolutionary an upgrade as the Z Fold 7, I think the Galaxy Z Flip 7 has enough to shout about. The larger cover screen, in particular, should make a huge difference to the Flip experience, allowing it to better compete with alternatives from Motorola and Xiaomi while adding a distinctly premium look to the foldable, which, dare I say, was missing before. The lack of any camera hardware changes is a little disappointing to see, but the added camera features – from new filters to a new auto shooting mode – arguably cater more to the Flip user’s needs than a high-res zoom lens. This is a phone designed for selfie takers, after all, and I wager that the 50MP main camera will do just as good a job as ever at that. Some might bemoan the use of the Exynos chipset, but I’d argue that flip-style foldables can rarely handle the thermals that come with top-end performance anyway, so for a less power-hungry user, it’s more than enough.

Having created the current foldables market, Samsung has spent the last few iterations playing catchup as Chinese manufacturers started to out-design the Korean giant with slimmer models and even a tri-folding screen. But with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, Samsung is finally ready to show who's the king. The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a stunner. At 8.9mm thick, it's on par with the the Oppo Find N5, and just slightly thicker than the just-announced Honor Magic V5 (8.88mm thick). Honestly, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is approaching the limits of how thin it can be, due to how phones have to accommodate the USB-C port. Of course, they can always skip the port entirely, and just go with wireless charging, but that's an altogether different story for another time.

Samsung Xclipse 950: Grafische chip voor smartphones en tablets, geïntegreerd in de Samsung Exynos 2500 SoC. Gebaseerd op de AMD RDNA-architectuur, inclusief raytracing-ondersteuning.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.
